As an LMSW I have experience in treating substance use disorders, relapse prevention, crisis, depression, anxiety, eating disorders, PTSD, trauma, mood disorders, personality disorders, and more.
It can be scary and intimidating when entering therapy. It is quite common that people can feel very vulnerable with the idea of sharing intimate details of their life. As a therapist, I believe it is a privilege to be invited into another person’s life. My philosophy is that I do not believe that people are broken, but rather each person is a unique individual who has, at some point, encountered struggles on the journey of being human. Therapy is often needed when those struggles become so intense that they impact the quality of life. Therapy is not about fixing people but rather learning, adapting and overcoming the challenges.

I believe that therapy is a mutual relationship, a partnership involving mutual respect and empathetic understanding. Counseling should be more than just a method of solving a problem or achieving a goal - it should provide a way of opening us up to an awareness of ourselves - facilitating personal growth and development of character. I will not presume to know all of the answers and I don't believe in quick fixes. I promise to work with you side-by-side as you gain new insight and understanding in overcoming past and present events; obtaining knowledge and resources that will equip you in moving forward. We are in this together.

One of my guiding beliefs as a therapist is that you already possess the strength, ability and innate qualities needed to grow and change, we just have to work together to identify and remove the obstacles standing in your way from becoming your best self. My goal is to help you discover realistic solutions to problematic patterns of thinking and behaving that are keeping you from feeling your best, and learn coping skills that produce lasting change in order to live a more fulfilling life.

There is no one more put together than a person in recovery. Living in recovery is working a program of mental health, staying clean and sober, and living one day at a time. With that being said, each person’s specific program looks different, with the common factor of living a balanced life of being grateful, mindful, spiritual, and finding a sense of community among other recovering individuals. My specialty areas are addictions, mental health, trauma, codependency issues, and how these affect you and those who love you.

My vision began several years ago when I realized that most counseling agencies tend to concentrate on only one aspect of wellbeing, "Mental Health". Many people seeking whole body wellness are forced to travel to multiple providers to gain the full experience. Why not have one agency that meets the multiple aspect in achieving the "Whole Body Wellness" concept? I truly believe that maximizing personal wellbeing is dependent on the emotional, physical and spiritual health of every individual. I am proud to provide the surrounding community with a comprehensive clinic that addresses whole body wellness.

At North Star, we believe that it is possible to find peace and be content even in difficult times. When we hold pain gently and allow ourselves to be vulnerable, our problems can pass with more ease and we can grow more authentically - we become wiser and more connected to ourselves and others. Strength isn't the absence of vulnerability or fear. Happiness isn't the absence of sadness. Safety isn't the absence of threat. Our peace can come from knowing how to be vulnerable, how to express sadness, how to navigate threat.

Eating Disorders Therapists

What happens in therapy for eating disorders?

In therapy for eating disorders, patients typically describe their eating and exercise behaviors, their patterns of eating in relation to stress, their beliefs about their body, the ways their eating behavior affects their relationships, and their desire (or lack of it) to change. Such information helps the therapist understand the origins of the disorder and the role it plays in the patient’s life, important for guiding treatment. Attitudes and feelings about food and eating, body weight, and physical appearance are common topics of discussion throughout treatment.

What therapy types help with eating disorders?

Once any acute medical or psychiatric emergency is resolved, psychoactive medication is often prescribed, requiring the supervision of a psychiatrist. In addition, patients receive some form of nutritional counseling along with one or more forms of psychotherapy. For adolescents, family-based treatment is empirically validated and considered the first line of treatment; parents and their children meet weekly with a clinician as the adults are coached on how to nourish and psychologically support the young patient. Adults typically receive some form of individual psychotherapy, intended to resolve the cognitive and behavioral disturbances that underlie the disorder and to relieve the mood disturbances that accompany it. In addition, patients may also be helped by group therapy.

What is the goal of therapy for eating disorders?

The most immediate goal of treatment for eating disorders is to save the life of people who are on a path of starving themselves to death or engaging in eating patterns that are doing irreparable physical harm to their body. Once the acute medical danger is past, therapy is required to understand the nature of the disordered eating and/or exercise patterns, establish healthy eating behavior, and to tackle the many erroneous beliefs and distorted self-perceptions that underlie eating disorders and continue to pose a threat to health and life. Therapy also addresses the impaired mood that not only accompanies eating disorders but intensifies the danger to health and life.

What are the limitations of therapy for eating disorders?

Therapy can be very helpful for eating disorders—but that can happen only after people recognize they have a condition that must be treated. Especially with anorexia, the distortions in self-image that accompany the disorder can keep people from acknowledging they have a problem. Individuals may in fact see their eating disorder as a badge of self-control. Those with binge-eating disorder may feel too ashamed to seek help. Therapy cannot help those who do not avail themselves of it.

How long does therapy last for eating disorders?

Because of their complexity, recovery from eating disorders is usually a long-term process—measured in months and years— often marked by setbacks and relapse. Some form of help, such as individual or group therapy, may be advisable for much of that time. It is a general rule of thumb that the longer the illness has endured and the dysregulated eating behavior has taken root, the longer treatment is likely to be needed.
