Most of my clients are wrestling with some combination of anxiety, depression, and relationship problems. In addition, they are often struggling to figure out what in life is most meaningful and important for them. With other clients, their life goals and values may be clear, but they find themselves running into psychological barriers such as fear and avoidance. In an ideal world I would want all my clients to be able to say that they have never felt more understood and, simultaneously, that they have never felt more challenged -- always in a safe and respectful environment.
The focus of therapy will, ultimately, be on your behaviors. Specifically, the type of behaviors that are in the service of your goals and values, such as greater intimacy. However, much of our actual work will be on thoughts and, especially, emotions as these are often the greatest barriers to values-oriented behavior change.
My approach to your thoughts and feelings is informed by a mindfulness and acceptance-based approach. In other words, we won't be specifically trying to change how you think and feel but, rather, creating greater willingness so that you no longer need to avoid situations (such as greater intimacy) that might trigger them.
