I frequently draw from therapies such as EMDR, mindfulness based stress reduction, CBT, DBT and acceptance and commitment therapy (act).
Do you find yourself feeling anxious, low energy, overwhelmed, or angry? Do you feel disconnected in your relationships? Would you like someone to explore your feelings, values, and experiences with? Do you feel your relationship may be abusive, or are you still struggling from a past abusive relationship? I have experience treating anxiety, relationship issues, domestic violence, trauma, depression, substance abuse and chronic pain, I can help you explore how alcohol and drug use affect your emotional health, and support you in reaching a more balanced place in your life.

In my work, I apply Gestalt, somatic, Dialectical Behavioral (DBT), and Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) methods.
I specialize in working with individuals and couples whose challenges with interpersonal relationships are due to anxiety, depression, and/or past traumatic events. My clients with the best outcomes are willing to engage in deep dialogues, complete "homework" between sessions, and are comfortable with a "hands-on approach” in therapy. I am a good fit for people struggling with social anxiety, depression, religious trauma, life transitions, procrastination, or relationship issues. I enjoy working with LGBTQIA + community and can help people questioning gender identity and heteronormativity.

I bring a lot of trauma therapy interventions into my work, and use EMDR, DBT, mindfulness, attachment, parts work, Safe and Sound Protocol, and somatic interventions.
Hi! My case load is full but check out my website to match with one of my associates who would love to work with you! I am an LCSW in Oregon and Washington. I work with teens and adults particularly around trauma and more severe symptoms of anxiety and depression. I also work with those with chronic illness, body image issues, gender questions, and neurodivergence. I have a particular affinity for people who have endured trauma and who feel like they are outsiders. I pride myself in being culturally sensitive and welcoming to all, and someone who works as part of the LGBTQIA+ community. I'm an approved clinical supervisor in Oregon.

My theoretical orientation is rooted in Systems Theory and I utilize interventions from Family Systems Therapy, Internal Family Systems, CBT, DBT, Motivational Interviewing, ARC, as well as Somatic and Mindfulness based psychotherapies.
I believe the role of a therapist is to be more than a reflective and empathetic companion in the client’s journey and must also incorporate directive approaches in order to alternate between being a companion and being a leader on that journey. Inherent in this belief is that clients are coming to therapy because they want something different than what they currently have. This can be as simple as a new perspective on a past or current struggle or as complex as a new skill set for managing and overcoming emotional, behavioral, cognitive, relational, or somatic patterns that have arisen in response to emotional distress.

If desired, I have advanced training in DBT to help clients develop the skills they need.
The greatest joy comes when clients break free of painful patterns and move to feeling comfortable with life. I've been a counselor for 25 years, with extensive experience helping those struggling with depression, anxiety, trauma, and addictions. Getting at underlying issues of shame, loss of control and grief changes lives. When therapy works there's more than just insight; clients feel it in their heart as well as their head. Those around them see that they have a life worth living with more happiness and better handling of the inevitable potholes.

I can do this by incorporating an eclectic approach to therapy which includes techniques derived from Cognitive and Dialectical Behavioral Therapies, Reality-Based Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, Emotion Focused, and Solution Focused modalities.
Beginning your journey in therapy can be difficult and overwhelming…perhaps even a little scary. It takes a lot of courage to be vulnerable and explore some of the most difficult aspects of your life. That’s why it is so important to find someone who you can trust. I believe life is not just made up of one- but many journeys and the experiences along the way. I enjoy working with individuals who have a multitude of different experiences, cultures, and backgrounds. These experiences help me to incorporate the most important aspects of your identity to ensure your treatment is in alignment with your core beliefs and values.

I integrate techniques from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Compassion-focused therapy (CFT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), narrative therapy and somatic experiencing.
Together we can co-create a safe space of curiosity and self-compassion. Here, we find opportunities to identify and understand the origins of and what triggers the patterns, beliefs, thoughts, and behaviors that don’t serve you. I am inspired by our inherent connectedness and its profound power to make individual, familial, communal, societal, and earthly changes towards a world with a lot more love and belonging. I am honored to hold this collaborative space for adults of all ethnicities/races, genders, sexual orientations, shapes and sizes, abilities, nationalities, and occupations.

Additionally, I use techniques from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), and Gestalt therapy.
Seeking therapy can be an unnerving task. It can be scary to open up to a stranger about personal thoughts, feelings and experiences. My goal as a therapist is to create a welcoming and safe environment for clients to be able to fully experience themselves and reflect on their lives. I encourage clients to embrace their truths and build up their confidence over the course of treatment by both validating and providing areas to look deeper in sessions.

I practice an eclectic style incorporating CBT, DBT, and person-first therapies, focused on what you want to accomplish, on your terms.
Hi, I am glad you are here. I’m Mike Schwarting, Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in Oregon. I am accepting new clients in Oregon! I believe that therapy is a process of making connections between people. In a chaotic and unsettled world, having a real connection with a knowledgeable, kind, and above all, supportive therapist can mean the difference between despair and living the life you deserve. I work primarily with adults, and have extensive experience with men’s issues, the LGBTQIA+ community, and relationship therapy. I practice according to WPATH and APA standards of care.

Dialectical Behavior (DBT) Therapists

Who is DBT for?

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is designed for people who experience extreme emotional suffering because they lack the skills of emotion regulation and distress tolerance. The basic affliction can underlie a wide range of conditions, from borderline and other personality disorders to PTSD and treatment-resistant anxiety and depression. The therapy is helpful to those whose emotional reactivity is so intense it is disruptive to everyday functioning and leads to frequent crises.

Why do people need DBT?

The ability to regulate emotions is a core psychological skill that enables people to function in life and pay attention to the world outside themselves; it is consistently associated with well-being. DBT is designed to help people learn how to manage and regulate their emotions. Originally developed to treat people with borderline personality disorder whose extreme emotional suffering led to self-harming behavior and suicide attempts, the therapy is now applied to other conditions involving emotion dysregulation, particularly when other treatments have failed.

What happens in DBT?

Individuals meet weekly with their therapist to discuss their experiences relating to moods, behavior, and skills. Using checklists they maintain, they review emotional experiences and positive practices they engage in. The diaries help individuals discern what led up to a specific problem encountered, this is followed by discussion of the consequences of their actions. In addition, individuals may meet in class-like small groups to learn skills such as mindfulness, emotion regulation and distress tolerance.

How long does DBT last?

Because it is intended to establish long-lasting behavioral change among those with persistent problems, DBT is designed to last six months to a year. DBT includes both weekly sessions of individual therapy and weekly skills-training sessions conducted in small groups. Studies of DBT have documented improvement within a year of treatment, particularly in controlling self-harmful behavior; nevertheless, individuals may require therapy for several years.
