We'll use DBT coping skills to ease current pain points and work on recognizing longer-standing problems that may be hindering your current happiness and functioning.
I help teens and young adults express themselves so they can feel seen and understood. My clients struggle like you do. Despite being smart, artsy, and a skilled techy, life is hard. When my clients first come in, they often start off a bit on the quiet side. Maybe it's because they're the introverted type or maybe it's just that we're in the "getting to know each other" phase. Heck, it could even be that putting their struggles into words is like trying to watch YouTube when your parents turn off the WiFi. They feel trapped on a rollercoaster with all the ups and downs so fast they can't get their balance.

My approach combines cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavioral therapy, trauma focused-CBT, and person centered therapy, to name a few.
I am licensed in the state of Georgia and have worked in the mental health field for 20 years. Seven of those years I have worked as a therapist/counselor. Some of my experience includes working in a residential treatment center, in an outpatient community mental health clinic, private practice, as well as in school settings. I have worked with those from all different ethnic backgrounds with great outcomes. I enjoy helping adolescents and adults live happier, healthier lives, by improving their mental health and education. Based on the initial session, treatment will be tailored to the needs of each individual.

Sarah utilizes interventions from evidence based approaches such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and DBT to work with her clients towards their individual goals.
Sarah believes that each client is the author of his or her own life experiences, and has the capability of maneuvering and pushing forward through circumstances in life. She recognizes it can be difficult and scary learning and implementing the tools needed to accomplish fears and worries. "It's like exercising a new muscle. It may hurt and get sore by working-out, but the muscle grows stronger the more effort you put into working on it." She has extensively researched the concept of empathy to help clients work through their trauma to develop secure attachment styles as well as understanding perspectives and co-dependency actions.

I often use other modalities such as DBT, IFS, and mindfulness.
I believe life is about balance. Balancing our relationships, health, work, and hobbies. But sometimes, life can throw us off due to our experiences, relationships, and emotions. Together, we will take a holistic view of your life, what's working well, and where you might need support to help you regain equilibrium. Honoring yourself, your past experiences, and your needs can lead to the healing and growth you are looking for.

I help nerdy cool awkward teens and young adults navigate through a world that doesn't seem to fit. My clients struggle like you do. Despite being smart, funny, and knowing the ins and outs of their favorite games, life is hard. When they first come in, they tell me that they don't need therapy. They explain that other people don't get them, blame them, and expect them to be something they're not. They can't figure out where life went from sometimes fun/sometimes boring to unmanageable and overwhelming. They talk about their family not caring and not really having friends. They struggle to communicate with pretty much everyone.

I help highly intelligent over-achievers trade anxiety for confidence without feeling like a failure. My clients struggle like you do. Despite being smart, successful, and funnier than a viral meme, life is hard. When they first come in, they feel trapped by their image. They like being thought of as organized and successful, but inside they feel a total fake. When they stop to think about it, they realize they don't even feel like themselves anymore... it's like they've morphed into what other people expect them to be. Their greatest fear is people seeing the real person behind their mask and rejecting them.

Dialectical Behavior (DBT) Therapists

Who is DBT for?

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is designed for people who experience extreme emotional suffering because they lack the skills of emotion regulation and distress tolerance. The basic affliction can underlie a wide range of conditions, from borderline and other personality disorders to PTSD and treatment-resistant anxiety and depression. The therapy is helpful to those whose emotional reactivity is so intense it is disruptive to everyday functioning and leads to frequent crises.

Why do people need DBT?

The ability to regulate emotions is a core psychological skill that enables people to function in life and pay attention to the world outside themselves; it is consistently associated with well-being. DBT is designed to help people learn how to manage and regulate their emotions. Originally developed to treat people with borderline personality disorder whose extreme emotional suffering led to self-harming behavior and suicide attempts, the therapy is now applied to other conditions involving emotion dysregulation, particularly when other treatments have failed.

What happens in DBT?

Individuals meet weekly with their therapist to discuss their experiences relating to moods, behavior, and skills. Using checklists they maintain, they review emotional experiences and positive practices they engage in. The diaries help individuals discern what led up to a specific problem encountered, this is followed by discussion of the consequences of their actions. In addition, individuals may meet in class-like small groups to learn skills such as mindfulness, emotion regulation and distress tolerance.

How long does DBT last?

Because it is intended to establish long-lasting behavioral change among those with persistent problems, DBT is designed to last six months to a year. DBT includes both weekly sessions of individual therapy and weekly skills-training sessions conducted in small groups. Studies of DBT have documented improvement within a year of treatment, particularly in controlling self-harmful behavior; nevertheless, individuals may require therapy for several years.
