Sometimes, old stories are built into our current awareness that no longer serve our needs. Grief, complex trauma, and unresolved issues become stuck in our thoughts and behaviors. Our energy becomes encased in worry or fears. Psychotherapy can reduce suffering, release tension, and build insight to the patterns that no longer serve us. Through compassion, acceptance, and nonjudgmental feedback, healing begins to shape a new story - the story of the life that we desire. Emotional safety is a priority at Korb Counseling as we work with your goals toward healing. Group counseling and meditation classes are also offered.

No one teaches us how to handle the setbacks of life. Whether they be personal, family, career, or interpersonal. Sometimes problems can feel like a tremendous burden. In fact, obstacles are often pathways to reach a higher understanding of ourselves and how we fit into the larger scheme of things. Freedom from fear, worry, anxiety, depression, and sleepless nights arrives with the acceptance of non-perfection. We are all human and fallible, born to make mistakes. In a world of judgements and comparisons we need to treat ourselves and others with respect and compassion. "Be yourself..everyone else is taken".

What I think is important for you to know about my approach is that I genuinely care for you; and have a desire to see you thrive. I am invested in understanding you; in helping you to see your authentic self; and to love that self without ceasing. Growth is a hard process; it’s a scary process, but it is valuable. I want to help you experience a life inspired by possibility. So often, we choose based on fear and expectation; not even knowing that is our pattern.

For me, therapy is about transformation--dealing with old feelings, memories, regrets that are now getting in the way of living and functioning. Transformation may also be about moving into or out of relationships, jobs, locations, lifestyle, or an era of one's life. I like to help people deal with who they are, with the meaning of their life, and the importance of their feelings, relationships, and vocation. I want to hear your story, understand your pain, and work with you to discover your healing resources within, and find hope for living more deeply.

People with chronic pain, anger, anxiety, internal conflicts, distractability, depression seem to heal faster through these approaches using more of their own ability to heal wounds.
In therapy you are my co-worker where you bring what you know about living your life. We bring your family members to help support your therapy when we see that as helpful to you. We also set up support for you through your community of human and non-human life.

Chronic Pain Therapists

How does chronic pain therapy work?

Engaging with a psychotherapist to help treat chronic pain does not mean that one’s pain is all in their head. Therapy for chronic-pain patients has been shown to benefit both the mind and the body, targeting physical symptoms and increasing daily functioning. In other words, for many, addressing their emotional health through therapy affects their physical health. A therapist can help a client challenge unhelpful thoughts about pain and develop new ways to respond to it, such as distraction or calming breathing techniques. Studies have found that therapy can be as effective as surgery for certain cases of chronic pain and many doctors recommend trying psychotherapy in advance of considering invasive surgery.

What are the most effective treatment options for chronic pain?

Stress, anxiety, depression, catastrophizing, ruminating, lack of activity, and social withdrawal all make chronic pain worse. Addressing these issues, research shows, can help people gain control over their pain symptoms. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy, biofeedback, and mindfulness-based stress reduction, along with greater pain-management education, have been found to help people reduce fear and disability.

Are there new treatments for chronic pain?

Many cases of chronic pain, particularly those involving back pain, remain medically unexplained. But there is evidence that changes in the brain or nervous system are caused by previous physical ailments such as tissue damage; in such cases, the brain may continue to send out pain signals despite the physical cause having healed. To aid patients under these circumstances, a recently developed treatment known as pain reprocessing therapy (PRT) is designed to help the brain “unlearn” this response. A PRT practitioner helps individuals to reduce the “threat value” of their ongoing pain signals until they can reappraise them as less threatening and fear-inducing. They also help an individual to develop new emotional regulation skills.

How long does therapy for chronic pain take?

There is no set timeline for recovery from chronic pain, especially as there may be a range of physical and psychological causes for any individual’s discomfort, but most patients should expect to see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 sessions. Studies of pain reprocessing therapy found that many individuals’ experience of pain lessened in eight sessions over four weeks.
