While I have enjoyed working effectively with a wide variety of individuals, I specialize in LGBTQIA+ affirmative therapy, ADHD, anxiety, depression, trauma, and couples/relationship challenges.
One of the hardest parts of the therapeutic process is choosing the right therapist for you, and I hope to join you on your journey toward greater self-understanding, compassion, and insight. Many people come to therapy after experiencing emotional distress that has led them to feel overwhelmed and as though they have lost direction in, and control of, their life. In a safe and non-judgmental space, I work collaboratively with my clients to explore ways in which they can effectively regain a sense of empowerment, meaning, and control in their lives.

As a cisgender gay man with a love of pop music and professional experience advancing racial justice, protecting children’s rights, defending civil liberties, and providing therapy at an LGBTQIA+ health center in Washington, DC, I show up as my authentic self as a therapist supporting clients across the spectrum of gender and sexuality.
Therapy with me is warm and genuine. Clients and I look into self-compassion, breaking patterns, exploring identities, getting in touch with and better handling emotions, unpacking shame and self-blame, and taking charge of life. Whether you feel held back by anxiety, depression, self-doubt, trauma, societal expectations, the stressors of life, or other causes not on that list, you have the power to gain a sense of clarity about who you are, what you want, and what changes you need to get there. Therapy provides a space for that power to emerge.

I am a passionate about working with LGBTQ+ and BIPOC folx and I work towards healing the emotional experience and bodies, in all bodies, including all sizes (HAES), genders, and relationship orientations including kink, poly and ethical monogamy.
Satisfaction, joy and self-awareness are key elements to a fulfilling life. Although that seems easier said than done, I believe that we can find these elements with encouraging support and guidance. I am a committed, compassionate therapist who is ready to help you uncover your inner strengths to make the changes you want and live a more gratifying life. I believe that we all take a journey to find ourselves, but it becomes even more difficult when we are burdened by depression, addiction and/or trauma. Finding the right fit can help us get through difficult times, creating positive relationship is paramount to our happiness.

I identify as queer, Jewish, white, and male/cis-male.
Hi, I'm David. Mostly I am a couples therapist, but I also serve individuals. I practice Emotionally Focused Therapy (an evidence-based practice for couples), Internal Family Systems (IFS), and psychedelic-assisted therapies. In my career I've seen a lot and worked with many different kinds of people; hence, I'm professional and nonjudgmental. I enjoy being a social worker and therapist for all types of humans, but I specialize in serving queer and trans couples. Additionally, I am now offering ketamine-assisted psychotherapy for individuals and couples. My belief is, being a person is hard, but good relationships heal.

In my work with sexual concerns I often support persons w/ nonconforming relationship structures and welcome those who identify as kinky, queer, & trans.
Are you a child of a dysfunctional family, see yourself playing roles of a caretaker, people pleaser, fawner or avoidant of conflict? Do you wonder how these roles began? Perhaps you recognize their origin but feel uncertain how to step outside of these roles that feel inauthentic. Do you ever think to yourself, “I don’t feel like I know my ‘true self’”? You may desire to show up differently but not sure where or how to begin. I assure you; these questions and thoughts make complete sense to me, and I am here to work alongside you as we walk the path towards discovering your inner wisdom, truth and power to heal your past wounds.

I practice LGBTQIA+ affirming care, and am passionate about using an intersectional approach to explore the different ways culture, social norms, policies, history, and our various social identities (chosen, ascribed, and assumed) impact our experiences in the world and how we understand ourselves.
I work with adults who have experienced childhood trauma and abuse. It's OK if you don't resonate with that word. Maybe you've said that you had a "dysfunctional family" or a "complicated childhood." However you see it, it is what we experienced and learned in childhood that influences how we show up in relationships with others and with ourselves. My clients want to heal their inner child, want to improve their relationships, what to feel safe and secure in who they are. They want to rewrite the stories they've held on to, and unlearn the painful negative beliefs about who they are and what they deserve.

LGBTQ+ Therapists

Do LGBTQ-affirmative therapists receive special training?

Yes. Many therapists who practice LGBTQ-affirmative therapy have completed specialized training, either during their degree program or as continuing education, to learn the core principles of affirmative therapy and how to best support their LGBTQ clients; some have received certifications in LGBTQ-affirmative therapy. Prospective clients should inquire as to a clinician’s background and training to ensure a good fit.

Why might I want to see an LGBTQ-affirming or LGBTQ-friendly therapist?

Queer and gender-non-conforming individuals frequently experience bias and marginalization in day-to-day life. Working with a therapist who understands these unique challenges, as well as accepts and affirms their identity, can help LGBTQ clients feel safe and supported during therapy—allowing them to better navigate their relationships, mental health, and anything else that they wish to explore during therapy. It is important to note that many therapists can be effective in their work with LGBTQ+ individuals, even in the absence of specific training or background knowledge. The most important component in therapy is the alliance between therapist and client, and this alliance can exist between individuals with very different backgrounds.

How can I find an LGBTQ-friendly therapist?

You may wish to inquire about a therapist’s expertise with your specific challenges or concerns—depression, for example, or relationship strife—as well as their past experiences treating LGBTQ+ clients. Prospective clients may also ask whether a therapist has obtained additional training and/or certification in LGBTQ-affirmative techniques.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience with LGBTQ issues?

Prospective clients should feel empowered to directly ask therapists whether they have received training or been certified in LGBTQ-affirming therapy; competent therapists will be happy to explain their educational background and preferred approach(es) to help a client find the best match for them. Clients may also wish to ask how a therapist has treated clients with their particular challenges in the past and what they expect treatment to look like.

Are all the therapists listed in the LGBTQ directory themselves members of the LGBTQ community?

While therapists may choose to disclose their sexual orientation or gender identity in their profiles, the LGBTQ directory features not only those who have shared this information but also those who assert specialized training or experience in providing support to queer individuals, couples or families.
