The decision to see a therapist is one of the most important ones you can make, because it means you have decided to change the course of your emotional life. All humans are wired to feel emotions deeply, and sometimes we can be overwhelmed by their power. I understand how difficult it can be to live with depression or anxiety, and I want you to know that you are not alone in your struggles. These are common and treatable conditions that can significantly impact your daily life and well-being. It takes a lot of courage to seek therapy, and I am here to support you and help you find relief from your symptoms.

I am a licensed psychoanalyst with over 20 years of clinical experience and I am a certified Divorce Mediator. I received my doctorate at Columbia University and psychoanalytic training at the National Psychological Association for Psychoanalysis. I treat specific problems in the context of the whole person and believe that people have the capacity to move beyond their present limits and fears. With an eclectic background, I combine traditional with modern technique. I believe therapy must follow the client’s lead. Mutual goals need to be developed so that emotional healing and psychic growth can occur.

In my practice, I take pride in treating everyone as an individual and consider differences in their histories, personalities and the different ways they cope with their emotional distress. I consider these differences and similarities extremely carefully whenever I design a patients treatment plan. BENEFITS There are five goals that are almost always achieved when under my care. 1)Increased insight or improved understanding of one's own mental state. This can range from simply knowing one's strengths and weaknesses, to understanding their symptoms are signs of mental illness, and to deepen their awareness and acceptance of inner feelings.

For ambitious, driven individuals in their 20-30’s, life can get quite overwhelming. Juggling family responsibilities, romantic interests, and career aspirations while trying to establish a strong sense of independence is no small task. Perhaps you're left feeling like you're navigating the shift into early adulthood without a map, or charting new waters without land in sight. You may feel like you're doing a lot more, but not necessarily getting a lot more done, and the expectation that reaching a certain milestone will bring comfort is constantly being met with disappointment, leaving you feeling unmotivated and unfulfilled.

My therapeutic style incorporates a strengths-based approach to build off what is already working for you or going well in your life. I foster an anti-racist, anti-oppressive, and intersectional approach in my practice by making sure we first establish our positionality and the power dynamic within the therapeutic alliance. I want our sessions to act as a teaching-learning environment—I have just as much to learn from you as you have from me. We will explore what you want to get out of our sessions and work through any psychoeducation on topics you would like to further understand before moving into the work together.

We are up against special challenges for our times, I think. If you have been feeling restless, distracted or unhappy, it is to be expected. And I’d like to see if I can help. You may be thinking about therapy because of a life change, behavioral concern, dilemma, stuck feelings, or crisis. A good, therapeutic relationship can help you find more meaning in your life, be more present in relationships, think more creatively and support your self-esteem.

I have over 30 years of experience working with adults, children and families, and an ongoing passion and engagement in the art of psychotherapy. When the fit is right, a good therapeutic relationship can provide a powerful vehicle for healing and transformation. I think for therapy to really gel, you need to feel that your therapist gets you, perhaps in a way few others have. Adults I work with often tell me they have that experience with me, that they feel fully seen and understood. My work with children began in my earliest days as a therapist - and it continues to be a central part of my practice.

Do you want results? Are you finding that you keep getting in your own way? That your emotions, trauma, pain, old stories and anxiety are preventing you from living the life you are meant to live? Or maybe nothing is clicking for you, no matter how are hard you try. The good news is that there is always a way, a technique or subtle perspective that can and will shift you and your life. The catch? You need to be willing to step into the unknown and get uncomfortable.

I believe that the therapeutic process, although painful at times, is very rewarding and that individuals can heal and have fulfilling lives from engaging in treatment. My ideal client is a person who is willing to consistently attend therapy and trust in the process. I understand that "resistance" is a necessary part of treatment and believe that trust comes when the client and therapist continue to interact with each other. Therapy can be an unique and rewarding experience; please join me on the road to discovering your authentic self.

Let whoever cannot meet at its horizon the subjectivity of his time give it up then. For how could he who knows nothing of the dialectic that engages him in a symbolic movement with so many lives possibly make his being the axis of those lives? Let him be well acquainted with the whorl into which his era draws him in the ongoing enterprise of Babel, and let him be aware of his function as an interpreter in the strife of languages. (Jacques Lacan, Écrits)

FAQs - About Therapy and Counseling

How can I find a therapist in Brooklyn?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
