I am an experienced business professional that entered the field of marriage and family therapy to help others. I have been inspired to change careers to this path as my own life experience taught me about the importance of caring for my mental health to live my best life. As an African American, Queer woman I have worked through the struggles associated with identity, social pressure, the expectations of others, and the importance of building a family of choice.

Life’s journey has many paths—It can become a struggle, or even a crisis, for any of us. If you need help, come, talk confidentially with me. I listen well. You will find me to be non-judgmental. I welcome all people—couples, families, adults, seniors and youth from 8 to 18. Meeting you would be my privilege. Helping you would be my mission. With nearly 50 years of social work experience, including an Appointment by President George H. W. Bush to serve as Commissioner of the Children’s Bureau, my work experience, rarely matched, helps me help you, as do my PhD education and life experience,

We all experience periods in our lives when we need additional support. Whether you are confronting a major life change or just haven't been yourself lately, as your therapist I will listen carefully to understand what you are experiencing. My main goal is to give you perspective on the problem and help you identify the route by which you would like to move through it. When needed, I teach coping skills drawn from my own use of mindfulness, as well as relaxation, distress tolerance, and emotion regulation techniques. With your permission, I collaborate with your medication prescriber as needed.

With 39 years of experience working in a variety of mental health settings, there is not much I have not heard. I have learned that most of the stress of life's challenges comes from our perspective and the choices we make based on it. Sometimes this can lead to frustration, anxiety, or depression. When we change our perspective, we find choices and solutions we hadn't considered before. Changing perspective is not easy. I use a variety of skills to assist people in successfully managing life's challenges and developing their own skills to live life effectively and joyfully.

I am Certified in EMDR. EMDR is a trauma therapy which research has shown to be highly effective. The most important characteristics of a good therapist are intelligent listening, the ability to use multiple skills according to the needs of the client, and most importantly, compassion. I have worked with depression and anxiety (among other issues) for 31 years. It is very difficult to seek help at a time when one is most vulnerable and I am especially sensitive to this with my clients.

Are you tired of feeling disconnected from yourself? Do you feel like you need to get rid of old ways of thinking so you can fully be yourself again? When you go through trauma, stress, loss, and confusion in life, it changes the way you see the world because you never, ever want to experience that again. You start to move through the world doing everything to avoid the risk of these horrible things ever happening again. This way works for a while, but over time you feel disconnected- from the world, those you love, and yourself. If you are ready to get rid of these ways of thinking and live fully in the world, I can help.

If you are struggling with the aftereffects of trauma, there is hope. People can and do recover. You may never forget what happened, but the trauma can lose its haunting power, and you can rebuild your life. For more than a decade, I have had the privilege of witnessing clients recover in the aftermath of life-threatening events, sexual violation, and devastating loss. My expertise is using brief, evidence-based psychotherapies to help people do just this.

My ideal clients are individuals, families, adults, and the elderly who need assistance with life transitions, trauma, emotional struggles, identity issues, relationships, career difficulties, infertility, maternal/child health/grief/loss, or aging processes. Individuals may feel overwhelmed by unresolved emotions, past experiences, or recurring patterns in their behavior that hinder personal growth and relationships. They aim to gain clarity, achieve emotional healing, and develop a stronger sense of self. Ultimately, they seek empowerment, resilience, and the ability to create lasting, positive changes in their lives.

So you've had enough. You've had enough of people acting like you don't have a life of your own, your issues to worry about, your stress- because they expect you to solve their problems. When you've been drowning in work and stress, they give you a high five instead of a life vest. You're not looking for anyone to save you; you want a break, some appreciation, and maybe even some peace. It doesn't seem like too much to ask.

Dissociative Disorders (DID) Therapists

How does therapy for dissociative disorders work?

Dissociation may be triggered by stress or other upsetting circumstances, and therapy can address the traumatic events at the core of an individual’s dissociation. Understanding why a person may dissociate can help the therapist and the individual come up with alternative methods of coping. A person with a dissociative disorder may get stuck on negative thinking, for example, and treatment like Cognitive behavioral therapy is a gold standard for breaking such thinking. And dialectical behavior therapy, for example, can help a person manage their anguish through better emotion regulation.

Which therapies are best for dissociative disorders?

Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioral, dialectical behavior, psychodynamic, schema therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavior therapies are two widely used therapies that can help individuals with painful memories and past traumas. These therapies work to integrate an individual's different identities into one person.

Are there specific medications for dissociation?

There are no specific medications prescribed for dissociative disorders. However, psychosis, depression, anxiety, and/or panic often co-occur in dissociative disorders. A psychiatrist may prescribe medications for any accompanying symptom—which may include antipsychotics like aripiprazole, antidepressants like selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or anti-anxiety drugs like benzodiazepines.

How often and how long are therapy sessions?

Like any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Patients may see improvement within 15 to 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, perhaps, a six-month period. There are still other patients, especially those who have co-occurring conditions like depression and anxiety, who may need to continue sessions for up to 12 to 18 months.
