Feeling stuck? We all face challenges, but there’s no reason you should struggle alone when help is available. You deserve to feel better and work through the obstacles that keep you from living your best life. As a clinician in the mental health and substance abuse field for almost 20 years, it's been my privilege to support many courageous individuals in their quest for healing. No two journeys have been the same. I have learned to be present and trust the process. There are many methods, strategies and skills that we can employ to help you resolve current issues and create new possibilities. You just need to begin.

Do you find yourself conflicted within your thoughts and feelings? Do you spend a lot of mental energy trying to cope with your inner angst and turmoil or sadness or anger? maybe even rage? or Fear? Do you find yourself wishing you knew how to feel better emotionally so you could just be more happy in life? Our Feelings are a wonderful gift that makes us HUMAN but when our feelings are not balanced, when we are carrying unresolved issues from past, when we are flooded by feelings and not able to see things clearly, they provide the biggest pain and heartache in life. Would you like someone to help you with your inner struggle?

It's not easy reaching out for professional help with relationship, family or emotional problems, but I hope you choose to take this important first step toward changing your life for the better. In my 30 years of practice, I have never felt a greater sense of hope and optimism about what talk therapy can realistically offer to reduce suffering and improve our personal and family lives. I can present you with a "user friendly" path into treatment that will ease your very understandable anxiety and skepticism. My goals for you as a client are learning, growth, empowerment and customer satisfaction.

Crises or life stressors are often what initially bring people to therapy. Others come to work on old issues that continue to re-surface, causing problems for the individuals themselves or in their relationships with family, or at work. Many people find therapy to be a place where they can work on increasing personal insight and self-awareness in order to live more fulfilling lives, and work toward achieving their highest potential. Whatever brings you here, therapy can be a place to help you restore balance in your life and live life to the fullest. In therapy, we work together to bring about lasting change.

Kindness. Letting Go. Acceptance. Patience. Trust. Peace. If these words resonate with you, you may benefit from an approach like mindfulness based cognitive behavioral therapy. With this approach you can practice being kind and accepting towards yourself, including your thoughts and feelings, while at the same time working towards understanding and changing any unhelpful beliefs, habits, or situations in your life. Modern life, with all its stress and busyness and commotion, seems to combine with our individual challenges, difficulties, and burdens to push our human minds and bodies past the point of health and wellness.

Self-Harming Therapists
How does therapy for self-harm work?
A person may turn to self-injury so that they can distract themselves from their stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances. Therapy can address the cause of an individual’s suffering. A therapist can help a person understand why they may want to self-harm and help the person learn new methods of coping. A person may have poor emotion regulation, and treatment such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is helpful for breaking this behaviour. In addition, treatment such as dialectical behavior therapy can help a person manage their tolerance of distress.
Which therapies are best for self-harm?
Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioral, dialectical behavior, psychodynamic, and mentalisation-based therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavior therapies are common approaches for people who have painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual cope with distress, regulate emotions, and manage impulsive urges.
Does the tendency to self-harm mean the person is suicidal?
Having this urge does not mean the individual suffers from suicidal ideation. People who want to self-injure look to distract or alleviate themselves from the pain they are experiencing. People with suicidal tendencies want to end life altogether. However, this does not mean a person with the intent to self-harm will not attempt suicide.
How often and how long are therapy sessions for self-harm?
As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Clients may see improvement within 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, maybe, a six-month period. People, especially those with co-occurring conditions like depression and anxiety, may need to continue therapy for up to 12 to 18 months.
