Seeking counseling is a sign of strength and listening to your intuition that something doesn’t quite feel right. Every person has their own unique experiences that have helped shape who they are today. You may be experiencing some emptiness, unhappiness, life dissatisfaction, or relational discord with others. I rely on my intuition, training, and mental health expertise to guide you towards uncovering the barriers that are preventing you from achieving happiness and peace of mind. If we don’t have peace within ourselves, how can we attempt to have positive, healthy relationships with others and the world in which we live?

Are you feeling powerless to create change? Or maybe you’re the parent of a child or adolescent who you just can’t seem to get through to. Have you been feeling overwhelmed and stalled with making decisions? Are you angry or hurting and want to better understand your feelings or feelings of another? I support you. It takes a special person to hear what others cannot say. Everyone should have a safe and healing place to talk things out with someone who genuinely listens and is effective in getting their needs met, and toward greater peace of mind.

One of your biggest challenges in therapy is taking the first steps: choosing a therapist and making the first appointment. You may be worried about whether your therapist will be a good fit, finally confronting a problem, or sitting in the same room with your partner or family. Our first conversations will be about how I can help you and whether I'm the right person to help you regain peace in your family or relationship.

I was raised to believe that richness of exposures and depth of trainings make for the best professionals. Before I became a therapist myself, I earned a Ph.D. in an allied field and spent 16 years teaching, at UCLA, USC, and Antioch University West; then I went back to school for clinical training. I specialized in children and families as a base and then went further for psychoanalytic training, one program for adults, another for children and adolescents.

Making change is hard and takes time. There is no ideal time to enter therapy, but I will meet you where you are at in the process, by providing a nonjudgmental and supportive environment. My goal is to support clients through their process, whether that be a student dealing with bullying issues, a life change, improving outlook on life, or dealing with problems. My passion is working with adolescents trying to find their path, helping identify resources and navigate the complicated mental health system in order to access service. I work with children, teenagers, young adults and adults.

Life can be messy! I would like to help you feel more grounded and supported to navigate the challenges. My interests include working with young adults—maybe you are struggling to adjust to college, working, “adulting,” or having relationship issues. I am also passionate about working with women on maternal wellness and motherhood struggles. I have completed specialized perinatal training through PSI and offer video sessions, which many of my mothers find convenient when juggling family and/or work. Please know that you are not alone. Therapy can help to release that “heaviness” you are carrying around.

Accepting new clients I know that making the decision to find a person to speak with is an extremely personal and intimate one. Once this decision is made then comes the search to find the "right" person and this may not be an easy task. I want to reassure you that I understand this and strive to create a relaxed and welcoming environment. I feel the development of a trusting and respectful relationship between client and therapist is vital to the therapeutic process and is a primary goal in treatment. We will talk about your goals and how to use them as motivation in therapy. Then create a plan together to achieve them.

As a trauma therapist, I am here to support my clients with the empathy and compassion they deserve. I firmly believe each of us has a story different from the other, consisting of different experiences that have shaped the core beliefs of ourselves and the world we live in. We each have a right to share our stories, make meaning, and develop healthy strategies and habits to better function in our environments. With specialized training in trauma and experience utilizing several models of therapy, I take an integrative approach in treating a variety of psycho-social concerns in children, adolescents, adults, and families.

Oppositional Defiance (ODD) Therapists

What is the most effective treatment for oppositional defiant disorder?

The treatment of Oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) will involve multiple approaches designed to help both the youngster and their parents, sometimes including medication. A therapist will help a child learn ways to regulate their emotions, curb their impulsiveness, and counteract anger, defiance, and disruption, while showing parents ways to bring these lessons into their home. A technique designed for children with conditions like ODD, known as Collaborative and Proactive Solutions (CPS), may also be used. CPS addresses a child’s concerns and rewards appropriate responses while discouraging harsh punishment or criticism.

How does treatment for oppositional defiant disorder work?

Treatment for ODD addresses the issues underlying a child’s defiance and disruption, the emotional regulation and impulse-control skills they lack, and the way adults respond to them. ODD therapy is based on the idea that children with the disorder understand the difference between right and wrong, that they want to behave well, and that, with help, they can. By responding to the child with empathy instead of harsh criticism, ignoring nonviolent behaviors, and rewarding positive actions, a therapist, and the other adults in a child’s life, can help children improve their behavior.

How long does therapy for oppositional defiant disorder take?

Therapy for oppositional defiant disorder is not a short-term undertaking. Depending on the severity of a child’s symptoms, their age, the presence of other conditions like ADHD, anxiety or a mood disorder, and their family dynamic, it can take months before improvement is noted. The cooperation of parents and teachers is crucial, because the skills learned in therapy must be practiced in real-world situations, with all their potential triggers.

Does oppositional defiant disorder go away?

ODD can remit following treatment. ODD is often diagnosed in nursery school, and early intervention is essential for a positive prognosis. In two-thirds of children, according to the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, symptoms resolve within three years.
