I apply a psychodynamic approach to discuss unresolved conflicts and explore how your previous experiences are affecting your current thoughts and behavior.
Are you okay? How did you answer that question? Did you suddenly feel overwhelmed? Sad? Frustrated? Deciding to engage in therapy is not easy. Having to face emotions that you have not dealt with for days, months, years, decades, can be overwhelming. Recognizing that you may have feelings and experiences that you have not dealt with, acknowledging the long therapeutic process, and overcoming stigma, are only a few of the challenges that people may face. I am here to remind you that I can and will support you through the first steps.

I utilize a psychodynamic and psychoanalytic approach to clinical care.
Do you ever feel plagued by your own internal dialogue never shutting off? Struggling with your thoughts continually spiraling that range from going over your never-ending to-do list to intrusive thoughts that cause you to pause with concern? Let's explore it further together. As a fellow self-healer, I am passionate about helping my clients own their stories and eliminate shame through fostering internal safety. I fundamentally believe that when we move through our limiting beliefs, we come face to face with our potentials. Trauma causes us to fight, flight and freeze. Let's get out of survival together so you can THRIVE.

Every one of us are complex beings, influenced by our parents, the prevailing culture, our peers, and the social institutions we encounter. We are also carrying the weight of traumatic experiences both small and great. Integrative therapy with a relational focus helps the client develop and realize their true selves, devoid of unwanted influences. This therapy is a journey built on trust and mutual respect. In couples work, we learn how past family scripts effect the marriage. Often times, family members pass these family mantras to their children unknowingly, which results in their depression and anxiety.

I believe that therapy can be a tool for introspection to support growth, healing, or problem-solving. As your therapist, I aim to create an open, safe, and supportive environment that will allow you to feel seen and heard. Every individual has their own unique life experiences so there is no room for a one-size-fits-all attitude. I have an interest in helping those who have experienced complex/childhood trauma, abuse, loss, relational and workplace challenges, as well as millennials and GenZers navigating education, employment, finances, and relationships (overall, adulting!)

Have you ever asked yourself, 'Why do I seem to continually choose the same type of life partner, especially when I know that it didn't work out the last time? I know I didn't intentionally set out to, so why does it seem to happen again and again?' There is an answer to this question and it lies within you. Looking at your values and beliefs will provide insight, and the result can be very rewarding. If you would like to take a look at yourself, do call me. I can provide a reflection.

Life often times brings us through situations that become complex based on the unique way we view the world. This complexity of thought emotions and preconceived notions form the manner in which we cope with or deal with life. This is especially true when dealing with addiction, anxiety, trauma, anger, depression, divorce; and those times our lives when things just don't seem right. Together we will create an awareness of you. Through this awareness the areas needing change will surface, it is then that the skills needed to implement the change you have chosen are developed.

I have been in private practice for over 35 years and believe that people can truly change their lives. People can take very difficult experiences in their lives and use them to develop a more meaningful life. I draw from my own experiences while I work with my clients and believe that change can happen at any age. People can use grief, loss, trauma and life's most difficult experiences to develop meaning that they may never have had. Finding your own spirituality and your own style of coping is what makes it unique.

Psychodynamic Therapists

Is psychodynamic therapy evidence-based?

Studies have found psychodynamic therapy to be effective in treating conditions like social anxiety, eating disorders, chronic pain, some personality disorders, and depression; indeed, some studies have found it to be just as effective as CBT or medication. What’s more, several studies have found that the benefits of psychodynamic therapy tend to endure—even grow—long after treatment has ended.

How long does psychodynamic therapy last?

Unlike CBT and other more structured forms of therapy, psychodynamic therapy tends to be open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a year or longer and to see their therapist one to three times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a client’s challenges and progress. However, brief psychodynamic therapy is available, which tends to be more goal-oriented and typically unfolds over 16 to 30 sessions.

Does psychodynamic therapy work?

Research finds that psychodynamic therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of diagnosable mental health conditions like depression or anxiety. The modality may also offer a range of benefits that are harder to measure but just as valuable—such as increased self-worth or healthier relationships. While no therapy type will work for everyone, research and anecdotal evidence suggest that psychodynamic therapy can be highly effective.

What are the limitations of psychodynamic therapy?

Some meta-analyses have concluded that there is little evidence to suggest that psychodynamic therapy can effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as PTSD, OCD, or psychosis, though it is sometimes used to do so. More broadly, the open-ended, free-association structure of psychodynamic therapy may be frustrating for clients who prefer a more structured, time-limited, or goal-oriented approach.
