NEW- I have a few slots available and am running a, "Navigating the Holidays in Recovery" group. If your goals are to explore your emotions, behaviors and beliefs surrounding body image and your relationship to food, I am hoping to be able to provide compassion and support to you in order to find lasting healing and self-acceptance. I work with folks of all ages (16 and up) as well as incorporate family/partner as needed. I enjoy working with people who are focused on recovery, motivated to work on themselves, and willing to dig into the main reason their eating disorder is present in the first place.

I specialize in eating disorders and enjoy working with those who are looking to maintain their recovery.
I enjoy working with women who are looking to find their life work and soul's calling. Who desire a stronger connection to the earth and their ancestors and have a desire to slow down. I often work with women who carry a great deal of stress in their bodies from past trauma - showing up as autoimmune and hormonal issues. We will work together to find the root of the symptoms arising to allow for healing. My focus is on helping you find meaning in your life while fostering a sense of purpose. We will work together to build your own personal narrative through the use of art, nature, writing, & meditation.

On the outside, it looks like you have it all together. You’re a straight-A student or excelling at your job; you’re ambitious and driven. But at a closer look, everything is a mess. You hate the way you look, your body feels like it has betrayed you over and over again, and the only thing that makes it better is controlling your food. It’s become exhausting, you can’t think, you are struggling to spend time with friends and family, in case they find out how bad it has gotten, and you’re feeling alone and like things will never get better. It’s time to do something different.

I often tell potential clients, “Ideally, you should be able to tell your therapist anything; if you can't, it might be time to find a new therapist". Accordingly, I believe the one of the most important factors for therapy success is to have an strong and trusting relationship with your therapist. My job is to see you clearly. If I can see you clearly, perhaps you can see yourself more clearly, and that can make all the difference. Together we will work to help you see your self clearly and compassionately; and to help alleviate the pain and anxiety getting in the way of living your best life.

Over 20 years of clinical experience working with adolescents, teenagers, and young adults struggling with depression, anxiety, trauma, life transitions, and addiction in various treatment settings. Diversity and multicultural issues are embedded in everything we do and contribute to presenting problems. I am conscious of varying decision-making preferences, the role of family dynamics, stages of life, socioeconomic status, and issues related to sexual orientation and gender identity. As well as the stigma associated with seeking mental health services.

Are you weighed down by worries, regrets, traumas, hurt, or pain? Everyone has a story and should have the opportunity to tell it in a non-judgmental environment. I am a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), and my areas of expertise include young through older adults with trauma, depression, anxiety, and substance use/co-occurring disorders. As an eclectic, person-centered therapist I believe in tailoring treatment to each client’s needs, so I do not use one modality across the board. I’ve always been highly empathic and view issues in a destigmatizing way: I don’t ask what is wrong with you, but what happened to you?

As a Psychologist, for 20 years I have enjoyed working with adults, adolescents, couples and families. Over the years I have learned that the single most important aspect to productive therapy is having a trusting, empathic connection with your therapist. Additionally, it is important that your therapist is highly skilled, appropriately trained and experienced. Finding the right therapist is very important, therefore I always encourage people to investigate several options in order to find that supportive, genuine and safe connection that is right for them. Given that belief, I would be happy to be interviewed by you.

My work as a psychotherapist is rooted in a profound belief that by recognizing and honoring our complex, messy life stories with honesty and gentleness, we lay the foundation to heal the obstacles preventing us from building fulfilling, meaningful lives. Throughout life, we all create narratives about ourselves to help us survive. These narratives are shaped by myriad factors (individual life experiences, relationships, intergenerational legacies, and experiences of oppression/privilege, belonging/rejection, among others). Over time, our narratives and coping mechanisms fall short. We wonder, what went wrong? What's wrong with me?

Eating Disorders Therapists

What happens in therapy for eating disorders?

In therapy for eating disorders, patients typically describe their eating and exercise behaviors, their patterns of eating in relation to stress, their beliefs about their body, the ways their eating behavior affects their relationships, and their desire (or lack of it) to change. Such information helps the therapist understand the origins of the disorder and the role it plays in the patient’s life, important for guiding treatment. Attitudes and feelings about food and eating, body weight, and physical appearance are common topics of discussion throughout treatment.

What therapy types help with eating disorders?

Once any acute medical or psychiatric emergency is resolved, psychoactive medication is often prescribed, requiring the supervision of a psychiatrist. In addition, patients receive some form of nutritional counseling along with one or more forms of psychotherapy. For adolescents, family-based treatment is empirically validated and considered the first line of treatment; parents and their children meet weekly with a clinician as the adults are coached on how to nourish and psychologically support the young patient. Adults typically receive some form of individual psychotherapy, intended to resolve the cognitive and behavioral disturbances that underlie the disorder and to relieve the mood disturbances that accompany it. In addition, patients may also be helped by group therapy.

What is the goal of therapy for eating disorders?

The most immediate goal of treatment for eating disorders is to save the life of people who are on a path of starving themselves to death or engaging in eating patterns that are doing irreparable physical harm to their body. Once the acute medical danger is past, therapy is required to understand the nature of the disordered eating and/or exercise patterns, establish healthy eating behavior, and to tackle the many erroneous beliefs and distorted self-perceptions that underlie eating disorders and continue to pose a threat to health and life. Therapy also addresses the impaired mood that not only accompanies eating disorders but intensifies the danger to health and life.

What are the limitations of therapy for eating disorders?

Therapy can be very helpful for eating disorders—but that can happen only after people recognize they have a condition that must be treated. Especially with anorexia, the distortions in self-image that accompany the disorder can keep people from acknowledging they have a problem. Individuals may in fact see their eating disorder as a badge of self-control. Those with binge-eating disorder may feel too ashamed to seek help. Therapy cannot help those who do not avail themselves of it.

How long does therapy last for eating disorders?

Because of their complexity, recovery from eating disorders is usually a long-term process—measured in months and years— often marked by setbacks and relapse. Some form of help, such as individual or group therapy, may be advisable for much of that time. It is a general rule of thumb that the longer the illness has endured and the dysregulated eating behavior has taken root, the longer treatment is likely to be needed.
