Feeling overwhelmed? There is no problem too big that can't be solved, no issue from which there is no relief. Taking that first step to begin therapy can seem hard, but contact me and let's see if we can work together. We can solve it together. I have seen the power of individuals to make positive changes. I specialize in unearthing how past distressing emotional experiences or traumas effect how we process current events. I am an EMDR therapist, and trainer.

Sometimes life can feel unmanageable and prevent us from reaching our personal goals in life. Therapy can open new doors to connecting more deeply with ourselves and others. Taking the step to seek therapy can be frightening and difficult. As a therapist my goal is to help individuals, families, and couples overcome life's challenges.

Whether with partners, family, friends, children, parents or at your work, relationships are the centerpieces of our lives. Handled thoughtfully, they uplift, or they can frustrate, provoke guilt and aggravate. For twenty-five years I have helped people to find greater satisfaction through better understanding of the events in their lives, along with honest discussions of options and helping to find the motivation to move forward. I have published articles about marriage, parenting, and growing healthier relationships, and a book: HOW TO KNOW IF ITS TIME TO GO. Website: lbirnbach.com. I work interactively and confidentially.

I enjoy working with people who want to have a richer and more satisfying life and are willing to take emotional risks in order to be happier. I recognize how easily we can become stuck in old habits of thought and behavior that limit our lives. Therapy is a wonderful process for change. You can expect from me respect, an ability to deeply understand you, and the experience and knowledge to help you change the things in your life that are causing you problems. I'm trained in psychodynamic, Gestalt, EMDR, family systems, cognitive behavioral, marital and art therapies.

I help people make sense of their internal lives by helping to identify and understand the spectrum of emotions one feels in a safe, nonjudgmental environment. I help give feelings and behaviors a deeper context for understanding which is an essential first step towards healing. I'm passionate about my work and have 28 yrs of experience working with individuals and couples. My style is engaged, collaborative, and direct. I started off as a "family systems" trained social worker, and later obtained certificates in both Psychoanalysis in 2006 and Somatic Experiencing Therapy in 2019 (body-based/trauma).

Dissociative Disorders (DID) Therapists

How does therapy for dissociative disorders work?

Dissociation may be triggered by stress or other upsetting circumstances, and therapy can address the traumatic events at the core of an individual’s dissociation. Understanding why a person may dissociate can help the therapist and the individual come up with alternative methods of coping. A person with a dissociative disorder may get stuck on negative thinking, for example, and treatment like Cognitive behavioral therapy is a gold standard for breaking such thinking. And dialectical behavior therapy, for example, can help a person manage their anguish through better emotion regulation.

Which therapies are best for dissociative disorders?

Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioral, dialectical behavior, psychodynamic, schema therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavior therapies are two widely used therapies that can help individuals with painful memories and past traumas. These therapies work to integrate an individual's different identities into one person.

Are there specific medications for dissociation?

There are no specific medications prescribed for dissociative disorders. However, psychosis, depression, anxiety, and/or panic often co-occur in dissociative disorders. A psychiatrist may prescribe medications for any accompanying symptom—which may include antipsychotics like aripiprazole, antidepressants like selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or anti-anxiety drugs like benzodiazepines.

How often and how long are therapy sessions?

Like any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Patients may see improvement within 15 to 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, perhaps, a six-month period. There are still other patients, especially those who have co-occurring conditions like depression and anxiety, who may need to continue sessions for up to 12 to 18 months.
