My practice aims to restore each person's innate mental and physical balance. I help people analyze their relationships, find patterns and learn new behaviors and ways of coping. I like to work closely with primary care physicians to optimize each client's total health.Because of my research background, I strive to stay current on evidence-based practice and to use the new findings of brain science to help people overcome mental disorders which can be helped by restoring brain health. I use clinical hypnotherapy to help patients with chronic pain and anxiety as well as for performance. I am also certified in EMDR

I specialize in treating children, adolescents, families and couples. I have over twenty years of experience in advocating and working collaboratively with pediatrics schools and parents in order to meet the specific needs of each individual child and their family. I believe strongly in empowering young people and their families by using a strengths based approach. I believe that parent and co-parent coaching can strengthen the core of the family, thereby allowing more time and energy for joy, active presence, and connection.

My psychotherapy practice is dedicated to helping people overcome difficulties in managing troubling emotions, dysfunctional behaviors, or problems in career, relationship, or life transition. Working primarily in short-term cognitive behavioral models, trouble areas are defined and broken down. Clients are actively encouraged to collaborate on developing new, healthier perspectives, and to generate and practice effective coping strategies and skills. Foundations in psychodynamic and developmental theory, neuroscience, as well as eastern philosophy and mindfulness practice often inform and shape the course of work.

I specialize in mood disorders and anxiety. I've published five books--Undoing Depression is probably the most familiar---on depression, stress, and happiness, My latest, "Rewire," was released August 2014, and I'm working on a new book about self-destructive behavior. My approach is basically psychodynamic, with a lot of CBT and mindfulness. I believe that anyone can change--the brain can literally be rewired--but it takes a lot of patience and practice. Most of the people I meet have been battered around by life, and it's left scars--difficulty hoping, difficulty trusting. It's my job to mobilize that hope and trust.

Life is not easy and in this increasingly disconnected society, we often feel alone even when living among the people that we love. As an experienced therapist, I offer a connection built on honesty, authenticity, and empathy. By developing and fostering this connection, we can face your pain together while also uncovering and challenging blocks that hinder your own ability to heal yourself. I use a variety of modalities to help each person meet his or her goals, though EMDR and Interpersonal Process Therapy are my most common approaches to treatment.

The old stories play back in your head - an event, a relationship, a group of friends. It's hard not to compare ‘now’ to those days; life is so much harder to cope with. You wonder why you no longer connect to people in the way you once did, or maybe you never really did at all. It's a roller coaster of feelings; these memories and old stories seem to have something to do with it. You know you need help figuring it all out- the ways you've been influenced, affected, and the roles you've played in it all. Most of all, you need someone to help you re-connect to others and help you figure out who you are really meant to be.

As we are all different, so is each therapeutic relationship. Therefore, no one approach works for all. I strive to meet people just as and where they are. We best serve others by seeing them as a whole within the context of their environment. This includes our: mental wellness/ state of mind, physical/ state of body, and spiritual/ state of soul. Together we will explore the relationship between your beliefs, experiences, and the lens in which you see yourself and the world around you. My practice is person-centered and strength-based; providing insight, advocacy, education and encouragement to help people reach their goals.

My approach is primarily psychodynamic but I have also had good outcomes incorporating aspects of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and Trauma Focused (TF-CBT).
By seeking therapy you are taking an important step toward achieving a greater sense of fulfillment in life. You may currently be experiencing painful feelings, longstanding problems, or feeling stuck in repetitive patterns. Therapy can provide an opportunity to better understand the problems that occur in your life. Developing insight into yourself can lead to lasting change, such as more satisfying relationships, a more gratifying experience at work, recovery from trauma, and an alleviation of symptoms of anxiety and depression.

My training is grounded in psychodynamic theory, but I also draw upon modalities such as cognitive-behavioral techniques to adapt treatment to the particular individual.
If you are a young adult, you know all too well how stressful and confusing this period of life can be. The recent political upheaval in the country may now be adding to your distress, causing you to feel overwhelmed and fearful for your future. Many of my clients start therapy between the ages of 18 and 40, reporting anxiety, depression, low self-esteem and frustration with work and school. At such times, a psychotherapist who understands what you are going through can help you to regain your balance and to experience increased satisfaction and meaning in your life.

I provide CBT, DBT, EMDR, psychodynamic work and tangible actions or insight for clients to utilize inside and outside of sessions to ensure they get the most out of our work together.
I invite clients struggling with an array of issues from anxiety, codependency, addiction, and eating disorders to work with me. I am usually the best fit for people who are motivated and looking to make difficult changes in their life that they have struggled with managing on their own and need more accountability.. My goal is to help you shrink the gap between where you are and where you want to be. I gently challenge limiting beliefs, whether it is perfectionism or "not enoughness" that usually hold people back from being their truest selves. My approach is softly assertive and active with clients.

Psychodynamic Therapists
Is psychodynamic therapy evidence-based?
Studies have found psychodynamic therapy to be effective in treating conditions like social anxiety, eating disorders, chronic pain, some personality disorders, and depression; indeed, some studies have found it to be just as effective as CBT or medication. What’s more, several studies have found that the benefits of psychodynamic therapy tend to endure—even grow—long after treatment has ended.
How long does psychodynamic therapy last?
Unlike CBT and other more structured forms of therapy, psychodynamic therapy tends to be open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a year or longer and to see their therapist one to three times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a client’s challenges and progress. However, brief psychodynamic therapy is available, which tends to be more goal-oriented and typically unfolds over 16 to 30 sessions.
Does psychodynamic therapy work?
Research finds that psychodynamic therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of diagnosable mental health conditions like depression or anxiety. The modality may also offer a range of benefits that are harder to measure but just as valuable—such as increased self-worth or healthier relationships. While no therapy type will work for everyone, research and anecdotal evidence suggest that psychodynamic therapy can be highly effective.
What are the limitations of psychodynamic therapy?
Some meta-analyses have concluded that there is little evidence to suggest that psychodynamic therapy can effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as PTSD, OCD, or psychosis, though it is sometimes used to do so. More broadly, the open-ended, free-association structure of psychodynamic therapy may be frustrating for clients who prefer a more structured, time-limited, or goal-oriented approach.
