Feeling overwhelmed? Looking for a therapist isn't easy. You may be reading profile after profile thinking all of these people sound the same or may have no idea what any of this means. You’re not alone! Most people don’t care about the interventions or methods of therapy used. They just want to feel better! I believe the answer to feeling better lies in the connection. A good therapist is someone you can trust, open up to, and share yourself with, so that you can learn to overcome the challenges you are struggling with and can grow!

My work as a psychotherapist is rooted in a profound belief that by recognizing and honoring our complex, messy life stories with honesty and gentleness, we lay the foundation to heal the obstacles preventing us from building fulfilling, meaningful lives. Throughout life, we all create narratives about ourselves to help us survive. These narratives are shaped by myriad factors (individual life experiences, relationships, intergenerational legacies, and experiences of oppression/privilege, belonging/rejection, among others). Over time, our narratives and coping mechanisms fall short. We wonder, what went wrong? What's wrong with me?

I am committed to the work of conscious partnerships, mindful parenting, and healing from trauma to live free of anxiety and depression. My work is psychodynamic: integrating psychoanalyic and attachment theories, IFS, contemplative inquiry, meditative practices and relational awareness for healing and happiness.

For example, psychodynamic therapy to resolve how early life stresses deepen current difficulties, cognitive-behavioral therapy to change how negative thinking and problematic behaviors hurt progress in life, or EMDR to resolve traumatic memories.
If you have excess stresses, repeated disappointments, or detachment from others, then let's find ways to resolve your difficulties. I have the privilege of serving many individuals with various psychological, emotional, and behavioral concerns. My focus is talk therapy with adults where we collaboratively explore your thoughts, feelings, and actions. We can utilize different methods to treat anxiety and depression, as well as to address issues with closeness, assertiveness, and grief. Oftentimes, relational experiences in the present rekindle our unresolved past developmental traumas or re-enact our maladaptive responses.

I utilize an eclectic approach of evidence-based modalities including psychodynamic, narrative, strengths-based, mindfulness, and EMDR to help you achieve your change.
Naturally, as we live we develop ways of coping in an attempt to thrive. However, we sometimes face painful life experiences and become stuck, experience decreased self esteem, or strained relationships. We may have difficulty harnessing our inner strengths resulting in pain and confusion. Therapy can empower you to thrive during times of change.

My treatment style is psychodynamic, relational, and cognitively oriented.
If you are considering therapy for yourself, child, or family, there is a reason for it, and one that you have to trust. Therapy can help you reach your specific goals such as improved relationships, working through a difficult past, or a recent life transition. When working with children, I seek to understand their perceptions, while bolstering their reasoning and communication skills. The ways in which we reflect on our stories are evolutionary and developmental, changing over time.

I have been practicing psychodynamic, cognitive behavioral, and couples therapy for over thirty years. I believe that all of us are attempting to better understand our emotions/actions in order to develop a stronger sense of self and to achieve more satisfying personal relationships and careers. While I have completed five years of postdoctoral training geared toward working with highly motivated, insight oriented patients, I have worked in many different communities with diverse populations and am quite comfortable with assisting men, women and children from all walks of life in achieving their personal goals for growth.

Psychodynamic Therapists

Is psychodynamic therapy evidence-based?

Studies have found psychodynamic therapy to be effective in treating conditions like social anxiety, eating disorders, chronic pain, some personality disorders, and depression; indeed, some studies have found it to be just as effective as CBT or medication. What’s more, several studies have found that the benefits of psychodynamic therapy tend to endure—even grow—long after treatment has ended.

How long does psychodynamic therapy last?

Unlike CBT and other more structured forms of therapy, psychodynamic therapy tends to be open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a year or longer and to see their therapist one to three times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a client’s challenges and progress. However, brief psychodynamic therapy is available, which tends to be more goal-oriented and typically unfolds over 16 to 30 sessions.

Does psychodynamic therapy work?

Research finds that psychodynamic therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of diagnosable mental health conditions like depression or anxiety. The modality may also offer a range of benefits that are harder to measure but just as valuable—such as increased self-worth or healthier relationships. While no therapy type will work for everyone, research and anecdotal evidence suggest that psychodynamic therapy can be highly effective.

What are the limitations of psychodynamic therapy?

Some meta-analyses have concluded that there is little evidence to suggest that psychodynamic therapy can effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as PTSD, OCD, or psychosis, though it is sometimes used to do so. More broadly, the open-ended, free-association structure of psychodynamic therapy may be frustrating for clients who prefer a more structured, time-limited, or goal-oriented approach.
