The mind can often feel like a busy hive—buzzing with conflicting thoughts, emotions, and behaviors that need to be understood and balanced. This group practice functions on the idea that individuals, families, and communities are not singular, isolated entities but are deeply interconnected with one another. Our approaches to practice empower individuals and families to build resilience by enhancing coping strategies, promoting adaptive behaviors, and fostering positive social support systems, all of which play key roles in an individual's healing and well-being.

I am a child and family therapist who prefers to work with children who show oppositional behavior and other problematic behaviors. Are you experiencing difficulty communicating with your child? Do you feel like you're trying to help your child but your child doesn't recognize this? Perhaps you are aware that something is bothering your child but you and your child can't put your finger on it. You may have heard from the school that your child is having difficulty in school and your having trouble identifying what is causing this.

Mental wellness has always been at the forefront of my experience. Growing up in a Caribbean culture, I have witnessed pervasive stigma around mental health. It has always motivated me to be a trailblazer in the field. My focus centers around helping patients work towards an optimal, fulfilling, and productive life.

My approach to therapy is holistic and integrative. I use both evidence-based therapies (e.g., CBT & DBT) and alternative practices to effect change. Sessions are collaborative in nature and tailored to your needs. Initial treatment will focus on addressing your immediate concerns. Later stages of treatment often include a deeper healing focus to improve the likelihood of sustained positive change.

I love working with adolescents, adults, and families because I get the chance to help foster change. I believe the best approach to therapy is to use a variety of treatment modalities to think outside of the box. I use creative approaches as well as encouraging self reflection as a way to meet a client where they are. Together we will build a trusting relationship, patience and will work towards positive growth. I believe individuals should feel empowered to express their feelings in a safe and positive environment and be the best version of themselves.

Oppositional Defiance (ODD) Therapists

What is the most effective treatment for oppositional defiant disorder?

The treatment of Oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) will involve multiple approaches designed to help both the youngster and their parents, sometimes including medication. A therapist will help a child learn ways to regulate their emotions, curb their impulsiveness, and counteract anger, defiance, and disruption, while showing parents ways to bring these lessons into their home. A technique designed for children with conditions like ODD, known as Collaborative and Proactive Solutions (CPS), may also be used. CPS addresses a child’s concerns and rewards appropriate responses while discouraging harsh punishment or criticism.

How does treatment for oppositional defiant disorder work?

Treatment for ODD addresses the issues underlying a child’s defiance and disruption, the emotional regulation and impulse-control skills they lack, and the way adults respond to them. ODD therapy is based on the idea that children with the disorder understand the difference between right and wrong, that they want to behave well, and that, with help, they can. By responding to the child with empathy instead of harsh criticism, ignoring nonviolent behaviors, and rewarding positive actions, a therapist, and the other adults in a child’s life, can help children improve their behavior.

How long does therapy for oppositional defiant disorder take?

Therapy for oppositional defiant disorder is not a short-term undertaking. Depending on the severity of a child’s symptoms, their age, the presence of other conditions like ADHD, anxiety or a mood disorder, and their family dynamic, it can take months before improvement is noted. The cooperation of parents and teachers is crucial, because the skills learned in therapy must be practiced in real-world situations, with all their potential triggers.

Does oppositional defiant disorder go away?

ODD can remit following treatment. ODD is often diagnosed in nursery school, and early intervention is essential for a positive prognosis. In two-thirds of children, according to the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, symptoms resolve within three years.
