I believe the relationship between the therapist and client is crucial to the work's success, and that you should feel you have the right "fit".
**Accepting referrals in CT office only** I am an NYU trained licensed clinical social worker and have completed postgraduate work in individual, couples, family and group therapy at several New York City institutes. I am licensed to practice psychotherapy in New York and Connecticut and have private practices in both states. I'm the former director of a children's mental health clinic, but now focus on work with adults, adolescents, couples and families. My areas of expertise include depression, anxiety, grief and loss, trauma, eating disorders, parenting issues, adjustment problems, relationship conflicts, and work difficulties.

Examples of issues addressed include relationship problems, parenting difficulties, depression, anxiety, codependency, self-esteem, and identity clarification.
I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker who employs a family systems theoretical perspective in doing counseling with adults, adolescents, and children. Depending upon the particular client, I will conduct individual, couple/marital, or family sessions to help individuals gain insight into the dynamics of his or her family of origin. This approach includes an examination of the manner in which these behavior patterns are currently influencing the client's relationships with dating partners, spouses, children, in-laws, friends, co-workers, supervisors, employers, and other significant individuals in the client's life.

I also work with couples to resolve interpersonal difficulties.
Living one's life with courage, insight and vitality is not always easy. Relationships can be difficult, disappointing or elusive. Families and careers can be demanding and exhausting. Transitions arrive and losses mount up. Anxiety, depression, self-doubt and low motivation may arise amidst the stress.

SINCERE APOLOGIES BUT TERRY'S CLIENT LIST IS CURRENTLY FULL. . . Terry maintains an office in a smart quiet setting where clients feel at ease without being treated like appointments. Her dedication and acuity make her known as the "therapist's therapist," to whom other therapists refer their friends. It's Terry's rare combination of humility and capability that makes sessions feel so enjoyable and collaborative. She invites clients into the fascination of how our relationships naturally hang onto a tit-for-tat motion. While this round-and-round momentum shapes who we are, it does not have to limit who we want to become.

***Evening appointments available*** We all experience times in our lives when we need someone to talk to, someone to listen, someone to help us see things from a different perspective. Whether it’s times of sadness, feeling overwhelmed, or simply finding ourselves at a crossroads, these situations can leave us feeling uncertain about how to move forward successfully in life. For more than fifteen years, I have been helping people to change their lives by increasing their understanding of themselves and the people around them.

During difficult times, we can feel overwhelmed and stuck, unable to break ineffective or even destructive cycles. Getting “unstuck” involves incorporating new skills and concepts, such as psychological flexibility, self-awareness, assertive communication skills, mindfulness, effective coping strategies, insight, decision making skills, and values clarity.

After diverse experiences in healthcare, my passion is supporting individuals and couples in addressing challenges such as; relationship issues, codependency, recovery, symptom management, navigating co-occurring mental health / medical challenges, interpersonal effectiveness, self-care, career issues, grief / loss, parenting and women's issues.
Not Accepting New Clients until Sept. 2024. I look forward to assisting you through the challenges of life and creating a happier and more empowered tomorrow. I often tell clients we all have 'junk in the trunk', it's often the junk we have not dealt with or avoid that sneaks up on us when we least expect it. It complicates this already complicated thing call 'life'. Let me help you unpack the junk, explore its impact on you and how its impact continues to effect you. Through supportive counseling you can take back the reigns and create positive change.

Couples Counseling Therapists

Does couples counseling work?

Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.

When should a couple seek counseling?

Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.

How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?

The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.

How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?

The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
