I work with adults who have difficulties with depression, anxiety, phobias, marital and other relationship conflicts.I see individuals and couples. In addition, I work with teens and children who have school, family, or peer problems. As a psychotherapist with psychoanalytic training, I can help you to be able to: 1. Identify and understand root patterns of behavior that cause depression, anxiety or problems in personal, marital, and professional relationships, and in academic or work performance; and, 2. Learn how to make changes. I use a variety of treatment modalities, such as psychodynamic, behavioral and family therapy, as needed.

You feel overwhelmed, sad, angry and frustrated, but the worst part is the guilt. This is supposed to be the happiest time of your life, and it is difficult to share these feeling with others. Imagine relief from these scary feelings and finding a path to happiness. Individuals who are seeking to find the next step on their journey find our relationship to be a safe place to explore these emotions and develop a renewed sense of self.

My clients struggle with anxiety and depression. Some have been significantly traumatized. I strive to create a safe and nurturing relationship that fosters in-depth self-examination which is the building block to establish (or re-establish) a productive and fulfilling life. This process begins by offering them hope and my assurance that I will work with them to achieve their goals.

Clients who struggle with symptoms of anxiety and depression are frequently confused by why they suffer. My clients work towards understanding themselves and inevitably develop a more positive relationship with themselves through insights.

I am an experienced clinician, who strongly believes that therapy is a partnership. I see my role as helping an individual arrive at mutually agreed upon goals, which will lead to a better quality of life. I am an active participant in our sessions and believe that warmth and sometimes humor are an important part of the therapy process. My therapeutic style is engaged, active and pragmatic. My goal is to create a supportive yet challenging environment, while focusing on getting to the main issues quickly and safely.

I'm so glad you're here. If you're living with depression or anxiety, you've come to the right place. My approaches offer hope, support, and strategies for building forward momentum, so you can shift into a sense of thriving. In whatever way that means for you. It takes bravery to keep pushing forward when depression and anxiety weigh you down; you may feel stuck, wondering if relief - and joy - are possible (yes, they are). Thriving includes acknowledging our depression and anxiety while taking (sometimes small) actions to put ourselves back in the driver's seat. Depression and anxiety do not have to control your life.

When I first meet with clients, my goal is to help them find the main road back to their original journey from the exit that led them to the off ramp- I offer a steady hand for them to successfully maneuver in the foggy season of their lives. I provide a supportive environment suitable for helping clients form new insights in achieving alternate healthier perspectives than the ineffective solutions currently in use. I provide an atmosphere of professionalism, empathy, and privacy suitable for positive growth and achievable solutions.

For me, being a therapist is a privilege. I like to work with anyone eager to understand what is happening to them in their life. Together, we'll try to understand the factors that are creating the trouble - including some of the unconscious ones - and then we'll put them in perspective, cut them down to size, and talk about what can be done. I create a safe, intelligent, and empathic environment for counseling where we can talk about anything without judgment. My office is a safe place to be yourself. So many of our problems have their root in isolation and anxiety, and that is something we can address together.

One size never fits all. Each person and issue needs its own caring approach. Therapy includes: DBT, cognitive-behavioral, family systems, internal family systems, and trauma work, all with acceptance, warmth, and healing. Gains rely on maximum challenge with maximum support. I have successfully struggled in my life as a son, husband, and father of four. I know the pain of being wounded and the rewards of healing. For over 50 years I have helped kids and families as a teacher, school counselor, therapist, and supervising professor in three graduate counseling programs, including the Captains' Masters at the USMA at West Point.

I have been practicing in NYC for over 25 years with a speciality in infertility and family building using donor assistance. I have a strong conviction that therapy can help people lead the lives they dream of having. I am able to use my ability to understand my clients and help them resolve what is getting in their way from attaining those dreams. I have a profound respect for people who desire to change their lives by understanding themselves and I am greatly attuned to the different ways that people go about this. I am able to listen, not only to what my clients say, but to what they really want and need.

When I first meet clients, I encourage them to be fascinated by the way their mind works. An ideal component of a successful therapy is when clients become curious about themselves, which allows them to gain insight into their problems. I personally believe, based on my research and experience, that what the human mind concentrates on has an influence on what happens in one's life. By watching the patterns of our thoughts we can modify and redirect them, with the goal of making healthier and more life-affirming decisions. The human mind has evolved to focus on problems and to anticipate more of them in the future.

Throughout the 40 years I have been helping clients improve their lives, and helping therapists improve professional skills, the resilience of the human spirit continually amazes me. I see therapy as a collaboration, my job being to listen carefully to the issues worrying/frustrating you and your job to present your concerns to me. Together we will develop a working relationship with the goal of overcoming problems and fears. Every person who walks through my door is treated as a unique individual entitled to a personally satisfying life. It is my pleasure to join you on that journey.4

Long-term happiness typically comes from enriching connections to other people. Unfortunately, most of us receive sparse training on how to create and sustain healthy relationships. My particular passion is teaching couples and families how to give love and support--despite our inherent human flaws. In fact, good relationship skills are likely to increase satisfaction and success at work, school, or with friends. I approach couples therapy primarily from the Relational Life perspective developed by Terry Real, but I bring in elements from other modalities when appropriate. The primary focus is your relationship and what you need.

Psychodynamic Therapists

Is psychodynamic therapy evidence-based?

Studies have found psychodynamic therapy to be effective in treating conditions like social anxiety, eating disorders, chronic pain, some personality disorders, and depression; indeed, some studies have found it to be just as effective as CBT or medication. What’s more, several studies have found that the benefits of psychodynamic therapy tend to endure—even grow—long after treatment has ended.

How long does psychodynamic therapy last?

Unlike CBT and other more structured forms of therapy, psychodynamic therapy tends to be open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a year or longer and to see their therapist one to three times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a client’s challenges and progress. However, brief psychodynamic therapy is available, which tends to be more goal-oriented and typically unfolds over 16 to 30 sessions.

Does psychodynamic therapy work?

Research finds that psychodynamic therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of diagnosable mental health conditions like depression or anxiety. The modality may also offer a range of benefits that are harder to measure but just as valuable—such as increased self-worth or healthier relationships. While no therapy type will work for everyone, research and anecdotal evidence suggest that psychodynamic therapy can be highly effective.

What are the limitations of psychodynamic therapy?

Some meta-analyses have concluded that there is little evidence to suggest that psychodynamic therapy can effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as PTSD, OCD, or psychosis, though it is sometimes used to do so. More broadly, the open-ended, free-association structure of psychodynamic therapy may be frustrating for clients who prefer a more structured, time-limited, or goal-oriented approach.
