Life has many challenges, it's how you grow from your past that defines who you are in life. You may feel alone, misunderstood, and unfulfilled with your life or personal relationships. Perhaps you're having intense negative emotions. People typically enter therapy when they are in distress, although it's usually the long-term and underlying struggles that concern them the most. Initially, we will work quickly to address your immediate pain and provide relief. As therapy progresses, our focus may shift so you develop more positive and enriching relationships with yourself and others.

We all have the need to feel supported and understood. Therapy should be constructive and transformative, as well as serve as an important, set aside time for self-care. We know how far the physical environment goes towards making you feel comfortable, and have a positive experience. No one wants the stress of a hectic waiting area before your session, and we have built a comfortable environment to make your therapy appointments feel like a weekly getaway from the hustle and bustle of New York City.

Anxiety, depression, self-criticism, perfectionism, codependency, trauma and other mental health challenges can restrict us from reaching our goals, having meaningful relationships and fully living. These challenges are also accompanied with symptoms that can be problematic, difficult to manage, painful and even debilitating. Yet personal development, whether practiced independently or in the therapeutic setting, can feel daunting and unproductive. People are often at a loss on how to improve their lives. This can lead to dissatisfaction, frustration and despair. This is where I can offer you a different experience.

From my office in Charlottesville, VA, I offer ONLINE only (via ZOOM) therapy for those 18+. Clients don't come to me because they are happy but, most likely, because they are in pain and hurt. They are tired of feeling stuck, and the fear, tears, and whatever seems to be causing them all. They aren’t interested in therapy because they want therapy. In fact, they are not even sure IF they want therapy—but they ARE sure they want to get unstuck and feel better. So, for you: here you are. . . not all that sure that this is going to help but damn sure you want to do something that might make a positive change and get your life moving!

I treat a wide spectrum of conditions including mood and anxiety disorders (e.g., bipolar, depressive and anxiety disorders), ADHD, marital issues and PTSD. My niche is in personality disorders (e.g., borderline and narcissistic PD). I have extensive experience treating trauma sequelas, dissociative disorders and helping individuals overcome grief. My practice also includes treatment of eating disorders in adults (e.g., bulimia) and parasuicidal behaviour. Although my practice is mainly guided by empirical modalities, I tend to approach each client in an eclectic manner to customize treatment as needed.

Here's the scoop. I am not the kind of therapist that quietly takes notes and now and then asks you "How does that make you feel?" Bottom line? Let me tell you about my specialty. My specialty is YOU. I am not invested in keeping you in therapy for years on end. I am very easy to talk to. I have a unique style which is interpersonal, respectful and creative. If you have felt stuck with former therapists, take a chance with me. I look through a different lens. Are these paragraphs starting to all sound the same?

Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA) Therapists

Who is ABA therapy for?

ABA therapy is most widely applied to teach basic behavioral, communication, and social skills to children with autism spectrum disorder and other developmental disorders. It may also be used to help people undergoing rehabilitation following brain injury. It uses reward-based learning techniques to impart essential life skills. ABA is also used in the treatment of some other conditions. One is Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) , to help children overcome difficulties with concentration and controlling impulsive behaviors. For people with Obsessive Compulsive Disorders, it is sometimes used to help them overcome compulsive behavior. ABA therapy is also sometimes used in cases of PTSD, to help people turn to positive behaviours when they have experiences that trigger distressing memories.

Why do people need ABA?

Children with autism and other developmental disorders need ABA therapy as a way to learn how to communicate and engage with others, improve their general ability to function and lead fulfilling lives, and diminish dangerous behaviors. The techniques used in ABA therapy are based on established principles of learning, and positive reinforcement—supplying earned rewards—is an important strategy for motivating positive behaviour change.

What happens in ABA therapy?

The first thing that happens in ABA therapy is an evaluation of the child in service of developing a treatment plan. The therapist meets with the child’s parent(s) in order to learn about the family and the child, assesses the child’s behavior and ability level, and then creates a plan tailored to the specific needs of that person. Once the treatment goals are established, the skills to be learned are broken down into small, component steps. Treatment sessions focus on learning and practicing each step, and furnishing meaningful rewards as steps are learned, behaviors are spontaneously implemented, and goals are accomplished. ABA therapists also train caregivers and families so that behavioral progress occurs beyond the clinical setting.

What problems does ABA therapy treat?

One of the primary goals of ABA therapy is to decrease the outbursts and other nonproductive behaviors of children with autism. At the same time, ABA aims to remedy language deficits and help such children learn how to communicate successfully. ABA therapy helps children learn age-appropriate social skills and gain skills, such as attention and focus, that are necessary for school.
