I often tell potential clients, “Ideally, you should be able to tell your therapist anything; if you can't, it might be time to find a new therapist". Accordingly, I believe the one of the most important factors for therapy success is to have an strong and trusting relationship with your therapist. My job is to see you clearly. If I can see you clearly, perhaps you can see yourself more clearly, and that can make all the difference. Together we will work to help you see your self clearly and compassionately; and to help alleviate the pain and anxiety getting in the way of living your best life.

With well over 20 years as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in a variety of settings, I bring warmth, experience and expertise into the therapeutic relationship. We tend to come to therapy when we want to make a change or feel conflict in our lives. How we operate no longer works. Something's missing or something feels wrong. This may manifest as anxiety, discomfort or sadness. I believe we all have the capacity to heal, to learn new ways of dealing with our past wounds and present circumstances. Often from trauma stems growth and strength.

At times things can become so overwhelming that it can create one developing unhealthy habits such as overeating, arguments in relationships, and difficulties at work. There are also cultural factures that can hinder mental health growth, and learning how to appropriately incorporate some cultural practices in therapy can be beneficial. Being a single parent, serious medical diagnosis, self-esteem, and major transitions, can also cause a lot of distress, and learning how to apply distress tolerance and using interpersonal effectiveness tools for a healthy communication can help reduce/decrease symptoms of depression and anxiety.

Your story matters! I believe one of the bravest things you can do is begin to understand your own story. Life is too short to let negative thoughts, anxiety and past experiences affect who you are today. You are not alone and I'm hopeful that together we can free you of any emotional pain, develop skills to appreciate your self worth and build healthy relationships to find meaning and purpose in life. You matter to me! Since everyone's story is unique, we will utilize different therapeutic approaches that work best for you. Some common approaches to be considered are CBT, mindfulness, strength based and empowerment.

Finding a therapist who you trust and feel heard by can be equally as challenging. But that’s where I would like to come in! I believe in building a strong, therapeutic alliance with the children and families I work with so that they feel validated, respected, and supported. My clients describe me as involved, nonjudgmental, enthusiastic, and easy to talk to.

Self-Harming Therapists

How does therapy for self-harm work?

A person may turn to self-injury so that they can distract themselves from their stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances. Therapy can address the cause of an individual’s suffering. A therapist can help a person understand why they may want to self-harm and help the person learn new methods of coping. A person may have poor emotion regulation, and treatment such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is helpful for breaking this behaviour. In addition, treatment such as dialectical behavior therapy can help a person manage their tolerance of distress.

Which therapies are best for self-harm?

Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioral, dialectical behavior, psychodynamic, and mentalisation-based therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavior therapies are common approaches for people who have painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual cope with distress, regulate emotions, and manage impulsive urges.

Does the tendency to self-harm mean the person is suicidal?

Having this urge does not mean the individual suffers from suicidal ideation. People who want to self-injure look to distract or alleviate themselves from the pain they are experiencing. People with suicidal tendencies want to end life altogether. However, this does not mean a person with the intent to self-harm will not attempt suicide.

How often and how long are therapy sessions for self-harm?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Clients may see improvement within 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, maybe, a six-month period. People, especially those with co-occurring conditions like depression and anxiety, may need to continue therapy for up to 12 to 18 months.
