Like many journeys, therapy begins with where you are now, factors in where you have been, and builds a plan for where you want to go. It is a collaborative process. You are the expert on your life and with the right supports in place, you can discover your strengths and begin the healing process. I have found a diverse therapeutic approach to be most effective in assisting my clients coping with life challenges such as depression, anxiety, relationship issues, trauma, grief, parenting and anger management. This approach utilizes my training in psychodynamic, cognitive, behavioral, solution focused and mindfulness techniques.

One of the few constants in life is change. If you are in a period of transition you may be feeling confused, anxious, or depressed, and alone with your struggles. Times of transition may include: Divorce, educational or career changes, changing stages in our children's or parent's lives, tackling addictions, issues of grief and/or loss. Transitions, while challenging and often stressful, with good professional support can be opportunities for true personal growth and transformation. I offer a compassionate, non-judgmental and confidential place for us to explore together how best to help you to feeling better.

I understand that 'alcohol and other drugs'...(cocaine, marijuana, opiates/painkillers, etc.) as well as relationships, money, food, work, technology, sex, etc. are merely dysfunctional band-aids to avoid the pain of inner woundedness. My therapeutic approach offers a deeper awareness of symptomatic addictions by providing the client with the 'space' and permission to explore the self-damage from these harmful 'toxins' and then learn the practice of thought and feeling detoxification. I can support my clients with 20+ years of relapse prevention therapy and techniques to replace the obsessive thinking with positive and self-affirming behaviors.

The beginning of personal change is knowing that a different experience is available. This is the seed of hope. The therapeutic experience is a collaboration between two individuals who both bring rich experience and knowledge into a therapeutic relationship. The situation that we find ourselves in is not our destiny. By choosing to participate in therapy, you are moving in the direction of creating the life you want to live.

I enjoy working with all people to help find what works best for you personally. I have a very down to earth approach and I'm all about identifying and using your own strengths to solve issues; fostering and building empowerment; and moving past shame and self criticism. Therapy is different for each person depending on your needs, preferences, and goals. And for each person the experience should be judgement free, safe, and understanding, which is crucial. I have been practicing through the lens of constant anti racism and anti oppression training, which I also place the utmost importance on.

I know what it is like to live in a psychological prison, trying to "stay strong" while repeating the narrative "I'm ok!". You don't have to go on this journey alone. The common thread amongst all clientele is a desire for positive change. At times one may need a helping hand to guide them on their journey in a therapeutic, environment. Seeking guidance is a courageous first step to wholeness and lasting change. Seeking therapy does not mean that you are weak or "crazy"; it means you have decided to address your concerns with non-biased professional help. It's ok to find someone to help you cope with the stressors of life!

My approach to therapy is eclectic with a strong psychodynamic base for understanding the problems that bring individuals to seek help.
I believe in creating an open, safe, non-judgmental and compassionate therapeutic environment in order to help you make the changes necessary to build the life you desire. I also believe in an equally kind and direct stylistic approach, coupled with a strong emphasis on collaboration. In order to work together, I will provide you with the tools you need to move forward in life.

Krystle is a culturally sensitive therapist who incorporates CBT, DBT, and psychodynamic therapy into her practice.
Do you have trouble navigating life’s stressors due to mental health concerns? Are you struggling with your romantic partner? Do you want to find love and connection with them again? What would it feel like if your mental health concerns were manageable instead of overwhelming? Achieving your goals can seem impossible when you struggle with PTSD, depression, or anxiety. You want help moving through these challenges to get back to building the life and relationships you want. You want a therapist who treats you like an entire human instead of a pile of insurance paperwork.

I am trained in psychodynamic therapy and may incorporate elements of IFS, CBT, narrative therapy, MI, mindfulness, and somatic techniques in our work together.
I’m Sam Mashaw, a clinical social worker committed to helping you cultivate the self-confidence and self-compassion to step into your wholeness. We live in a society that often seems designed to keep us small, keep us scared, and keep us doubting ourselves. I consider how social context–historical, present, personal, and systemic–may be influencing the stories you have about yourself, your relationships, and the possibilities for your life. The truth is this: the world needs YOU, your unique gifts, and perspective. Whatever you’re going through, I am here to help you tap into your innate strengths and wisdom to navigate your life.

Psychodynamic Therapists
Is psychodynamic therapy evidence-based?
Studies have found psychodynamic therapy to be effective in treating conditions like social anxiety, eating disorders, chronic pain, some personality disorders, and depression; indeed, some studies have found it to be just as effective as CBT or medication. What’s more, several studies have found that the benefits of psychodynamic therapy tend to endure—even grow—long after treatment has ended.
How long does psychodynamic therapy last?
Unlike CBT and other more structured forms of therapy, psychodynamic therapy tends to be open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a year or longer and to see their therapist one to three times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a client’s challenges and progress. However, brief psychodynamic therapy is available, which tends to be more goal-oriented and typically unfolds over 16 to 30 sessions.
Does psychodynamic therapy work?
Research finds that psychodynamic therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of diagnosable mental health conditions like depression or anxiety. The modality may also offer a range of benefits that are harder to measure but just as valuable—such as increased self-worth or healthier relationships. While no therapy type will work for everyone, research and anecdotal evidence suggest that psychodynamic therapy can be highly effective.
What are the limitations of psychodynamic therapy?
Some meta-analyses have concluded that there is little evidence to suggest that psychodynamic therapy can effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as PTSD, OCD, or psychosis, though it is sometimes used to do so. More broadly, the open-ended, free-association structure of psychodynamic therapy may be frustrating for clients who prefer a more structured, time-limited, or goal-oriented approach.
