Choosing a therapist feels overwhelming, the right connection can change your whole experience. Whether you’ve been in therapy before or it’s your first time, taking the steps to get started is the hardest part. Daily life can be challenging and stressful. Managing daily responsibilities, work, significant others/family/friends; on top of stress of anxiety, that sometimes comes out of no where, depression and/or relationship issues can feel impossible. Learning to balance it all seems out of reach, but it doesn't have to. I have extensive experience in helping people manage through these difficulties and more.

We make it easier than ever to access counseling. If you do not find the right counselor, it is ok to switch! Trust me, I started our group because I was annoyed that I had to speak to so many counselors before finding the right one for me.

Many of the clients we serve have tried therapy with a counselor who was not a good fit for them. We get it. Our therapists help you feel better by understanding your emotions are like a guide. Counseling with us feels as easy as speaking with a friend who can truly help guide the process.

Is your relationship in a rut? Does it seem like you're spending more time in conflict than in love? Are you having the same fight over and over again? Disconnection is incredibly painful in relationships. We all long to feel seen, heard, and understood. We want to feel close and connected, and enjoy being with our beloved. When we get caught in these negative patterns, anger and blame replace tenderness. I can help you understand the cycle, repair and reconnect so that you can enjoy a deep, loving connection with your partner.

I am trained in psychodynamic therapy and may incorporate elements of IFS, CBT, narrative therapy, MI, mindfulness, and somatic techniques in our work together.
I’m Sam Mashaw, a clinical social worker committed to helping you cultivate the self-confidence and self-compassion to step into your wholeness. We live in a society that often seems designed to keep us small, keep us scared, and keep us doubting ourselves. I consider how social context–historical, present, personal, and systemic–may be influencing the stories you have about yourself, your relationships, and the possibilities for your life. The truth is this: the world needs YOU, your unique gifts, and perspective. Whatever you’re going through, I am here to help you tap into your innate strengths and wisdom to navigate your life.

I have been practicing psychodynamic, cognitive behavioral, and couples therapy for over thirty years. I believe that all of us are attempting to better understand our emotions/actions in order to develop a stronger sense of self and to achieve more satisfying personal relationships and careers. While I have completed five years of postdoctoral training geared toward working with highly motivated, insight oriented patients, I have worked in many different communities with diverse populations and am quite comfortable with assisting men, women and children from all walks of life in achieving their personal goals for growth.

I combine psychodynamic, solution focused, cognitive behavioral (CBT), and mindfulness based therapies, tailoring my approach to each client’s unique needs and issues.
Many people come into therapy because they are suffering in some way and want to feel better. This suffering can take many forms--low self-esteem, difficulty with relationships, illness, depression, excessive worry or anxiety, coping with loss, family problems, alcohol abuse, divorce, and other important issues. I will work with you to help alleviate suffering by identifying thinking patterns or behaviors that might be involved in preventing you from moving forward and/or by assisting you in creating coping skills to deal with challenging situations.

Psychodynamic Therapists

Is psychodynamic therapy evidence-based?

Studies have found psychodynamic therapy to be effective in treating conditions like social anxiety, eating disorders, chronic pain, some personality disorders, and depression; indeed, some studies have found it to be just as effective as CBT or medication. What’s more, several studies have found that the benefits of psychodynamic therapy tend to endure—even grow—long after treatment has ended.

How long does psychodynamic therapy last?

Unlike CBT and other more structured forms of therapy, psychodynamic therapy tends to be open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a year or longer and to see their therapist one to three times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a client’s challenges and progress. However, brief psychodynamic therapy is available, which tends to be more goal-oriented and typically unfolds over 16 to 30 sessions.

Does psychodynamic therapy work?

Research finds that psychodynamic therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of diagnosable mental health conditions like depression or anxiety. The modality may also offer a range of benefits that are harder to measure but just as valuable—such as increased self-worth or healthier relationships. While no therapy type will work for everyone, research and anecdotal evidence suggest that psychodynamic therapy can be highly effective.

What are the limitations of psychodynamic therapy?

Some meta-analyses have concluded that there is little evidence to suggest that psychodynamic therapy can effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as PTSD, OCD, or psychosis, though it is sometimes used to do so. More broadly, the open-ended, free-association structure of psychodynamic therapy may be frustrating for clients who prefer a more structured, time-limited, or goal-oriented approach.
