You never know what will be waiting for you on the other side of the door. Every day his dementia seems to get worse. Yesterday he thought you were an old student of his. Today he doesn't recognize you at all. You lay in bed at night consumed with worry. You spend so much time and energy on your father that the rest of your life is being neglected. You see your family less. Work assignments are falling through the cracks. It fills you with guilt but sometimes you think about how much easier life would be if you didn't have to care for your dad.

Throughout my forty years of professional life I have worked with people who are coping with the complete range of mental health issues and diagnoses, as well as the problems of everyday life. With each individual I strive to create a supportive atmosphere in which we can work together, developing a trusting relationship that will allow us to address your concerns, your goals, your needs. I know how difficult it can be to talk about one's self, to express thoughts and feelings, but in such a non-judgmental therapeutic setting this becomes easier and leads to resolving issues great and small that even at times seem unsolvable.

My recipe for therapy starts with three primary ingredients: a safe space, proven techniques and a plan tailored to fit each individual. Talking to a complete stranger about your struggles can be nerve wracking at first. I understand how important it is to feel comfortable with your therapist. So I create a warm, accepting space, free of judgement to help support your growth.

Starting therapy takes courage, especially if it is new to you or if you have heard negative things about the topic of mental health. Often, my clients are considering therapy for the first time or they are returning to therapy after many years. It is usually when something very difficult or unexpected is happening in their life and they just do not know where to start, are feeling alone, or confused. You are taking an important step toward finding the support you need. I appreciate how uncomfortable beginning this process can be, and together we will figure it out.

All of us deserve to enjoy what life has to offer to the fullest extent possible. Many of us experience that journey as compromised by obstacles that threaten to rob us of our potential. These blockages may come from events in the present such as COVID-19, loss of a loved one or a deteriorating relationship, or they may result from earlier events that have left wounds and scars unhealed. I have been engaged in clinical work, helping people navigate difficulties, heal trauma, restore their lives to wholeness. I invite you to let me walk that journey with you

Life can be extremely stressful and complicated. As a result, we are often faced with challenges that leave us feeling emotionally depleted and unfulfilled. I believe everyone has the ability to achieve happiness and fulfillment. Conflict offers the unique opportunity to change and grow. I provide the structure and safe environment necessary to navigate the conflict which serves as a barrier to life satisfaction. I humbly serve as " a holder of hope" for those who feel hopeless and motivate clients to take the scary steps required to achieve meaningful change.

When we experience trauma it can effect all aspects of our lives, our psychological, emotional and physical well-being can all be compromised. Trauma related issues include: physical pain, anxiety, depression, sleep disturbance, anger, substance abuse, procrastination and avoidance behaviors. These issues can be present even if the trauma occurred in our pre-verbal years. Talk therapy alone even when paired with medication is often not enough to provide the true relief and healing we seek and deserve. This is why I incorporate Emotional Freedom Techniques into my practice.

Female Therapists

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
