My clients say I have a unique approach to therapy while providing a safe and nonjudgmental space for them to share, learn new skills to feel better about themselves, relate better with their partner while improving their day to day lives.
Life has stresses. How we cope, how we manage and how we use them to strive for the next best thing matters. Maybe you are anxious or feeling down. Maybe you and your partner are arguing more or feeling disconnected or maybe you’re beginning to feel the effects of being sandwiched between caregiving for your aging parents and taking care of your own family. It’s all hard. Finding new strategies to manage and getting new knowledge can be transformative. Together we will make a plan that helps you take meaningful action towards a more fulfilling life.

I am a clinical psychologist specializing in the treatment of adults as well as children, families and couples.
Hi there! I'm so happy you are here. Adulting is hard, full of uphill climbs and plot twists. As we take on the many challenges of daily life, moments of true joy can seem elusive. We may find ourselves feeling less content or fulfilled than we imagined. We begin to question past choices and doubt our decisions. We trudge along, hoping things will improve, without really enjoying the now. At all stages of life, we face challenges and transitions that may leave us feeling sad, anxious, exhausted, disillusioned, or isolated. And while this is normal, it can be hard to find a way through on your own. Fortunately, you don't have to.

My areas of interest and treatment specialties include: anxiety, depression, trauma/post-traumatic stress disorder, insomnia, chronic pain, health psychology, substance use, sexuality/identity questions, work/life balance, concerns or issues affecting one’s quality of life, and relationship issues.
I believe in helping individuals and couples gain insight and make behavioral changes to improve well-being. I believe empathy is important in the therapeutic alliance and I strive to create a safe space where the client(s) can feel comfortable in therapy and actively engage in treatment. With individuals, my approach to therapy is based in cognitive-behavioral theory, but also flexible and pragmatic, depending on the individual’s needs. With couples, I primarily utilize the Gottman Method of Couples Therapy, and provide strategies to enhance effective communication, strengthen trust, deepen intimacy and manage conflict.

I believe that behind every problem lies the powerful desire for something better. In addition to specializing couples counseling and adults, my expertise is in therapy with adolescents (14+) and families. Many of my clients are working to become free of self-defeating patterns resulting from emotional neglect in early or adolescent development. My typical client is intelligent and responsible as well as anxious and stressed, lonely, depressed or angry.

I enjoy working with clients who are struggling with life issues particularly anxiety, depression and trauma. Together, we examine areas of struggle or "stuckness" and identify new ways of being more engaged and effective in relationship with others and ourselves. Treatment modalities range from short-term brief, CBT, and problem-focused dynamic therapies to longer-term analytic work. For individuals seeking greater self-growth, I am a fully-trained and certified Jungian psychoanalyst and use dreams and active imagination to identify unconscious material that may lead an individual to a greater sense of life fulfillment and ultimately joy!

I also use the Emotionally-Focused Couples therapy model in working with couples and families.
I view therapy as a collaborative process where the client is the expert on themselves, and the therapeutic relationship is the most important factor in creating change. It is important to have a safe, empowering, and supportive environment in order to examine hurtful relationship patterns and emotional difficulties, and in turn change negative self-evaluations to better respond to life's challenges. I am genuinely interested in and committed to helping my clients gain insight and express their needs in order to engage in more healthy relationships and live the life they want.

Above all, if we decide to work together, I can assure you that I'll be invested in our developing a therapeutic relationship you can trust, feels authentic, and supports your personal growth.
Whether this is your first time considering therapy or you've had experience with it in the past, finding a therapist that feels like a good fit is paramount to making progress in therapy. Maybe you've stumbled on this page because you are struggling with depression/anxiety, are experiencing relationship conflict, or perhaps you've been recommended by someone you trust. While neither of us will know if we are a good fit until we've had a chance to meet, I would like to share a little about my work as a therapist.

Though I specialize in relationship and couple/marital/romantic concerns, I enjoy working with an array of therapeutic issues including mood and anxiety symptoms; self-esteem; trauma; substance issues; sexual issues; and/or LGBTQ identity concerns.
Our personal difficulties are often a "Catch 22," -- comfortable, familiar patterns of behavior inadvertently keep us in unhealthy/unsatisfactory circumstances or relationships. As your therapist, I aim to help you understand your current problems in the context of your unique life experiences, allowing you to develop insight into how your difficulties developed while growing in ways that get you 'unstuck.' I do this by facilitating conversations about your interpersonal relationships (past and present); early life experiences; what you are thinking and feeling (or may be preventing yourself from feeling); and how you communicate your thoughts, feelings, and needs with others.

I work with older adolescents and adults with a wide range of presenting symptoms in individual, couples and family therapy.
You are struggling. Maybe this is something you have grappled with for a long time, or maybe this is something that you have recently found yourself struggling with? Maybe this is about changes in your outside world, your internal world or both? You have already tried to address this, but it is still a problem. We will work together to identify and explore your behaviors, beliefs, feelings, and thoughts that have become problematic for you, As you gain more insight into yourself you will be better able to make more deliberate choices rather than fallback on your old ways of being, ways that probably worked well in your past.

Couples Counseling Therapists

Does couples counseling work?

Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.

When should a couple seek counseling?

Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.

How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?

The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.

How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?

The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
