I work with children, adolescents, and adults and provide play, individual, parenting, couples and family therapy. I am psychodynamically trained, but use an eclectic approach to address each client's needs. I am trained in CBT to work with traumatized or depressed children and adolescents. As a certified EMDR therapist I help clients struggling with PTSD, trauma, and attachment issues. I strongly believe in a mind-body connection, and help my clients strengthen their emotional well-being. I believe that clients who feel empowered, learn coping skills, and gain insight will achieve physical and emotional strength and wellness.

I believe that the relationship that is created by talking and really being heard by another human being is a life changing experience.
Although at times it seems like a daunting task, I believe that every individual has the potential to lead a happy and fulfilling life. Anyone who is courageous enough to begin therapy has taken the first step towards trying to achieve this. It is my belief that creating a therapeutic alliance based on emotional support and acceptance will lead you towards personal fulfillment. In a safe and supportive environment we can work together to overcome obstacles that are standing in the way of you achieving personal fulfillment.

I offer psychotherapy primarily to adults as well as couples.
You may be feeling called to move into a deeper understanding of yourself as life continues to unfold. Amidst times that may feel dark, overwhelming, or lacking vitality, anxiety and dissociation can manifest in so many ways that feel fragmenting and harmful to the self and body. We can be strongly defended against our unconscious wishes, fantasies, and unmet needs. How and why we behave, think, get stuck or feel fear, love, shame, and joy are layered with so much meaning. Together, we may find ways to build resilience, steps toward action, self-awareness, fulfilling connection, and a sense of wholeness.

My work with both individuals and couples invites learning about feeling & desire.
My concept of therapy is thinking together with someone about their experiences and their relationships in a compassionate and respectful environment. You can expect our work together to uncover what’s missing in the ways you know and understand yourself. My training is in psychoanalysis, which engages with what is not yet known in the unconscious and brings you to a deeper understanding of your felt experience. Having a witness to support putting language to your process is a powerful part of healing. “The words are purposes. The words are maps.” -Adrienne Rich

I have been a licensed clinical psychotherapist since 1993. I've worked for Catholic Charities and the Jewish Board of Family and Children's Services and started private practice in 2013. I emphasize psychodynamic psychotherapy (I studied at the Psychoanalytic Institute of California), but shape my approach to each individual client and his or her needs and goals. My work has centered on mature adults with mental, emotional or physical disorders, but I have treated clients of all ages and diagnoses. I develop an empathic connection with each client, bringing about a firm relationship and lasting change.

I provide culturally sensitive therapy for diverse identities, individuals, and couples facing anxiety, stress, and relationship challenges.
I'm a compassionate and committed queer, white, cisgender therapist dedicated to helping individuals navigate their path to better mental health and well-being. I view therapy as a collaborative and conversational journey, where your voice is valued and your experiences are acknowledged. With a background in art and music, I transitioned into psychotherapy, earning an MSEd from Hunter College. My career began at Kip Therapy, where I provided support to a diverse range of LGBTQIA+ clients. This experience has deepened my understanding of resilience and the strength people demonstrate in overcoming challenges.

As a licensed psychotherapist for over 30 years, and an experienced psychonaut (one who experiments with psychedelic medicines) the past 50 years, I am well qualified to help you (alone, or with your partner) prepare for and integrate a psychedelic experience. Couples are my specialty. As you probably understand, I cannot and do not encourage you to experiment with illegal substances. But if you are an adult who has had, or is intending to have, such an experience, and need help minimizing its risks and maximizing its benefits, I'm here to help.

When the time comes to make a change, it takes courage to ask for support. To be one who can respond to that request is a privilege. Starting in community mental health (access for all) and moving into my private practice, I have had experience working with depression, anxiety, relationship issues, and grieving with adults, children, couples, and the LGBTQ community. I specialize in working with people who have a history of trauma, big and small, and varied relational issues. I integrate my psychodynamic and relational training with long- or short-term, problem focused psychotherapeutic work as well as EMDR treatment.

What are the stories we tell ourselves, about ourselves? Where do we learn them? Therapy is a great place to start creating new stories that are more aligned with your values and desires. I believe that healing happens in the relationship and approach therapy as a creative, collaborative experience where humor, kindness, and self-expression are valued and encouraged. My areas of expertise include working with young people who have experienced trauma and family conflict, though I work with individuals of all ages to help them manage the stressors of life and achieve greater self-awareness, acceptance, and meaning.

I work with individuals, groups and couples to resolve ongoing conflicts and allow clients more freedom to live their lives as they wish and without disabling symptoms.
I am a licensed psychoanalyst with over 20 years of clinical experience and I am a certified Divorce Mediator. I received my doctorate at Columbia University and psychoanalytic training at the National Psychological Association for Psychoanalysis. I treat specific problems in the context of the whole person and believe that people have the capacity to move beyond their present limits and fears. With an eclectic background, I combine traditional with modern technique. I believe therapy must follow the client’s lead. Mutual goals need to be developed so that emotional healing and psychic growth can occur.

Couples Counseling Therapists

Does couples counseling work?

Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.

When should a couple seek counseling?

Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.

How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?

The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.

How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?

The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
