I help people who are exploring questions of sexuality, gender expression, and relationship styles to accept themselves in their beauty and strength, so they can experience loving connection in their lives. Whether you are struggling with gender expression, sexual orientation, desire for multiple partners, BDSM or kink, or other desires that are outside the mainstream, I am here to listen, to educate, to guide, and to help you integrate the parts of you that are currently closed off. I also work with trauma and grief, and provide a space for the boundaried expression and relief of old wounds.

My practice is open to individuals, couples, groups and families ages 13+ who are coping with a range of issues, including surviving and processing trauma.
After growing up in Massachusetts, a lifetime of travel opened my eyes and heart to the many ways people live and make meaning of experience. This perspective has informed the strengths-based, person-centered approach to my work as a therapist and coach. Social work has been central to my professional life long before receiving my degree. I began my career leading youth programs before moving to domestic violence advocacy work and program facilitation of women's groups. Through a narrative therapy lens, I work with clients to make meaning of their life experiences and live more closely to the values they feel are most important.

My name is Claudia Orfao-Martin, and I am a licensed independent clinical social worker. I have been treating clients for more than forty years, and I work primarily with children, adolescents, adults, and geriatric clients. I see individuals, couples and families, and I have been working virtually for more than five years. Because of the variety of clients with whom I work, I have an eclectic approach to treatment. Most importantly I focus on the use of Evidenced Based Treatment and Behavioral Interventions. Clients are individually assessed to determine the best approach to the treatment provided.

The therapeutic relationship you have with your counselor influences the success you have in therapy.
In my role as counselor, I’m guided by a desire to deeply understand who you are, how you see yourself and your place in the world, and the changes you want to make to lead a more fulfilling life. People are only able to reach a space of true healing and growth when they feel a deep-seated sense of safety. I work hard to create this by making space for intersecting identities and intentionally challenging thoughts and feelings that have historically caused clients to feel ashamed. No one should have to suffer alone. The therapy process can be an onerous and vulnerable one; it can also be transformative and joyful.

I like to always start with establishing a trusting relationship with the client and creating a safe space for us to address their challenges.
It can be challenging and scary to seek counseling and to take the first steps toward desired change. Being aware of that, Latrese is grateful and eager about the opportunity to meet people where they are and to help them get to where they want to be.

Do you think you may have ADHD or Autism? Have you struggled to assert boundaries at work, with family, & partners? Have you felt curious about exploring different pronouns and gender identity? Do you feel bad that you have a disability and don't know how to tell your friends that you can't do certain activities? You may have goals to tell your friends your preferred pronouns. Goals to get a diagnosis for your disability & curious about medication, goals to reevaluate your relationship with cannabis/alcohol. My role in the therapeutic relationship is to provide services that allow you to build upon some of the innate skills you already possess and to support you in the process that allows you to live your best life.
I believe that the first step to helping individuals is for them to acknowledge that they need help. From there, I can support them in creating goals that they want to achieve so that they can feel confident and encouraged to face life's challenges.

Couples Counseling Therapists

Does couples counseling work?

Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.

When should a couple seek counseling?

Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.

How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?

The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.

How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?

The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
