Using a therapeutic model that revolutionized relationship counseling, we'll explore what's driving disconnection, how to spot it, and how to enact change.
Are you exhausted? Are you trying to decide between calling me or calling a divorce lawyer? You desperately want things to get better, but it seems like no matter what you do relief seems impossible because the goal posts keep moving. Not only do I hear you, but as a nineteen year husband, I know the ups, downs, and hopelessly dark places marriage can leave us in. I've never met anyone who wants a divorce. What they want is for life to get easier and the pain to stop.

Feeling disconnected from your spouse? Discouraged in your marriage? I’ve been helping couples for over 30 years reconnect and repair their relationships.
A healthy marriage is somewhat like a road map...we need specific goals, skills, and encouragement to achieve our goal of being married to your Best Friend! I want to help build that "marriage map" by casting the vision of a connected relationship, providing communication skills based on research, and when "off course", how to repair effectively!

A therapist can be helpful in times of transition, or when it is time to put some deep thought into why you may be feeling stuck, in a bad relationship or depressed. Our world is a complicated place with external influences adding confusion to our choices. We may invest a great deal of time and money in many things, but we neglect our inner world. Yet our inner world affects all of our decision making. Therapy can help us discover our true, often neglected selves. I offer both psychotherapy and psychoanalysis. I am a graduate of the Dallas Psychoanalytic Center, Psychoanalytic training. I have additional training in alcoholism.

I have extensive training and experience working with individuals, couples, and families.
Starting therapy can feel daunting. Will my therapist understand me? How can I trust this stranger with my most vulnerable thoughts and feelings? Will this really help my anxiety/relationship/emotions/etc.? Is it worth it? First, you are not alone in these thoughts. Deciding to seek therapy and finding a therapist are big steps towards change that can be challenging. Second, I am here to walk alongside you through this process at your own pace. I believe that every thought and behavior makes sense in context. Therefore, I collaborate with you to explore and understand your personal context so we can successfully facilitate change.

Couples Counseling Therapists

Does couples counseling work?

Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.

When should a couple seek counseling?

Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.

How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?

The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.

How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?

The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
