Do you feel depressed, anxious, angry, or overwhelmed? Going through relationship problems? Experiencing trauma? Life is too short for that! My goal is to guide you through any obstacles you may be experiencing and get you to where you are finding meaning and purpose in your career, family, friendships, and all other areas of life.
Are you looking for someone who is real and authentic to talk to? It's rumored that therapy is typically a one-sided conversation that offers few chances for genuine interaction between the client and the counselor. That is not me! I am that counselor that will offer you a personal connection in order to facilitate growth and healing. My goal is to offer you support and guidance in whatever life situations you are experiencing.

I work with individuals experiencing chronic stress either from previous or current circumstances. Problems may relate to loss or trauma. There may be relationship or family conflict. Problems may exist in the work place or arise after retirement. A person may be having health problem or facing death. Decision-making and problem solving may be difficult. Feelings of fear, worry and even panic may exist. Depression may be setting in. Our struggles vary and change over time. Is your struggle lasting too long. Do you feel stuck and unable to move forward? Are you getting tired of the struggle? Don't ever give up

My counseling education includes training in individual, marriage/couples/family therapy, divorce mediation, and educational counseling.
This practice is NOW ACCEPTING NEW CLIENTS. Please call if you are seeking help to make changes in your life. Many people have at least one area where they would like improvement. This might include mental well-being, addiction, intimate/parent-child/friend/work relationships, school/work life, etc. Sometimes it’s easy to know what needs attention in our lives; other times we find ourselves baffled by what is going on inside ourselves. My practice is about supporting you in identifying the kind of life you want and finding the best way to achieve that life. I am progressively oriented.

For 20+ years, I have counseled individuals, couples, and families, served as youth pastor, marriage/family counselor, worked within in-patient and out-patient treatment centers, probate/drug courts, and psychiatric hospital settings.
Life can be tough, with it's many challenges, distractions, and unpredictable tragedies and disappointments. Fortunately, you don't have to face them alone. I believe that through strategic planning, new learned coping skills, and spiritual guidance, personal and relational healing is possible. I love working with couples, but believe that even one person can make a difference in the condition of a relationship as they learn better ways to communicate and deal with their own issues.

In working with adults and adolescents as singles, couples and families, we have faced the challenges of depression, anxiety, panic disorders, childhood abuse in many forms, chemical abuse and addictions, infidelity, post-traumatic stress, eating disorders, parenting and relationship issues.
Welcome! Life can be very challenging & stressful, especially in these days. It can be full of hurt, misunderstanding, betrayal and loss. But it can also be full of hope, healing, growth and joy. I believe every difficulty in our lives brings an opportunity to grow stronger and find fulfillment. Both overcoming and flourishing are possible, regardless of circumstances around us. As a professional counselor, I have walked alongside people on their journeys to healing and wholeness since 1981. I have seen the triumph and beauty in the human spirit as it heals from trauma and loss and is restored to vibrancy.

I am here to be a partner in your efforts to grow.
Life happens to all of us, but it seems to affect us differently as individuals. Anxiety, stress, grief, anger, relationships, and transitions can all challenge how we show up on a daily basis and how we experience the world. Thankfully, healing is our birthright, and the power to heal lives within.

Currently, I work with adolescents, adults, and couples who struggle with anxiety, self-esteem, grief, trauma, and unhealthy relationships.
What stops a person from growing mentally and emotionally? Could it be fear, past traumas or the uncertainty of the future? Even though growing can be challenging, the truth is that it is necessary. The questions then become, "How does one grow emotionally and mentally? Where do I start?" For anyone with these questions, counseling is an essential part of your growth. The growth begins with taking your first step by scheduling an initial session. Together, we will address the the thoughts, feelings, and beliefs that are holding you hostage. The sessions will be designed to grow you into the emotionally healthy person you want to be.

Founder of the Southwest Institute for Relationship Development, Dr.
Dr. Buckner is a recognized authority on the causes and cures of painful encounters between intimate partners. During her 30+ year history in private practice as a clinical psychologist specializing in relationship issues, she also trained relationship therapists worldwide, enjoyed media exposure (including The Oprah Winfrey Show),and authored the book "Making Real Love Happen--The New ERA of Intimacy." Simply said, she helps people develop relationships they love. This work is quite different than the stereotypic "marriage counseling." To discover the underlying issues that feed conflict and learn how to develop the behaviors that will create "love" require new learning.

I work especially with patients who need counseling for bipolar, marriage counseling, unresolved anger, grief, divorce, fear, anxiety, depression, OCD and family/relationship issues.
Problems in life can cause people to stain their future with hopelessness. I love to help people see how their present problems associate with issues from their past while we work on establishing a new future with healthy thinking processes and hope. Therapy can help you control your emotions while reacting to problems, redirect issues in relationships that have gotten off-track, establish boundaries, increase your self-esteem and focus on a positive future.

Life has a unique way of presenting opportunities for growth and change. These opportunities manifest themselves as challenges that no matter how great or small, lead to a journey on what appears to be a dimly lit road less traveled. No matter how bleak or lonely the voyage, you can find hope in knowing you are not alone. Counseling is a way to shed light on your path. With grace, we can walk this journey together. We will form a comfortable and collaborative therapeutic relationship that will promote growth, healing and will strengthen your foundation of hope.

Couples Counseling Therapists

Does couples counseling work?

Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.

When should a couple seek counseling?

Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.

How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?

The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.

How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?

The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
