I work with both individuals and couples using an attachment based, trauma informed approach.
Our childhood wounds don’t just go away. They shape the way our nervous system responds to stress, the way we seek connection, & the meaning we make of our experiences. Many people don’t even realize how much their past affects them, especially if they never suffered any horrific trauma. But let me tell you what you may notice instead. Your heart and mind races for no reason at all. You react defensively rather than responding calmly. You keep thinking about what you “should” do rather than what you NEED. You work so hard but still feel empty. It’s never enough.

I believe that every person has the capacity to experience peace in their relationships, including their relationship with themselves.
Do you ever feel like you can’t achieve peace in your mind, soul, or home, no matter how hard you try? Have you exhausted yourself trying to be better and serve others, only to be met with roadblocks, betrayal, and hurt? Whether you struggle with an overstimulated mind and body, depression, anxiety, or relational wounds…it doesn’t have to stay this way! You can experience a quiet mind and a heart full of gratitude and joy. You can have intimacy and communication in your marriage once more. You can connect with your kids and teens in ways you never thought possible.

Throughout 30+ years of practice, my specialties include: issues related to transitional life stages in childhood, late adolescence, young adulthood, new parenthood, step parenthood, menopausal changes, adoption home studies, bariatric surgery consultation, college counseling, psycho-education, collaborative divorce coaching, and relationship re-framing.
While we are increasingly more connected to others via technology, we oftentimes feel less connected in our relationships. My desire is to assist you in developing genuine and authentic relationships with others and yourself. I passionately focus on this goal within the context of our individual therapeutic relationship. I promote positive change for you and your relationships by creating a reality based and positive approach to improvement in mood, behavior, and life balance. Together we accomplish this through interpersonal discussion and support with the integration of personal mission statements and goal orientation to oneself and to others.

I work with individuals, couples/co-parents, and families. I see children in play therapy from three years old and up as well as adolescents. I work with many families going through the difficult family transition of separation/divorce/remarriage/grief. I enjoy working with couples and utilizing the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) to remind couples to acknowledge, appreciate and respect their differences. I found the MBTI to be especially beneficial to couples considering marriage or long-term commitments.

There are places inside we would rather hide from, places we may have failed or lacked courage, experienced a trauma or deep pain. You can’t go there alone. You need a place where you can work through it all. In our sessions we will build an alliance to dig deeper into who you are and find insight for new perspective and renewed strength. If you are a couple, I will help you work through the barriers that stifle your relationship.

The therapeutic relationship is most important.
For a moment, consider life as a roller coaster. When you are waiting in line, life may move slowly or you may feel stuck. Other times, you may be thrown for a scary loop and have difficulty hanging on or managing the various twists and curves. I am committed to joining you for the ride, providing a safe and nurturing environment, assisting you as you set and reach goals, and being your biggest cheerleader as you create meaningful change and positive health. I also believe in teaching and mentoring, and therefore have 2 counselors in training that are available to help too with a significant sliding fee scale rate.

As a systemic family therapist, I am uniquely prepared to work with couples and individuals.
Are you wondering when the ingredients of your life and relationships became too bland or too spicy? Are you finding yourself working with the same recipe on repeat, even though it doesn’t fulfill what you are looking for? Are you and your partner feeling pulled apart by disconnection and arguments? Do you feel misunderstood at home or work? Maybe your life has changed beyond what is familiar or comfortable and you're not sure who you are today. Perhaps what was once important to you doesn’t feel as fulfilling, but identifying the missing ingredients feels challenging or foreign.

A lot of emotional pain can be transformed when we gift ourselves with an intentional pause. Good therapy, at its core, enables us to take a deep pause and to process unresolved events and emotions in an unhurried way. When you partner with a skilled clinician, this small step can yield big emotional dividends. Welcome! I am a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker licensed in SC and CA. I have had the privilege to empower individuals and couples for over 30 years in an "emotional time-out".

I enjoy seeing a variety of age ranges and working with individuals and couples as they struggle with interpersonal relational conflict.
“No one ever told me that grief felt so like fear. I am not afraid, but the sensation is like being afraid." C.S. Lewis, A Grief Observed. Many people spend most of their lives with unprocessed grief which may inhibit and hide parts of themselves from finding joy and healing. I desire to see a variety of age ranges and to work with individuals and couples as they struggle with trauma, interpersonal relational conflict, grief/loss, and life transitions.

Couples Counseling Therapists

Does couples counseling work?

Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.

When should a couple seek counseling?

Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.

How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?

The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.

How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?

The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
