I see therapy as a partnership where we co-create a space that fosters healing, exploration, and growth. In this space, we will work together to help you gain a better understanding of your relationship to yourself and to others. My approach will be tailored to your specific needs through various modalities. These may include: considering how early life experiences have shaped who you are today, understanding how to bring awareness and attention to various emotional experiences, or learning how to examine and hold the many different parts of ourselves that make us who we are.

Establishing a warm, trusting, nurturing, supportive and non-judgmental relationship has been a hallmark of my 30+ years of experience as a helping professional.
Life experiences can bring pain and conflict resulting in depression, anxiety and coping with substances. I frequently hear the expression of loneliness, emptiness and feeling unfulfilled in people's lives and the sadness, disappointment and anger over relationships with themselves, partners, family and friends that fail to satisfy those needs. Experience has taught me that feeling heard and understood generates a sense of hope and stimulates movement toward insight through exploration and examination of one's inner life. Psychodynamic psychotherapy offers the framework and space for this work, leading to corrective emotional experiences and a more satisfying life and relationships.

I work with a range of issues including mood disorders: relationship issues, parenting as well as with people who have experienced trauma in one form or another.
As a clinical psychologist my goal is to help clients find ways to help themselves be happier and more satisfied with their lives. People usually come to therapy because they are suffering in some way: perhaps anxious or depressed or they have trouble finding or sustaining meaningful relationships. The goal of treatment is to begin to talk openly and honestly about the obstacles in ones life and to think about how to move forward. I will work toward putting you in charge of your own well being, but I will also work carefully to ensure you are safe and well cared for: this will be a collaborative effort.

Children/adolescents: Childhood can be a challenging time and, because children lack the experience and internal resources that adults have, they often express themselves through their behaviors. As a parent it can be hard to understand your child's behaviors or how to address them. In my practice I create a warm, fun, and safe environment and work to establish a trusting relationship so that we can explore your child’s thoughts and feelings. I work collaboratively with parents to help them gain insights into their child's behaviors and how to effectively meet their child’s needs.

For over 20 years, I have been working with diverse individuals and couples in therapy.
Individuals and couples who see me for therapy are typically dealing with anxiety, depression, relationship issues, a low sense of self-worth, grief, and/or trauma. They are struggling to take risks with vulnerability, to process loss, set boundaries, understand the power of no, discern safe spaces, and build trust. Many of my patients are challenged by the stories their anxiety tells them, negative self-talk, sadness that makes it difficult to effectively process their thoughts and feelings, and previous traumatic experiences or vicarious exposure to trauma.

Working for two decades with individuals and couples has continually shown me the value of therapy, and I have abundant respect for the courage it takes to seek help. I integrate relational, mindfulness, EFT, IFS and other talk therapy perspectives and, when it feels right for my clients, EMDR and Somatic Experiencing. These latter two modalities address trauma as well as many other areas of life. A certified EMDR consultant, I facilitate trainings and provide individual/group supervision for fellow therapists working with EMDR.

Couples Counseling Therapists
Does couples counseling work?
Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.
When should a couple seek counseling?
Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.
How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?
The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.
How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?
The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
