I enjoy working with youth and adults, and am also experienced in providing couples counseling.
I am licensed clinical social worker who has worked in a variety of mental health settings for the past 15 years, and am currently licensed in Texas, Missouri and Kansas. While I have been trained to use a multitude of treatment approaches, including Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), and Mindfulness, I believe that one of the most important tools is the relationship between the client and therapist.

I am passionate about helping individuals, couples, families, and anyone looking to connect with themselves or others.
Are you an individual that struggles to explore their emotions and come to terms with past trauma, current fears, and broken relationships? Are you a couple or and family that needs help facilitating the creation of secure lasting bonds and reinforcing any preexisting positive bonds? Are you an individual that needs a non-judgement safe place to process and heal from the stress of life, or wants to grow mentally, emotionally and spiritually?

This means that through the therapeutic relationship, we slow down and give space for the body, mind and heart to process through distressing experiences locked in the nervous system and allow you to receive what you needed then, now.
I believe we are created for relationship where we are not only seen, heard, and known, but also loved, cherished, and healed. I accompany women at many different life stages who are experiencing trauma, grief, life transitions or are interested in deeper personal exploration and healing. You were not created to carry it all alone. I walk alongside others because I believe Jesus wants to meet you right where you are at, just as you are: “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest." Matthew 11:28

I work with women, men, and couples who are dealing with communication, stress, work-life balance.
Do you find yourself being pulled in two different places at once? Staying at work to finish a project, going to your children's games or taking care of your elderly parents? Trying to decide whether to stay at a job you have been at for 25 to 30 years or to look for something less demanding? Life is hard, challenging, sometimes unfair. I want to listen to your story.

We all experience challenges in life that leave us with baggage, causing us to question why we are a certain way. Maybe you are ready to address the issues that are holding you back in relationships or at work. In my therapeutic relationships, I provide compassion, support and a bit of humor so clients can feel comfortable being exactly who they are and grow to authentically thrive. My clinical approach utilizes interventions from ACT and Internal Family Systems. I also use techniques from the Gottman Method for couples with tangible tools to strengthen relationships, manage conflict, and cultivate shared dreams.

) to work with individuals, and couples.
Every day you go through life with a smile on your face hoping that you can simply keep it together. In passing, people ask how you are doing, and you give the standard answer: “I’m fine. Thank you”, but deep down you wonder if anyone will ever see past the smile, and past that standard answer. You think to yourself, “Will anyone ever see the pain that I am carrying? Does anyone see Me? Does anyone even care!?”

How do you know you've reached the point to call? You may be suffering in your relationship; arguments and fighting may be occurring, and misunderstanding may persist night after night, or weekend after weekend.
Relationships are the most important aspect of our lives; how we live, love and communicate with one another. Over the past 50 years, Modern Psychoanalysis has developed new techniques and strategies to deal with even the most troublesome aspects of romantic relationships, and explore new approaches to emotional communication and personal growth. My practice specializes in working with Couples, and I have nearly a decade's clinical experience with a wide range of problems. Feel free to consult my website (see link above/left) for further information about couples counseling and my practice.

Couples & Marriage Therapy, using EFT, & Premarital Counseling.
Hi there! I'm Kirsten Tretbar. My passion is helping neurodivergent, highly intelligent, gifted people. What's yours? I taught acting and film in LA for years, so I love working with kids, teens, and their families in creative ways! Together, we can and will help your wonderful child feel better. I'm trained in EMDR, a state-of-the art technique for anyone (all ages) with serious anxiety, depression, and PTSD. For couples therapy, EFT is a really effective technique I find men especially like. This model encourages couples to fairly explore attachment styles, to figure out how to communicate more effectively and with love.

Couples Counseling Therapists

Does couples counseling work?

Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.

When should a couple seek counseling?

Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.

How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?

The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.

How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?

The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
