I currently work with adults, couples, and families. I see therapy as one approach for an intentional practice of self and relational awareness. If you are feeling limited by your own beliefs, expectations or blurry boundaries with others, and/or constructs and constraints imposed by our systems, I want to help empower you to be curious about your potential and purpose in your own life and in the world around you. I like metaphors, so I'll use one now. I see therapy as a bass line, something that maintains a consistent and reliable beat in the background while you improvise, play, and experiment in the foreground.

I feel that psychotherapy is most effective when it is collaborative, flexible, and grounded in what is important to you. While I have training in a number of modalities, I am always learning from you. In light of that, I will meet you where you are and make space to explore new ways of being and understanding. People who have worked with me appreciate my patience, warmth, and attentiveness.

My goal is to empower individuals by helping them tap into their inner strengths and resilience. As a first-generation immigrant and a non-binary individual, I understand the complexities faced by people with multiple identities, which fuels my commitment to creating a safe and affirming space for healing and growth. I incorporate a decolonized approach that acknowledges and challenges the harmful impacts of colonization on individuals' mental well-being. By centering the experiences and perspectives of marginalized communities, I aim to promote healing and empowerment.

Why therapy? Why assessment? In both, my approach identifies barriers and builds bridges to success. Therapy may address personal issues (e.g., anxiety/depression/OCD, sleep problems, living one's values) or supporting a family member with neuropsychological issues (brain injury, Alzheimer's, seizures, ADHD, LD). Assessment may help answer: Why is my child struggling in school? How does their neurological history affect daily performance? Is my child gifted? What kind of accommodations can we get for ADHD/learning disabilities/autism? I had a diagnosis as a kid, what does that mean for me now? Visit:www.elizabethjerisonterryphd.com

Through my clinical/personal experience, I've learned how life transitions, intricate relationships, and unresolved trauma can trigger a range of internal and external reactions that stray from our core values. I firmly believe that when our nervous system responds to traumatic events, the resulting adaptive energy sometimes remains within the body, creating dysfunctional patterns that perpetuate emotional, somatic, and psychological distress, ultimately leaving us feeling stuck and isolated. We can work together to reestablish your emotional and physical well-being, laying the foundation for healthy relationships.

As a therapist, joining you on your path to growth and healing is a privilege. Life can be tough, and sometimes it's hard to cope with major changes or ongoing struggles. Recognizing negative thought patterns and beliefs affecting behavior is challenging without guidance. I'm here to offer support, especially for children, young adults, couples, and individuals struggling with depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, trauma, academic and job-related stress, relationship problems, and life transitions.

Cognitive Processing (CPT) Therapists

How does cognitive processing therapy work?

A CPT therapist helps a client evaluate their thoughts about the trauma they experienced, focusing on maladaptive or self-blaming thoughts that can exacerbate symptoms of PTSD, anxiety, or depression. The therapist will work with a client to help them learn to challenge such thoughts and consider different perspectives. The therapist is also likely to ask a client to work on these techniques at home between meetings, such as writing an account of their trauma that can be read aloud during a future session.

What is cognitive processing therapy for PTSD?

Cognitive processing therapy (CPT) is a form of cognitive-behavioral therapy primarily used in the treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) to treat individuals who experienced abuse or violence, who survived natural disasters, who were first responders to such incidents, or who otherwise experienced trauma.

How long does cognitive processing therapy last?

CPT is a short-term therapy. Whether conducted one-on-one or in a group, a complete set of CPT sessions typically includes 12 weekly sessions, along with tasks for clients to complete at home, although this can vary depending on a client’s needs or a therapist’s particular treatment plan. Sessions typically last 60 or 90 minutes.

How effective is cognitive processing therapy?

A large body of research supports the use of CPT to treat people experiencing PTSD, finding it to be effective among different age groups, either in one-on-one therapy sessions or in a group therapy environment. Research suggests that although the initial sessions may be difficult, clients tend to begin to feel positive progress after the first few sessions, and that the benefits tend to last well after the therapy ends.
