I’m Mackenzie, and I’m so glad you’ve found your way here. I work with both couples and individuals in person in Grand County, CO, as well as virtually for Colorado residents. Research shows that the relationship between therapist and client/s is what fosters the deepest change, and I truly believe it is the most powerful tool in the room. I am passionate in creating a non-judgemental space for processing, challenging, and growth. I tend to pull methods from IFS (parts work), Exposure & Response Prevention (OCD), emotionally focused, and attachment based theories.

I use Internal Family Systems therapy to help you recognize the parts that keeps you stuck and help you develop the awareness you need to break free from these patterns that no longer work for you.
Not every day is bad, but you're tired - tired of feeling stuck in the same recurring patterns and not knowing the way out. Sometimes, you feel anxious and worried "for no reason." You find yourself feeling obligated to say yes when you really mean no. You feel like you have to change yourself to fit in with the people around you or else you won't be accepted. The roller coaster of emotions becomes so overwhelming the only way to relax is through scrolling, substances, or Netflix, but you feel worse later. You worry there is something wrong with you but hope that there is relief from your anxiety and pain.

Thank you for considering me as your provider! I am both a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), and a Certified Addiction Counselor (CACII) in the state of Colorado. I have facilitated over 10,000 therapy sessions (with about half being group format). Over the course of that time (19+ years), I have learned that it is at the crossroads of vulnerability and acceptance where the deepest levels of healing and transformation occur, and my primary responsibility is to provide the necessary safety, acceptance, and understanding. As such, I offer a no-risk initial session for all self-pay clients: you do not pay if we don't continue.

I practice almost exclusively from a framework known as Internal Family Systems or IFS.
I'm aware things suck right now, otherwise you wouldn't be here looking for a therapist. Wading through 1000 profiles of counselors waxing on about themselves isn't helping much. So, I'm here to simplify things. The most important part of successful therapy is having a strong connection with your counselor. This generally means you share a similar vibe or interests. I like dad jokes. I dig art and all things creative. I collect tattoos. I love house music and was a club DJ in my younger days. I understand stress/anxiety (I'm also an attorney), divorce (been there, done that, got the t-shirts), parenting and existential angst.

During sessions I draw heavily from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Internal Family Systems, and Cognitive Processing Therapy.
I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker that specializes in anxiety, depression, and trauma (PTSD). What we focus on will depend on your priorities, for example, work stress, life transitions, or communicating in your relationship, although I tend to think of my work as "working myself out of a job," with the expectation that you will get to the point where you won't need to see me anymore. I'm strongly influenced by mindfulness, stoicism, trauma-informed, and person-centered approaches.

Some modalities I use center around curiosity, and self-compassion and include; attachment theory, client-centered, solution-focused, CBT, A&C, and Internal Family Systems.
We hear it all the time, we are wired for connection. It's true, we need relationships and connection to get us through our toughest challenges. If you're feeling lost or disconnected therapy can help you find some relief. I believe the relationship we build as therapist and client will act as a catalyst for the change you desire. I’ll act as a guide as you become an expert on the themes in your life that keep you feeling stuck.

EMDR and IFS are our foundational therapeutic approaches and our style is relational, direct, and compassionate.
We are passionate about helping the healers in this world and are only accepting therapists as new clients. As therapists we have a tendency to put others first, but in doing so, we can sometimes neglect our relationship with ourselves. As healers, our own health is our biggest asset. Let us be your advocate and show you a kinder, gentler way to treat the most important person in your life. We strongly believe that we become amazing therapists once we tap into the wisdom of our own lived experiences and know the humbling experience of being a client. We believe that the most important and effective therapeutic intervention is you.

Internal Family Systems (IFS) Therapists

What is Internal Family Systems therapy?

Internal Family Systems (IFS) is a type of talk therapy that focuses on sub-personalities, or “families,” within a person, which may be made up of wounded parts and unpleasant emotions like anger and shame. These sub-personalities can come into conflict with each other and with an individual’s core Self, leaving the person feeling detached from positive traits such as the “8 C’s” of confidence, calmness, creativity, clarity, curiosity, courage, compassion, and connectedness. By healing a patient’s wounded parts, a therapist aims to restore balance and bring on positive change.

How does Internal Family Systems therapy work?

An IFS therapist will work with a patient to identify their particular sub-personalities, recognize the emotions powering them, and release them. By doing so, the patient should become more able to address any underlying problems their sub-personalities may have been trying to protect them from. Ultimately, a patient discovers ways to manage internal and external conflicts on their own, through techniques such as relaxation exercises, journaling, and making charts depicting the relationships between their core Self and their distinct parts.

Does Internal Family Systems therapy work?

IFS therapy has been shown to help people address conditions such as depression, anxiety, panic, fears and phobias, trauma, and substance use disorders. Some research has also found that it can help individuals deal with symptoms of physical health conditions like rheumatoid arthritis, such as pain, everyday functioning, depressive feelings, and low self-compassion. There are some conditions for which IFS treatment, specifically discussions of one’s “parts,” may be less appropriate, such as schizophrenia or other states that involve psychosis or paranoia.

How long does Internal Family Systems therapy take?

As with most forms of talk therapy, there is no set duration or end point for IFS therapy. After becoming comfortable with a therapist and the core concepts of IFS, some patients quickly make progress. While experiences vary, most will find that it is a relatively longer-term therapy, involving months and sometimes years of sessions.
