I use an attachment and trauma-informed lens and use IFS, Emotion Focused Therapy, DBT, Gottman Method, and mind-body approaches.
Is your trauma making it difficult for you to feel stable in your life and relationships? Do you and your partner trigger each other's wounds and feel that it isn't safe to talk about difficult topics as they come up? Perhaps you know communication is difficult in your relationship but you still haven't uncovered the root issues. Trauma shatters us at the core of our being. It can feel so painful to watch the pain that someone inflicted on us destroy the things that matter most to us in life. Your pain doesn't have to rob you of joy and connection. It takes courage to heal, and I am here to support you through this healing process.

Therapy works best when personal stories are heard, and individuals and families construct their own meaning. I bring experience working with a broad range of clients from childhood through the lifespan; specializing in complex trauma and helping people navigate transitions like caregiving, relationship changes and family coping and medical complexities that stress family systems.

Hola and welcome! I am Karina Olivas, Owner of Vida Marriage and Family Therapy, Pllc. I would like to acknowledge what a big step it is to be seeking a therapist, and say I have been there! In reality, the memories can weigh you down with fear, anxiety, and even depression. What if you could share your secrets with someone who listens to understand? Someone who validates your feelings and experiences without judgment? Brené Brown says the antidote to shame is empathy. Sharing your secrets can be incredibly healing. I am drawn to working with individuals, couples, and families from a holistic and systemic view, as there are a multitude of considerations and complexities to take into account with each client’s distinctive story. From experience with many different treatment modalities, I use a combination of theories depending on the needs and goals of the client. Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT), Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), and Internal Family Systems (IFS) are at the forefront of my practices, as I believe in the importance of the need for secure attachment, safety, belonging and connection.

In our sessions, you'll find an open, creative and collaborative environment. I'm here to make space for each unique story, and to support you in finding your way through whatever challenges you're facing. I hope we can think outside the box, approaching your difficulties with creativity and courage to work towards healing.

I can imagine this part of the process can be quite intimidating. In fact, the road leading up to this moment could have been riddled with obstacles and barriers. Whether those obstacles are fear of what others may think, past upsets from previous set-backs, or not knowing where to turn, You can get the help you deserve. Individuals that I serve are individuals who are at different walks of life that wouldn't mind having an objective view to help them navigate through the nuances of life.

Gottman Method Therapists

How does the Gottman method work?

One of the core doctrines of the Gottman method is that negative emotions hurt relationships about five times more than positive emotions help them. Thus, couples require five times more positive interactions than negative interactions with each other. The therapist will guide clients on how to improve communication and understanding of each other to manage conflict and have their emotional needs met. The therapist will also advise couples on how to repair relations with each other when conflict arises, and therefore avoid lasting damage.

Is the Gottman method evidence-based?

Yes, this method is an evidence-based approach to couples therapy. The method is based on more than 40 years of research by Drs. John and Julie Gottman, the psychologists who developed the method. The Gottmans analyzed decades of data to draw conclusions about what types of interactions are likely to lead to specific results, and which interventions are most likely to lead to success. Studies have found that this approach leads to improvements in relationship satisfaction, intimacy, communication skills, and a lower rate of divorce.

How long does the Gottman method take?

The duration of treatment depends on the specific challenges clients face. Sessions are typically 60 to 90 minutes long, and an average course of treatment is around 10 sessions. In some cases, such as for couples dealing with a critical problem, the therapist will suggest an intensive course of treatment, with daily sessions over the first two to four days. Treatment is complete when the couple is satisfied and has met the goals they’ve set, and when the therapist believes they have the skills to continue on their own.

Is the Gottman method effective?

Through the Gottman method, couples can achieve changes that are real and sustainable. This treatment has been used for more than 40 years; the method is supported by empirical research, including randomized controlled trials that have demonstrated effectiveness in improving relationship outcomes for couples. Like any talk therapy, success or failure depends in large part on how committed the clients are to making positive changes and working toward results.
