I am a Colorado-based, licensed doctoral level clinical psychologist passionate about treating depression and anxiety, especially in those struggling with belonging and identity. As a neurodivergent individual, I specialize in working with ADHD and autism clients, as well as supporting “LGBTQ+” folk, parents and individuals who are coping with medical issues. Despite our differences we all share the challenge of living authentically and being able to thrive in a society that was not designed with our wiring in mind.

Are you feeling disconnected from yourself or your relationship? I can help! I enjoy working with and empowering adolescents, couples, and the elderly to overcome obstacles and process through trauma that impacts growth. I also use qEEG Neurofeedback to address the struggles associated with ADHD, PTSD, anxiety, depression, autism, and behavioral issues in children and adults. Neurofeedback is a non-invasive treatment modality and changes are noticed faster than with a pharmacological approach.

As a neurodivergent person, moving through a world built for neurotypical people can be an overwhelming and disempowering experience. When social pressure or trauma leads you to mask who you really are, it can lead to depression, anxiety, stress, and/or a sense of not inhabiting or controlling your own body. Sometimes, the more you try to fit in, the more alienated you become from yourself and those around you.

5 years of specialty training, and have worked with individuals who have autism spectrum disorder or other neurodevelopmental disorders regularly since 2009.
I have come to believe that while each person is dealt a certain set of cards in life, we have choice in how to play them. Understanding the cards we are dealt can provide great relief. However, this understanding alone is often not enough for growth. A good therapist can serve as a mirror, allowing us to see ourselves from different angles and consider things about our thoughts, feelings and behaviors that we may have just reacted to in the past. Seeing ourselves in new ways allows us more choice; creating more helpful behaviors, reducing emotional strain and changing difficult relationships.

I provide therapy and coaching for neurologically diverse adults and teens who may at times feel challenged, confused or exhausted by the social world. I enjoy helping clients to interpret the 'invisible' rules of social relationships, and to problem-solve practical challenges they may face at home, work, or school. I use EMDR therapy frequently for improving self-regulation, and for processing trauma or other past experiences that may be interfering with clients' daily life. I also provide consultation to parents and caregivers of individuals who are working on social cognition issues.

Life is messy. People get stuck, or wounded or overwhelmed by changes they don't want or understand and aren't "handling." And sometimes speak or act in unhelpful ways. Sometimes those ways become addictions and they hurt themselves, or the people they love and feel worse. And things don't get better. Time alone isn't enough. Let's do something about it.

When is enough enough? Life is a constant process of managing work, family, friendships, partnerships, parenting, a household; the list never ends. Every year you might think it's going to be better, less stress, more fun; and then it's back to the same draining routines. If you feel tired of wishing things in your life were different and finding yourself stuck in patterns and relationships that don't feel good, something has to change. Starting now might feel like too much, but, we know that perfect time isn't coming any time soon. All or something is always better than all or nothing.

Do you and your partner suffer from communication problems? Did one of you have an affair and you are wondering if you can rebuild your relationship? Do you long for the days when you felt loved by your partner instead of lonely and in pain? Relationship stress takes a huge toll on your daily life. It can make it impossible to function at work, parent your kids and just get through your day. Studies show that a toxic relationship can even negatively impact your physical health. If any of these difficulties sound familiar, you are not alone. We all need to feel safe with our partner in order to be our best selves in relationship.

Autism Therapists

What is the most effective treatment for autism?

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) has come to be considered the standard treatment for children with autism spectrum disorder, and research has confirmed its effectiveness for many children. Therapists trained in ABA techniques work with children (and their parents) on developing social skills, communication and learning abilities, and everyday habits of hygiene and grooming. The clinician will tailor their program to the child’s particular need but the overarching goal will be to help them advance as far as possible toward independence based on their level of symptoms and decrease the need for additional special services. Families should seek a mental health professional specifically trained in ABA, and holding special certification in the technique, who has extensive experience not only with the approach but in using it with children with the same level of symptoms as the child who needs care.

How does ABA work?

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) sessions, which typically focus on positive reinforcement, can be intensive, lasting two or more hours several times a week, and continuing for two years or more. Therapists can also be expected to ask parents to take an active role in reinforcing lessons. Research has found that the technique can lead to major improvements that decrease the need for additional special services.

How does treatment for autism work?

Therapy sessions based on Applied Behavior Analysis will likely be frequent, intensive, and highly structured. After a thorough assessment, a therapist will help a child understand and develop skills in a range of areas, including communication, motor skills, social skills, self-care, play, and academic skills, as well as routines of daily living like hygiene. Typically, the therapist will help a child break down the components of a behavior—often referred to as the antecedent (what prompts an action), the behavior, and the consequence(what immediately follows)—and then reward the child at every step, while also asking parents to reinforce the lessons, and the rewards, throughout the day. This core therapy may be supplemented by occupational or speech therapy, and antidepressants, antipsychotics, and anticonvulsants may be prescribed to address specific severe symptoms.

How long does therapy for autism take?

Some people with autism spectrum disorder may be engaged in some level of therapy for many years, but research shows that treatment will be most effective if it is begun early and delivered intensively. When therapy begins by age 3, children tend to be better able to grasp and adopt the skills needed to manage everyday life, including attending school and establishing social relationships. This type of early-intervention treatment regimen is highly structured, typically involving 20 to 40 hours of one-on-one therapy per week, along with additional hours of engagement managed by parents, for a period of two years or more, although the duration of treatment is dependent on the child’s level of symptoms and pace of progress.
