I love the dynamic, creative, organic and untidy nature of this work. I am inspired by those who, show up, hang their mask at the door, and enter with authenticity and strength. It is an honor to be allowed into this space with someone, and I consider myself lucky to be invited. I am passionate and committed to my work as an Expressive Arts Therapist and Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC). I use a holistic and integrative approach that encompasses mind, body and spirit.

I am most effective helping people overcome barriers to healthy relationships and finding the care, closeness, and satisfaction available in life. The happiest people almost always site their intimate relationships as the most meaningful and gratifying part of life. I can help you improve your capacity for and the quality of these relationships -- starting with your relationship to yourself. A therapeutic relationship is a great place to learn and talk frankly about how relationships work!

I specialize in couple's therapy using the most current techniques in relationship counseling. I believe that many issues couples face, issues that often lead to relationship breakup, are normal, understandable and treatable through therapy. After years as a therapist, I have found a method for couples counseling, EFT(Emotionally Focused Therapy), that systematically addresses deep relationship issues and empowers profound and lasting change. I have been married for 40 years, have four children, value family as a stable base and would not be where I am today without the support of professional marriage counseling. I believe in it!

On the outside, you look super successful, likely the poster child for how things “ought to be”. You went to a good school, have a rewarding career and maybe got married and had some amazing kids. You have done what you expected would make you FEEL accomplished, grateful, and happy. Except that you don’t. Lately, coloring inside the lines isn’t giving you the same ‘HIT’ it used to. Instead, you are wondering “Whose rules are these anyway and why do I need to keep following them?” The gap between what is expected and how you truly feel inside keeps growing wider. You're tired- and feeling alone, disillusioned, and conned.

When life presents challenges that are too difficult to overcome on your own, I offer a safe, non-judgmental space to explore and express your emotions. Working together, you and I will reveal your existing strengths and develop them into viable coping skills to overcome these challenges. I have personal experience, as a parent and a daughter, in dealing with the challenges of physical and mental disabilities. Are you struggling with self-confidence? Do you second-guess and shrink yourself in relationships? Find yourself upset "for no reason" often? You’re a hard worker, you use your logic, but still question your worth, feeling disconnected and powerless. Maybe you’re struggling with grief and loss, or coping with the chaos of a past or recent trauma. It’s all overwhelming, and you’re ready for things to get better. You’re ready to find the clarity you know is there. I want to help you get there.

Just because you feel you can carry your trauma and pain alone, doesn't mean you have to. I gently and somatically help my clients understand patterns of behaviors and beliefs, which have kept them locked in lives and relationships they do not find satisfying or fulfilling. EMDR attachment focused therapy is my primary approach to working with clients. Many people want to change their patterns, but can't move beyond them to healthier ways of being in their lives, their relationships, and in their bodies. I work with clients to find their strengths, resources, and insights as we explore both their present lives and past experiences.

I became a Licensed Professional Counselor after over 35 years as a healthcare professional. I wanted to understand the mind-body reciprocal interactions and the power of the unconscious mind. If mental and/or physical suffering has left you feeling isolated, betrayed, and exhausted you may believe there is no way out. If you feel stuck at every turn, you are in paradox. Being in paradox is an indication that you are facing a profound opportunity to become your authentic self. If you are willing to take the deep journey into you, I am not afraid. I have seen the blackest black imaginable. There is a way out.

Female Therapists

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
