Here in the Peak to Peak mountain community, we value self-reliance. We chop our own wood and forage for our own mushrooms. We count the miles we’ve hiked, not the miles on our cars. We live and breathe by the land and weather that surrounds us. When our head needs clearing we call a trusted friend or set out alone to ski, camp, knit, hike, read, fish, chop, quilt, or climb. But sometimes this isn’t enough. We find our woodsheds full, our bookshelves exhausted, and our friends too busy to climb with us. This is the moment to contact Peak to Peak Counseling.

From the outside, you’ve got it “together", but it's hard to let people know the real you-even though you want to connect. Maybe you’ve had a major loss or an overwhelming event - a death, divorce, job loss, a personal violation, etc. At times it's impossible to face. Distractions used to work, but life feels out of control and you’re exhausted. Worries hijack your focus and ability to relax and even sleep. You move from being on edge to feeling numb and checked out. Life is a roller coaster and you want to feel balance. You're your own worst critic. You'd never talk to others the way you talk to yourself.

I work with clients who want to stop feeling controlled by symptoms of anxiety, trauma, and depression. I have worked with survivors of multiple traumas including sexual assault, child abuse, interpersonal violence, war trauma, and torture. I also work with postpartum women who want to feel like themselves again. I help men and women heal from the effects of limiting cultural ideas about who they should be based on their gender. I also help people get rid of chronic pain using cutting edge therapy techniques, and I often incorporate walking sessions into therapy to deepen integration of what is discussed during session.

Counseling is a journey and admitting that you need help is one of the hardest and most rewarding things you will do. This is an active journey that we will take together. Often we feel that activity and movement will help us to feel better, but underneath that unrest is a range of psychological processes such as depression, overwhelming stress, perfectionism, and anxiety. Choosing to ignore your issues tends to make life more difficult and places a strain on your relationships. Through our counseling relationship we will create goals, set the pace and find your path of healing.

It didn’t come as a shock. Your grandmother was elderly and had been sick for some time. But the news of her death hit you like a ton of bricks. You’re not sure why it’s affecting you so much. You can’t stop crying, and it’s hard to concentrate. You’re falling behind at work, and you worry that your partner will get sick of your dark mood. You thought you'd done a lot of work on becoming more resilient and learning how to cope, but now it feels like you've lost those gains somehow. Nothing you try makes a difference, and you’re embarrassed to be struggling so much. It feels overwhelming, frustrating, and isolating.

The desire to be connected to others is innate, and yet we sometimes find ourselves alone, hopeless, sad, scared, and angry. I believe that being connected to ourselves and others is part of the human experience, and recovery from symptoms that interrupt our ability to live our lives to the fullest is possible. I have over 20 years of experience working with individuals who struggle with issues related to depression, anxiety, trauma and addiction. I believe change and insight are possible, and freedom from pain and suffering is attainable.

I work with individuals and couples offering existential therapy to help you to live more fully and find new ways to face your predicaments, paradoxes and conflicts. Together we can explore your life and relationships to discover ways in which you can live more authentically, in alignment with your values. I trained and worked in England before moving to Boulder in 2010. I have over 20 years experience as a therapist; I bring that with me as I meet each new individual or couple. I will help you describe, clarify and unravel your relationship to the world, your self and other people. We do not have to start with your childhood.

Female Therapists
Does it matter what gender my therapist is?
In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.
Should I see a female therapist?
Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.
Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?
Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.
How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?
It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
