Being trained in systemic therapy as well as Gott man methods, we will maintain our bond as we apply new techniques that we know are supported through research.
I specialize in relationship issues, both individual and couple. Whether you are experiencing change through a major life transition, stressor, or traumatic event, your decision to seek therapy is admirable. Often times we fall into patterns individually and relationally that feels drowning and scary. It takes courage to seek therapy. Together, we will form a bond and build a relationship where you feel safe, confident, and proud. Then, we will conceptualize the problem, connect the dots, and get to action based work. If you are ready, I will motivate. I immerse myself in the process, ensuring quality care throughout.

I believe issues in our lives arise from a lack of connection to others and to the internal parts within ourselves. Once we strengthen these connections and resolve inner conflict, we are able to reach a state of feeling more integrated and authentic. I see individuals who want to overcome trauma, anxiety, stress, anger, depression, mental distress, self-esteem, career challenges, relationship issues, grief/loss, and life/role changes.

As children, play is how we live our lives, interact with our environment, communicate our thoughts, feelings, and passions. Often times the stresses of life, relationships, job pressures, traumas, and losses make us forget how to play, how to explore, and seek growth. Wherever you find yourself today, I would be honored to help YOU find YOUR way back to your playful spirit. One that encourages you to grow, explore, and understand yourself. Gently pushing you to be the best you, you can be. So that you can overcome obstacles that are in your way, conquer hills you are seeking to climb, and relationships you are hoping to create.

You're at an age that you thought would have at least some of your dreams come together, instead you're settling for almost getting there. Stuck, trapped, one step forward but two steps back are the feelings you try to push away or ignore. Usually in unhelpful ways. This isn't the the person your younger self thought you would be. The good news is you know you're not done working towards the future you that feels fulfilled.

My approach is engaging and is client centered. I do not just sit back and wait for you to tell me how you feel. I want you to develop the understanding and motivation you need to take better care of yourself and be more effective in the world. It is not up to me to tell you how to live your life. Sometimes you need to deal with a difficult situation; sometimes you need to make a change in your life. Whether your issues are situational or chronic, I would like to be given the opportunity to help.

My favorite clients to work with are males ages 12 & up, couples, and groups in conflict. For people who are motivated to grow but feel stuck, I've learned the collaborative process of breakthrough can be fun and exciting! Many of my clients have been Christians, finding they preferred to work through important issues with someone who understands and shares their values. However, your faith can play as much or as little of a role as you would like it to during our time together! My clients tend to value a laid-back yet straightforward style, finding courage to pursue curiosity and adventure instead of fear.

Many people are used to getting discouragement as encouragement, especially from themselves, but that is going to change!.
The majority of clients come to therapy with a problem that’s somehow rooted in relationships, past or present. People's trauma doesn’t usually come from a car accident or natural disaster—somewhere along the line it comes from relationships, either with some other person or group of people. My ideal clients believe their life is not where they want it to be, even if they don’t necessarily know how or why. The things that my ideal clients believe about their experience are what cause misperceptions about who they are and what they’re worth—which keep them from really truly connecting to other people.

Male Therapists

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
