I offer both counseling and Art Therapy using a variety of evidence-based treatment modalities, including cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavioral therapy, and acceptance and commitment therapy.
I strongly believe that YOU are the expert on yourself. That being said, at times it is helpful to have a trained professional to support you in exploring places you may feel stuck in life, unhelpful patterns, and strategies for growing and moving forward.

I specialize in utilizing creative interventions and approaches that are tailored to each of my clients, such as art, music and experiential activities alongside traditional talk therapy.
I work with children and adults. My goal is to create a space where those I work with are not labeling themselves or seeing themselves as "broken" or "the problem," or for them to feel powerless in their circumstances and behavior patterns. Instead of asking what you did wrong, we should be asking what you have done right to make it this far. How have you survived? That is no small feat and it should be celebrated! I believe that we become the stories we tell ourselves. Once we stop telling the story of how much it hurt, and instead begin to the tell the story of our strengths and how we survived, then we can fully heal.

Harmony Arts Counseling is an art therapy practice for people of all ages interested in using art to help understand and express their emotions. This process is often both intuitive and fun for all ages, but especially children, as they naturally tend to be more creative. Another one of my specialties includes children, adults, and caregivers dealing with medical conditions or events. Being both a nurse and an art therapist, helping people cope emotionally with a physical ailment is my passion (In-home services available for bed bound or home bound clients).

My primary way of providing support is through Art Therapy.
I love working alongside adults and teens who are ready to explore what is going on underneath their symptoms. Clients I support seek therapy for help with anxiety, depression, self-harm, and/or suicidal ideation among other difficult things. Often (though not always), clients are part of the LGBTQ+ community and are interested in figuring out how their experience of gender identity and/or sexuality fits into their mental health and lives. First, we get to know you better while we find ways to cope with symptoms. When you’re ready, we take a deep dive together into what’s causing life to feel hard, unmanageable, or even unlivable.

I feel strongly that the individual story matters. It shapes our lens, which impacts our experiences, our choices and our actions. Sometimes that lens can get skewed, and things can feel overwhelming or out of whack. I like to be a co-pilot to the client and provide a safe space to allow the client to explore and examine things they may want to change, with the ability to provide them with tools/skills when necessary. Therapies:art-music-play- sand tray, CBT.
My ideal client wishes to get help, recognizes that I can’t “fix anyone”, and is willing to take the time to work on themselves with the tools I can provide to them. I don’t want to be their expert but rather their guide down the path of self discovery with their understanding that I don’t judge my clients, nor do I have any expectations of them other than their desire to help themselves. This model is only for my adolescent to adult clients. Kids rarely think they need help. I’ve always imagined that I’m on the planet to help people who are marginalized, like victims of trauma, special needs kids, women and our frail elderly.

Art Therapy

How does art therapy work?

The process of making art allows people to express themselves. Art-making can take many forms, such as painting, collage, or sculpting. The therapist asks questions that the work elicits, such as how the person felt while creating their piece, or if any memories surfaced that they can discuss. The therapist will then work with the patient to process their experience, understand themselves better, and work toward change.

Does art therapy help with trauma?

Art therapy can be a valuable treatment option for those suffering from trauma. Traumatic experiences such as combat, rape, or childhood abuse can be so painful that articulating them can be too scary or painful; creating art allows people to express themselves without words, and tell their story in a different way. The physical nature of creating art can also help people feel rooted in the body, which may benefit those who feel disconnected from their body in the aftermath of trauma.

How long does art therapy last?

The duration of art therapy varies, but a common length for treatment is 10 to 15 weekly sessions. Some people may see improvement in just a few weeks, while others may choose to remain in therapy longer term. Patients should periodically discuss their goals with their therapist to make sure the two are aligned on process and progress.

What are the limitations of art therapy?

Art therapy is helpful for many people, but a limitation is that it doesn’t have as robust an evidence base as other forms of therapy, such as cognitive behavioral therapy or acceptance and commitment therapy. The evidence on art therapy is mixed; some research demonstrates its benefits, while other research suggests that it has little impact on patients.
