I would be honored to serve as a spelunking guide and enter into the depths of your pain with you so that you may have a therapeutic comrade, learn the skills to navigate the dark caves of suffering, heal your most wounded parts, and discover not only what in life is worth living for but also how to keep going when it feels like there's no way out.
One’s mental health journey is like spelunking- the exploration of caves. Sometimes we find ourselves in the dark depths of suffering, be it through trauma, shame, depression, grief, or just this whole being alive thing. Healing our psychological pain is like finding our way out of the caves. It can be a beautiful, rewarding journey, but it can often lead us to feel lost, scared, and hopeless. Finding our way back to the light is possible, and so often, it is within the journey itself that we find our way out of the darkness. It can be difficult to navigate the depths alone, and I fiercely believe as humans, we're not meant to.

"I have not met a more wholehearted counselor than Dr. Horowitz in 40 years of working with so many," wrote author Stephen Levine. Your courageous reach for help is the first, hardest step. I have been through a number of disasters, incl. 2 large fires, 1 earthquake, deaths & my sister's psych hospitalization, & that's helping me to help folks adjust to CVIDS-19. Whether you are suffering from anxiety, depression, anger, grief, or pain, you can be helped via research-based tools. We'll first revisit your positive attributes: your accomplishments, talents, & passions are fuel for growth & change. We humans can re-learn, thankfully.

I partner with clients facing systemic barriers like economic challenges, educational disparities, and issues related to race, gender, and sexuality. I also support those with chronic illness/ pain, guiding them toward acceptance and commitment in their journeys. I understand how ongoing stress and trauma can lead to anxiety, depression, and physical discomfort. My approach is informed by liberatory training and my own experiences as a trauma survivor, allowing me to empathize with those seeking lasting relief. A key focus of my work is helping clients safely reconnect with their bodies and explore trauma through the nervous system.

Home is supposed to be a safe place. But for you it isn’t. Or wasn’t when you were a kid and impact your sense of security today. Domestic violence, sexual assault, alcohol use, drug abuse, neglect, and severe mental illness surrounded you, leaving you feeling hypervigilant, on edge, and afraid of when the other shoe is going to drop. No matter how much success you’ve created for yourself, you feel like you’re always running away from a dark legacy that is just a few steps behind you. And that might actually be true, if you set up your life as an adult in ways that continue to hurt you.

The experience of pain and anxiety can often cause feelings of isolation and fear, but you don't have to go through it alone.
I specialize in helping people through difficult times, whether due to a life transition, or to challenging circumstances. It is in these times that we feel most afraid, lost, and unsure of the way forward. It is all too common that we cope with adversity by being hard on ourselves, withdrawing in shame, or disconnecting from what nourishes us. I will help you find the tools and skills within yourself to move forward and create a life in which you feel more connected to yourself and to others.

Being with pain in small increments expands our capacity to give space for what’s needed in ourselves, and in our environment.
I work with adults of all backgrounds and identities, with an emphasis on mindfulness and the healing power of the therapeutic relationship. I welcome people struggling with anxiety, depression, excessive worry, relationship issues, in spiritual crisis, or simply weighed down by the general heaviness of existence. I view therapy as an explorative process into the self, a journey that client and therapist traverse together. I place emphasis on the therapeutic relationship, using it as a lens by which to learn about how we exist in relationship with, and to others.

Chronic Pain Therapists
How does chronic pain therapy work?
Engaging with a psychotherapist to help treat chronic pain does not mean that one’s pain is all in their head. Therapy for chronic-pain patients has been shown to benefit both the mind and the body, targeting physical symptoms and increasing daily functioning. In other words, for many, addressing their emotional health through therapy affects their physical health. A therapist can help a client challenge unhelpful thoughts about pain and develop new ways to respond to it, such as distraction or calming breathing techniques. Studies have found that therapy can be as effective as surgery for certain cases of chronic pain and many doctors recommend trying psychotherapy in advance of considering invasive surgery.
What are the most effective treatment options for chronic pain?
Stress, anxiety, depression, catastrophizing, ruminating, lack of activity, and social withdrawal all make chronic pain worse. Addressing these issues, research shows, can help people gain control over their pain symptoms. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy, biofeedback, and mindfulness-based stress reduction, along with greater pain-management education, have been found to help people reduce fear and disability.
Are there new treatments for chronic pain?
Many cases of chronic pain, particularly those involving back pain, remain medically unexplained. But there is evidence that changes in the brain or nervous system are caused by previous physical ailments such as tissue damage; in such cases, the brain may continue to send out pain signals despite the physical cause having healed. To aid patients under these circumstances, a recently developed treatment known as pain reprocessing therapy (PRT) is designed to help the brain “unlearn” this response. A PRT practitioner helps individuals to reduce the “threat value” of their ongoing pain signals until they can reappraise them as less threatening and fear-inducing. They also help an individual to develop new emotional regulation skills.
How long does therapy for chronic pain take?
There is no set timeline for recovery from chronic pain, especially as there may be a range of physical and psychological causes for any individual’s discomfort, but most patients should expect to see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 sessions. Studies of pain reprocessing therapy found that many individuals’ experience of pain lessened in eight sessions over four weeks.
