My name is Audra Perez and much of my experience as a LCSW has been spent working with people living with a variety of life changing medical conditions, grief/ loss, combat veterans and caregivers. Often, our time is spent developing coping techniques to help deal with the mental/emotional impact of their diagnosis, loss, trauma, etc. In general, improving quality of life and relationships, reducing depression/anxiety/stress levels, boundary setting, increasing self-awareness/confidence are common areas of focus.

My area of emphasis is grief and loss - although I work with all populations to include: parenting, childhood and adolescent issues, school performance, couples and family issues, as well as, life coaching.
What do you want your life to stand for? What holds you back? What thoughts, memories or experiences are gripping you like a weight and pulling you down or keeping you from doing the things that matter most in this life? Whether you are a child or an adult, each of these questions has meaning. As living, breathing and feeling human beings we go through this "Life" journey encountering and experiencing many glimpses of happiness, as well as, tastes of struggle. These experiences in our "Life" journey are shared from childhood to old age.

Much of my work focuses on grief and loss which encompasses a multitude of changes in our lives and world.
I'm glad you're here. Reaching out to talk with someone when you feel overwhelmed and stressed out takes a great deal of courage. I know how hard it can be to keep going when unexpected challenges turn into deep disappointments and heartache, leaving you feeling lost and disconnected from yourself, others, and the life you thought you’d be living. I provide compassionate listening, use creative and evidence-based methods, seek to truly understand and support your values, and teach tools you can use in your daily life to feel better - even in the midst of great emotional pain.

I am a licensed professional counselor and art therapist with over 19 years of experience including grief counseling, adult and pediatric end of life counseling, family therapy, and trauma based counseling.
The decision to seek therapy in times of turmoil is courageous and wise. Often we spend so much time caring for others and giving of ourselves, that we forget to attend to our own needs - emotionally, physically, and spiritually. At times a heartbreaking loss, illness, divorce, or other event is the catalyst for turning our attention inward. Other times the cause may be a need to gain better interpersonal skills, learn ways to reduce anxiety or trauma symptoms, or simply a desire to know ourselves better. Whatever reason has brought you to this place, I am here to help you.

I have worked with many different issues including loss, identity, sexual & domestic abuse, adoption, depression, anxiety, relationships and transitions.
I work with individuals and couples offering existential therapy to help you to live more fully and find new ways to face your predicaments, paradoxes and conflicts. Together we can explore your life and relationships to discover ways in which you can live more authentically, in alignment with your values. I trained and worked in England before moving to Boulder in 2010. I have over 20 years experience as a therapist; I bring that with me as I meet each new individual or couple. I will help you describe, clarify and unravel your relationship to the world, your self and other people. We do not have to start with your childhood.

For the last 30 years, I have been working on life transitions, trauma, grief, and relationships.
I combine Buddhist psychology with positive psychology to help clients understand how patterns of thinking are creating continued suffering. With a little guidance, thought patterns can shift and allow us to stop reacting to life and begin choosing. I believe that we need to look into the past but not re-traumatize ourselves by reliving those memories. I value the connection between myself and my client as the primary trusting tool as we work toward awareness and safety. This therapeutic alliance is the key to creating a life of peace.

One of the things I love to help my clients through is when they are going through moments of transition in life, whether it is retirement, joining the work force, empty nest feelings, going through grief of a loss of loved one, or working with a client who has received a jarring medical diagnosis.
I am an LPCC (Licensed Professional Counselor Credentialing) in the State of Colorado.  My goal for providing counseling is to help my clients through some of life's most difficult times.  Working together and exploring these hardships allows for the client to be able to cultivate and find some of life's most meaningful connections. Having trained in both somatic therapy and EMDR, I help move my clients through some of the most difficult traumas or bereavement as they journey to a greater understanding of self by fostering a more profound connection with the body, mind and spirit.  I enjoy working with a wide range of ages.

Grief Therapists

How long does therapy take for grief?

There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.

When should you seek therapy for grief?

Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.

Can grief be managed without therapy?

Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.

What happens if grief is left untreated?

Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
