What will you do with your one Wild and precious Life? (- Mary Oliver.) We work with clients who want to find themselves again. Maybe it's depression, trauma, or life changes. Maybe it's less specific, like being lonely or not being able to manage your stress - we can help you reconnect your head and your heart. We believe in the healing power of nature and experience, and use both in a way that will help you heal and finally find yourself again

Clients seek counseling with me for struggles that they are experiencing with depression, anxiety, anger, relationships and transition periods in their lives. I provide them with specific skills and techniques to manage their distress more effectively. My treatment is solution-focused, short-term in nature, and many clients return to me intermittently for times that they get stuck in old and unproductive patterns.

Life is hard. Sometimes it's really hard. No one listens. No one cares. Maybe you can't sleep because your are anxious, or you can't stop crying because you feel depressed. Maybe your relationship isn't working out for you. Maybe you just want to talk things over and be listened to. It has been my pleasure and my choice to be the person at the end of that tunnel for decades now. You don't have to figure out everything all alone.

I am an individual therapist and have worked with adults with dual-diagnosis, eating disorders, anxiety, depression, personality disorders, and relationship concerns.
Are you feeling stuck? Or perhaps anxiety, fear, other emotions, or memories are preventing you from being your true self? Asking for help can feel intimidating, and at the same time everyone needs help at some point in their life. I am glad you are starting this process. I am here to work together with you on your concerns, issues, or perhaps the much needed space of a listening ear. I find it can be difficult to vocalize our emotions, share our story, or be our true selves due to many underlying emotions.

I specialize in Depression, anxiety, disordered eating, and stress management.
Stop beating yourself up! We all engage in some unhealthy behaviors at times and we don't need to feel ashamed of these struggles. Maybe we cope with stress by having an unhealthy relationship with food (binging, purging, restricting) or by engaging in self-destructive patterns in an attempt to deal with our extreme feelings. I can help you process your past traumas and allow you to create a new path for yourself based on self-compassion. The world doesn't have to be a scary, lonely place.

I have had the pleasure of working with adults, young-adults, adolescents, first responders, active military duty, veterans, individuals who have experienced sexual assault, depression, anxiety, relational conflicts, and substance use struggles with a particular focus on PTSD and trauma.
I believe the therapeutic process can be enlightening, challenging, at times uncomfortable, but ultimately transformative and healing. My hope for the relationship we co-create in this process as therapist and client is that you feel affirmed, cared for, safe, and valued. Through a holistic perspective that integrates the mind, body, and spirit, I aim to empower my clients to identify and realign with their values in order to achieve their goals and express their most authentic selves.

Depression Therapists

What is the goal of therapy for depression?

Therapy for depression has several major goals. One is to relieve the mental pain of depression, which distorts feeling and thinking so that sufferers cannot see beyond their current state of mind or envision feeling better. Another is to give people the mental tools to recognize and correct the kinds of distorted thinking that turn a problem into a catastrophe and lead to despair. Therapy also teaches people how to process negative emotions in constructive ways, so they have more control over their own emotional reactivity. And it helps people regain the ability to see themselves positively, the motivation to do things, and the capacity for pleasure.

What happens in therapy for depression?

Perhaps most important, no matter the type of therapy, patients form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Patients learn to identify and to challenge their own erroneous beliefs and thoughts that amplify the effects of negative experiences. They learn to identify situations in which they are especially vulnerable. And they learn new patterns of thinking and behaving. They may be given “homework” assignments in which they practice their developing skills. In addition, good therapists regularly monitor patients to assess whether and how much the condition is improving.

What therapy types help with depression?

Several types of short-term therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) helps clients challenge their negative thoughts and beliefs, learn new behavioral strategies, and curb reactivity to distressing situations. Behavioral activation (BA) is a form of therapy often used in conjunction with CBT; it focuses on engagement in rewarding activity as a pathway to changing negative feelings and disturbed mood. Another widely used approach is interpersonal therapy (IPT), which targets the social difficulties that both give rise to and get exacerbated by depression. Therapists may combine approaches as needed.

Can therapy for depression be done online?

Studies have found that online therapy can be highly effective for treating depression, although it may be more challenging to build a good therapist-patient alliance on screen than in person—at least at first. However, online therapy can offer considerable advantages. Accessibility and convenience are tops among them. Some people actually find it easier to talk about problems online than in person. While online therapy typically limits visibility of facial expression and body gestures that give important nonverbal cues to a patient’s state of mind, it can give therapists a glimpse into a patient’s world and life, providing information that can be highly useful in guiding therapy.

How effective is therapy for depression?

Many studies show that therapy is highly effective provided that patients complete the prescribed course of therapy, commonly 16 to 20 sessions. Over the long term, it is more effective than medication and the effects are more enduring. As a result, psychotherapy has the power not just to relieve current suffering but to prevent future episodes of the disorder. Therapy reverses the dysfunction in neural circuitry that disposes individuals to a negative view of themselves, the world, and their future and they acquire coping techniques, problem-solving skills, and understanding of their own vulnerabilities that are useful over the course of a lifetime.
