I help clients that are struggling with addiction, trauma and symptoms of trauma, relationship issues, men's issues, anxiety, depression, and self-esteem. There can be a variety of reasons to make a change and that change can only happen when we recognize that we want to improve our life. Generally people that are successful in accomplishing their goals are motivated to participate in the process and tend to view therapy as a supportive piece of that journey. There are no quick solutions to making a change, but if you choose to work with me, you will begin to see your life transform and I will be beside you along the way.

I specialize in bipolar, mood disorders, substance misuse and addiction, relationship issues (boundaries and communication), identity, and personal growth.
You are doing the right thing by reaching out, its courageous! You have likely been doing the best you can - but it feels like nothing is working. At times we need a fresh perspective to help us through. A non involved person to vent to, discuss the things we've been feeling, and navigate the discomfort. Counseling is a powerful next step. Together we will find what your looking for.

I am trained in substance abuse issues and Energy Psychology (tapping).
Do you have a difficult childhood? Unfortunately, our childhood decisions are put on automatic and affect our current daily life. I teach practical skills, such as tapping, emotional skills and communication that can be used for the rest of your life. Alchemical Hypnotherapy is used to rescue the child that was you from your past. Then, the adult is empowered to set boundaries and focus on attaining personal goals. Energy Psychology (Thought Field Therapy) is useful to defuse patterns and trauma and as a daily tool. My desire is to promote independence in the people I work with. I have a large toolbox to give clients to use.

In addition to my training and experience with complex substance use cases, I enjoy working with clients who are experiencing chronic pain, chronic illnesses, anxiety, depression, Bipolar Disorder, and perinatal mood and anxiety disorders.
I'm a warm and caring therapist who knows the value of humor, and I bring that into my work to help balance and cope with the more difficult parts of life. I'm trained in harm reduction, a collaborative approach between client and therapist that incorporates the belief that abstinence is one solution to drug and alcohol misuse but not the only solution. I also have experience with moderation management for alcohol use.

My specialties involve using an integrated approach focused on trauma, addiction, identity concerns and life transitions.
Welcome! Thanks for taking the time to look at my profile. I have to be honest, I don’t like writing these “therapist bios” because it is so difficult to accurately describe the therapeutic process and it often sounds cheesy but here goes my best attempt. I have over 10 years of experience providing individual counseling services to college students, young adults and members of the LGBTQ+ communities including specialized training in providing services for a variety of concerns including trauma and addiction. My approach is flexible, person centered and I am adaptable to the needs of each individual I work with.

Maybe you’re here because you are looking for something for yourself or someone else. It can take a lot of courage to start counseling for the first time or start with a new counselor. I believe connecting with your counselor is one of the most important parts of successful therapy. I currently work with people who are struggling with some part of their lives and use a substance to help them cope or even just to feel normal. I also have a special space for those who have suffered loss or are experiencing grief.

In my practice I work primarily with addiction, trauma, Complex PTSD, and grief.
“There are two extremes to avoid: being completely absorbed in your pain and being distracted by so many things that you stay far away from the wound you want to heal.” This quote by Henri Nouwen describes the middle ground I aim to help people find in therapy. Maybe you feel like you are constantly treading water—drowning in your anxiety, anger, or shame. Or maybe you have habits, addictions, or unwanted behaviors that take the edge off or help you numb out for a while. A lot of people find themselves, like a pendulum, swaying back and forth between these extremes. Sound familiar?

Some important work I do is with families who suffer from addiction.
When working with clients, I utilize a client-centered, collaborative approach. I focus on meaning, encouragement, and support to help my clients obtain awareness, understanding, and acceptance of themselves. I approach the counseling relationship from a perspective of "meaning making" which suggests that people act on what they believe about situations, not the situation itself. Together, we use that knowledge as a basis to explore, assess, illuminate, unravel, and move forward through obstacles towards a goal-oriented outcome.

Depression, anxiety, trauma, addiction.
Do you feel like you're drowning and can't find your way back up? Do you find yourself worried all the time, unable to sleep, and hopeless? I've been there too... Everything feels like it's changing so fast and you don't have a place to process it. You find yourself needing that glass of wine or two (or the bottle) at night just to help you feel "okay" long enough to get to sleep and start all over the next day. You know you need to talk to someone, and you are overwhelmed with getting started. It feels like with the right tools and a little bit of help, you could feel so much better.

As a Certified Sex Addiction Therapist (CSAT), I have a heart for working with adults seeking recovery from sex and porn addiction. Notably, porn addiction has accelerated over the last 20 years because of the Internet. Typically, sex and porn addicts also experience compulsivity regarding drug and alcohol use. Fundamentally, people use sex or drugs to medicate against anxiety and depression resulting from traumas.

Addiction Therapists

What is the best therapy for addiction?

Addiction treatment will be tailored to the individual. People seeking help for addiction—whether with a psychotherapist, in an outpatient clinic, or in a residential program—should expect to engage in multiple types of treatments, sometimes including medication. For anyone recovering from addiction, avoiding situations in which one has typically used a substance is essential, as is the support of close connections. Since substance use disorders tend to co-occur with underlying mental health conditions such as anxiety or depression, those must also be addressed as part of any recovery plan.

How long does therapy for addiction take?

There is no set timeline for recovery from addiction. Patients and their families should expect the work to last several months, if not longer. Residential treatment programs may be based on a stay of 30, 60, or 90 days, with continuing work after release, but only about 1 percent of people are treated in such facilities. Ceasing use is just the first step; therapy to help maintain abstinence and effect behavior change must follow. The process of recovery, neuroscience has shown, involves brain cells recovering the capacity to respond to natural sources of reward and restore control over the impulse to use. Another definition of recovery is restoring voluntary control over one’s substance use and retaking all of one’s previous responsibilities.

How effective is drug addiction treatment?

Substance use disorders are treatable and remission is achievable for many who seek recovery; by some estimates, more than three-quarters of people who become addicted to alcohol or drugs recover. But that success rarely occurs quickly or on a set timeline; relapse is not only common, but many therapists and clinicians view it as a normal part of the process—not always a sign that a person has returned to addiction, but a signal that their treatment should be adjusted to help them regain control. Overall, research suggests, five years after the end of substance use, one’s risk of relapse is no greater than that of others who had not faced addiction. Other experts believe that complete abstinence is not the only measure of recovery, and that, through effective treatment, many people can learn to control their use.

How can you get addiction treatment for someone?

The most important factor in recovery from addiction is widely understood to be an individual’s commitment to change. For that reason,“interventions” in which friends and family gather to urge or force someone to begin immediate treatment often backfire; even when such efforts do lead someone to begin treatment, they may be less likely to stay than those who are self-driven. Still, family members can play an important role in supporting an individual who seeks help and can take part in family therapy as one element of a loved one’s treatment.
