You are welcome here. It takes great courage to embark upon a healing journey and since you're reading this, you already know that the most intimidating step is oftentimes the first one. We begin this journey where you are, there is no "supposed to" in how your inner world looks or what is expected of you - wherever you are, that's a brilliant place to start. Perhaps you haven't experienced genuinely safe space or been consistently held in unconditional positive regard, and to that I say again: You are welcome here!

My name is Joy and I have been in the mental health field since 2015. My first professional experiences were with grief counseling and restorative justice intervention. These experiences showed me the power of connection and I am committed to using our relationship to help you reach your goals. I use a combination of techniques from humanistic, neuroscience-based, attachment theory, and solution focused to help you explore relationships, emotions, identity, and purpose. The first step in effective tinkering is to look at all the parts, because all parts are valuable.

I have training in DBT, CBT, Brief Solution Focused Therapy, Trauma and Attachment, Transgender Issues, and certifications in addictions counseling.
The desire to be connected to others is innate, and yet we sometimes find ourselves alone, hopeless, sad, scared, and angry. I believe that being connected to ourselves and others is part of the human experience, and recovery from symptoms that interrupt our ability to live our lives to the fullest is possible. I have over 20 years of experience working with individuals who struggle with issues related to depression, anxiety, trauma and addiction. I believe change and insight are possible, and freedom from pain and suffering is attainable.

I am currently accepting clients ages 3-10 AND 20-65 who deal with depression and anxiety. I creatively support gender and racially diverse clients, including students, mamas, papas, children, and adults making life transitions. I love working in nature with art, stories, and metaphors. My clients often deal with grief, lack of confidence, anxiety, depression, perfectionism, and boundaries. In therapy, we take these wounds and uncover their “Golden Shadow.”

Does this sound like you: “Even though I’ve worked towards change, I keep finding myself back in similar experiences and relationships. I'm tired of this knot in my stomach with the thoughts that don't stop, Although I can usually figure things out on my own, that isn't working this time. Sometimes I worry that maybe there's something wrong with me. I see some patterns in myself and over the years I’ve gained tools that help, but they don’t seem to reach the underlying issues. I want to take advantage of my clarity to make lasting changes; I know that I could feel more alive, connected and joyful."

Transgender Therapists

As a gender-diverse individual, why might I want to see a therapist who is also gender diverse?

A trans or gender-diverse client may want to see a therapist who is also trans or gender diverse because the client may feel safer sharing their experiences and more confident that the therapist will understand, validate, and support them. But trans or gender-diverse clients can also benefit from therapy with cisgender therapists; this is a personal decision based on the connection between the client and the therapist, and if that connection is strong, therapy will be successful.

What if I cannot find a therapist who shares my gender identity?

Therapy can still be effective if a therapist does not share a client’s gender identity; a large body of research indicates that the most important factor in successful therapy is the therapeutic alliance. A therapist can also be interviewed for sensitivity and competence on gender identity and expression to ensure they possess appropriate knowledge and skills. Many therapists have excellent training and extensive experience working with gender-diverse clients, and that expertise can be invaluable despite a therapist not sharing the same firsthand experiences.

How can I recognize a good therapist for working with gender-diverse clients?

An experienced therapist should be able to help clients explore their gender identity and expression, alleviate discomfort related to their gender identity, treat mental health challenges and trauma, address existing relationships and communication with family members and loved ones, and determine the next steps pertaining to nonmedical or medical gender-affirming interventions. To recognize a good therapist, clients can ask about these topics and explore their comfort and connection with the clinician.

How might I inquire about a therapist’s experience working with transgender clients?

Clients should feel comfortable asking therapists directly about their experience working with transgender or gender-diverse clientele. For example, clients may ask about the therapist’s training and education with regard to gender identity, how many trans clients they’ve worked with in the past, and what sorts of matters were discussed. You may wish to inquire how a therapist specifically supports the needs of transgender clients or clients questioning their gender identity. A good clinician who is nonetheless not the right fit for you is often happy to make referrals to others based on the concerns you articulate in a preliminary conversation.
