Whether you're facing infertility, pregnancy/ postpartum challenges, an eating disorder or complicated trauma, I am here to help you create a story that fits your individual life.
If you were given space to share the story of your body, how would it begin? What would that story say about love and loss, about eating and movement, about pain or trauma? Our lived experiences impact our ability to feel at home within ourselves and you may be there today. Maybe you’re feeling disconnected from yourself and others. Or you’re struggling to nourish and move your body in compassionate ways. Maybe your experiences have taught you that to connect to your internal experience would be dangerous or unsafe. Your ability to be in your body and use your voice may feel complicated, problematic, or even nonexistent.

Events in life, whether it is experiencing mental health challenges, relationship complexities or a life transition rarely occur without stress. Adjusting to change takes time and patience and while this can be painful, change can influence personal growth and can leave one stronger, more confident and better prepared for what comes next in life. Sometimes it takes a neutral and objective person to facilitate and guide one through challenging seasons of life. Amanda Wurst, LCSW is the owner and operator of Solace Counseling, comprised of 7 therapists, each bringing different areas of speciality.

I work with children, adolescents, families, and young adults on a range of issues, including depression, anxiety, behavioral problems, child sexual abuse, trauma related issues, issues related to adulting, divorce and adoption, as well as transitional challenges. I have been practicing since 1992, although I took some time off to raise our four children. I utilize play therapy techniques when working with children, as play is a powerful and therapeutic language for children. Generally, I approach treatment with sincerity, compassion and even humor to promote growth in a synergetic, trusting manner.

Parents I work with have experiences that might include premature births and NICCU stays, medical challenges for parent/baby, birth trauma/fear, loss over not experiencing the birth that was planned, stillbirth, perinatal/ postpartum depression, discrimination due to sexual orientation or gender expression, or grief from losing the little one you carried.
My passion is supporting parents who have experienced difficult births. Bringing another life into this world is an important and challenging experience. Whether you are the individual who gave birth or a witness, there can be immediate and/or lasting waves of physical and emotional difficulties that may effect your life. These paths are unique to each of us because every birth is important and impactful. My work is to listen and journey with you as you explore your birth story and the impacts it has had on your life. Although this is an area of focus, I work with adolescents and adults needing support in other areas of life.

Pregnancy, Prenatal, Postpartum Therapists
What are the most effective ways to address pregnancy, prenatal, and postpartum concerns?
The most effective way to address pregnancy, prenatal, and postpartum concerns is by finding a therapist who has prior experience helping other patients overcome the challenge being faced. For example, a marriage and family therapist may have experience helping couples adjust to their new relationship dynamic. An anxiety specialist may have experience helping with phobias or illness anxiety related to the child’s health. A depression specialist may have experience treating postpartum depression.
When should I seek treatment for prenatal or postpartum concerns?
Pregnancy and the postpartum period involve intense physical and mental changes; a degree of upset and instability is normal. However, if these changes impair daily functioning, it may be time to seek help. This distinction is pertinent for postpartum depression: A period of teariness, irritability, and distress is difficult but normal in the one to two weeks after childbirth (sometimes called the “baby blues.”) But if feelings of sadness and hopelessness persist beyond that period, the person should seek treatment.
How do I manage worries during pregnancy or the postnatal period?
A therapist can help patients develop the tools they need to manage anxieties during or after pregnancy. Cognitive behavioral therapy can help people identify and reframe harmful patterns of thought, and change their behaviors. Other techniques and skills can allow people to develop acceptance, psychological flexibility, self-compassion, communication skills, and more.
Are there specific medications for postpartum depression?
In 2019, the FDA approved the first medication designed to treat postpartum depression. The medication is called brexanolone and is delivered intravenously by a medical professional over the course of a few days. However, typical antidepressants, which are more accessible, can also treat postpartum depression. The disorder is often best treated through a combination of medication and therapy.
