I am a certified EMDR therapist- to help clients with chronic pain and trauma.
These are difficult times. It's hard to find a place where you are seen and important! You matter. Your thoughts and perspectives are valuable. In thinking about your needs and your way of viewing the world, we will work together to define and clarify a path for your future. This new path will be a constant part of how we approach therapy together. By focusing on your needs and values we can find ways to heal your heart and mind with a sense of hope and health. I look forward to hearing from you and learning about your concerns as well as assisting you to make life fulfilling and meaningful.

Have you ever felt like you are not enough or unprocessed grief is keeping you stuck? Do you feel like life is overwhelming? Has a past trauma or loss kept you from living life fully? I believe that these unresolved thoughts, feelings, and emotions can play into less helpful coping skills. Through growth and development you will experience a fuller life and your feelings will start to be manageable. You will imagine going through life with a clear sense of self and purpose. As Carl Rogers said "The curious paradox is when I accept myself just as I am, then I can change".

When difficulties arise in life, it can be hard to navigate without support. Whether you are dealing with stress, life transitions, past trauma, or improving your mental health, choosing to start therapy can be a great step towards finding your way. It is my hope that in our sessions we can build a therapeutic relationship founded on trust, acceptance, and respect. Once this has been established, clients can safely explore life experiences, beliefs, and fears that contribute to negative emotions and sensations that interfere with day-to-day functioning and life satisfaction.

Home is supposed to be a safe place. But for you it isn’t. Or wasn’t when you were a kid and impact your sense of security today. Domestic violence, sexual assault, alcohol use, drug abuse, neglect, and severe mental illness surrounded you, leaving you feeling hypervigilant, on edge, and afraid of when the other shoe is going to drop. No matter how much success you’ve created for yourself, you feel like you’re always running away from a dark legacy that is just a few steps behind you. And that might actually be true, if you set up your life as an adult in ways that continue to hurt you.

A particular area of focus for me is supporting people who are going through life changing illness and pain management.
As a hypnotherapist I work mostly with clients who want to change unwanted behaviors like quitting smoking and losing weight. Presently, I have trained in a program called Virtual Gastric Band which is using the mind to help constrict the amount and type of food ingested. In addition I am using a highly successful method to support people to stop smoking. Several other areas I work with are Phobias, Memory, relaxation, self-esteem, grief and many more.

Your eldering can and should be vibrant and happy. For a long time, we believed development stopped when an individual entered adulthood. This is far from true. Not all the transitions of middle and later life are easy or welcome. No one has to feel depressed, alone, bored, isolated and forgotten. I support individuals, couples, families and caregivers as they navigate the important transitions of later life. Later life is a time of dynamic personal change and growth.

Hey there! I’m Katie. As a therapist I assist people through all of of life's ups and downs. armed with compassion, humor, and a nonjudgmental attitude I help people tackle obstacles and reach goals. First off, let's acknowledge the elephant in the room – therapy can be intimidating. It's not every day you spill your innermost thoughts to a stranger. But that’s where my job comes in, I will work to build a relationship with you at your own pace and get you to a place where you feel able to be open with me. You can expect some genuine conversations, maybe a few laughs, and yes, possibly even some tears.

Chronic Pain Therapists

How does chronic pain therapy work?

Engaging with a psychotherapist to help treat chronic pain does not mean that one’s pain is all in their head. Therapy for chronic-pain patients has been shown to benefit both the mind and the body, targeting physical symptoms and increasing daily functioning. In other words, for many, addressing their emotional health through therapy affects their physical health. A therapist can help a client challenge unhelpful thoughts about pain and develop new ways to respond to it, such as distraction or calming breathing techniques. Studies have found that therapy can be as effective as surgery for certain cases of chronic pain and many doctors recommend trying psychotherapy in advance of considering invasive surgery.

What are the most effective treatment options for chronic pain?

Stress, anxiety, depression, catastrophizing, ruminating, lack of activity, and social withdrawal all make chronic pain worse. Addressing these issues, research shows, can help people gain control over their pain symptoms. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy, biofeedback, and mindfulness-based stress reduction, along with greater pain-management education, have been found to help people reduce fear and disability.

Are there new treatments for chronic pain?

Many cases of chronic pain, particularly those involving back pain, remain medically unexplained. But there is evidence that changes in the brain or nervous system are caused by previous physical ailments such as tissue damage; in such cases, the brain may continue to send out pain signals despite the physical cause having healed. To aid patients under these circumstances, a recently developed treatment known as pain reprocessing therapy (PRT) is designed to help the brain “unlearn” this response. A PRT practitioner helps individuals to reduce the “threat value” of their ongoing pain signals until they can reappraise them as less threatening and fear-inducing. They also help an individual to develop new emotional regulation skills.

How long does therapy for chronic pain take?

There is no set timeline for recovery from chronic pain, especially as there may be a range of physical and psychological causes for any individual’s discomfort, but most patients should expect to see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 sessions. Studies of pain reprocessing therapy found that many individuals’ experience of pain lessened in eight sessions over four weeks.
