Have you tried traditional talk therapy and still need something more? I work with people who want a different approach, partnering with nature, play, energy, and animal-assisted therapy to help support the healing journey. Clients come seeking support for various reasons but I specialize in trauma and attachment, parenting for children who are struggling, empowerment and self-esteem. Healing happens emotionally, spiritually, cognitively and physically through expressive arts, yoga, and partnering with nature and animals. I have a laid-back style and you will often find me dressed in sweats or yoga pants.

Therapy should captivate and transform you. When you are struggling to move past conflicts or getting stuck in all-too-familiar patterns, there should be something so direct, personal, and real about what you discover and practice in therapy that it should dramatically change how you think, feel, and act with others. That's my specialty. Yet, even though therapy is serious work, there should be room for play: for trying things on, for practice, for being human. As a family therapist I care about the quality of your relationships. My approach? Connecting. Pragmatic. Thorough. Creative.

My approach is practical, open and straightforward while maintaining warmth and respect. I believe every person has the capacity to grow and change, given the internal resources and the courage to make the attempt. Together we can enhance self reflection, stimulate self renewal, and guide introspection. I use a family systems approach, with psychoanalytic and humanistic techniques. I also apply art and play therapy techniques with children and adults. Often I will give homework assignments and offer reading resources. I am trained in the use of EMDR and use EMDR techniques and processes.

I am trained in and typically use Play Therapy to help children learn to express and cope with their feelings to address the emotional and behavioral concerns.
I have been working in the mental health field for over 20 years and have experience ranging from early childhood to chronic adult, in a variety of settings including community mental health outpatient clinics, residential treatment homes and day treatment. I enjoy working mostly with children and their families to help them cope with a variety of issues such as behavioral and school related issues, peer relationships, family relationships, grief and loss as well as victims of abuse, neglect, domestic violence or other traumatic events. Although I see children of all ages, I specialize in early childhood.

Trained in art, play and sand tray therapies, I use these modalities, as well as traditional talk therapy, to meet both clients and families where they are, creating an accepting and judgment free environment to explore, heal, and grow.
For as long back as I can remember, I have believed in the power and importance of relationships. Relationships are at the heart of who we are, how we grow, and who we become. In our early years, our closest relationships teach us how to be with others and influence how we see the world. Although we may learn one way to be in relationship when we are a child, our attachment style can also be changed through our current relationships no matter what our age, which can then allow us to choose with intention how we parent, support, and relate to our children.

With school age children I use play therapy.
Everyone has a story to tell. Sometimes we need someone to listen to our story and bear witness to it. Other times we need someone to help us understand the events in our story, or assist us as we write the next chapter in our story. No matter our age, we each have the ability to learn from our stories and create a path towards our desired future.

I support families and children to create a more peaceful and regulated home through play therapy and parent coaching. I use Synergetic Play Therapy to help children better understand their feelings, challenges, and themselves in a developmentally appropriate way. Play therapy allows children to explore and process their emotions, create a stronger mind-body connection, and learn and practice new ways to address life's challenges and self-regulate. I use a collaborative approach with caregivers and believe it takes a team effort to best support children's individual needs.

If you only take the time to read the first paragraph of my bio, here’s what I want to tell you: There’s nothing inherently “wrong” about who you are, it’s ok that you needed to do what you’ve done to survive and there is positive intention behind any behavior. If you don’t believe those things right now but you want to, that’s where I can help. My purpose as a counselor is to create a space where you feel comfortable to be real, become active in your healing and confident in determining what lasting change looks like for you.

I am a strong believer that there is not a single person that is unlovable once you have heard their story. Our stories and our experiences are the building blocks of how we understand and interpret the world we live in. Along the way, we as humans all learn skills that have helped us to survive and it is my job to help my clients to understand and determine which set of skills are going to be the most helpful to utilize moving forward.

Play Therapy

Who is play therapy for?

Play therapy is generally targeted to children between the ages of 3 and 11 who have social, emotional, or behavioral difficulties. Play therapy has also been found helpful for children who have experienced physical or emotional abuse or witnessed atrocities. Play therapy is also often recommended for children who are undergoing major medical procedures or who are suffering from chronic illness; many children’s hospitals are equipped to offer play therapy on-site. Play therapy is also sometimes used for adults; creative writing, music, and art are expressive forms that can all be adapted for therapeutic purposes.

Why do people need play therapy?

Children often do not have the language skills or words to know or to express what is troubling them. Yet they often spontaneously draw or use playthings to depict scenarios that reflect problems in their everyday life. Play therapy provides children with an array of objects and play situations to act out their feelings or experiences so that therapists can get a clear picture of what children might be struggling with and help them find solutions. In addition, play therapists are skilled at helping children understand their inner experience and find words for them, necessary steps toward helping children learn to control their own behavior and come up with solutions to problems they encounter.

What happens in play therapy?

A child enters a comfortable playroom where they are free to choose the objects they want to play with. The play therapist will typically observe how they play with the toys—whether a sandbox, puppets, dolls and action figures, trucks, costumes, drawing and painting materials, or more—because such play provides clues to a child’s family and social relationships, difficulties they are encountering in the world, and what going on inside themselves. Sometimes the therapist may ask the child to use the play objects to tell a story about their family. Using the same instruments of play, therapists can help children discover more advantageous ways of thinking and behaving.

What kinds of problems do play therapists treat?

Play therapy can help children who display destructive or self-destructive impulses; children who seem angry, sad, or fearful; children who experience frequent social, emotional, family, or school difficulty. Play therapy is often of value to children who have experienced a loss or distressing family experience, who are regularly exposed to family conflict, or who have been physically or emotionally abused. Play therapy can help children who are perpetrators of bullying as well as those who are targets of bullying. It helps children learn to identify their feelings, to express them in constructive ways, and to regulate them so they can get on with the business of development.

How long does play therapy last?

Play therapy sessions may last for 30 to 45 minutes, and they usually occur weekly for about 20 sessions. Each session is tailored to the individual child and the kinds of problems they are struggling with. Play that is highly repetitive often indicates a problem requiring further exploration. Therapists typically measure progress through session-to-session changes in play behavior.
