The world has become a stressful place and while it has always been stressful, we have less community and connection. These times have really put a strain on us as individuals, our relationships, our families, our jobs/school and created overwork, stress, and trauma. Honestly, doing healthy relationship and navigating stress and trauma are not skills we have been equipped with. Therapy has become the space to learn those skills, navigate stress, do self care, live presently in life, and process the trauma that's historical and present in our day to day.

Sometimes you know exactly what the problem might be, and other times it feels more confusing and elusive. Psychotherapy is a wonderful way to facilitate and enact positive change into your life. My predominant goal is to make you feel safe and supported, so that you can explore and connect your thoughts, feelings, and experiences in a productive manner. I believe that past experiences and relationships have a profound impact on our present emotional health and work to explore those experiences using a variety of effective treatment approaches tailored to the individual or couple.

When the chaos of your thoughts creates overwhelming anxiety and doubt in your mind, you often find yourself needing to talk with someone. Connections can feel distant and you just need an independent person to sort out your thoughts and help you refocus your life and develop a clearer picture of where to go next in life. Relationships and life stressors create a burden and the added stress of your past continue to make everyday life heavier but you're not sure what you're next step should be.

Over the last 13 plus years I have specialized in treating clients struggling with substance use and trauma. I have spent the majority of my career working in treatment facilities that address substance use whether they were residential, extended care or outpatient and I enjoy working with those who report concerns related to their use of a substance(s) and report other "underlying concerns" such as a history of trauma, grief, anxiety, depression, etc. I've been trained in EMDR and spent several years working with young adults, women, and even professionals. Codependency and family work is also an area of expertise of mine.

My goal with my clients is to create a warm and welcoming environment where you can feel safe to explore stories left untold. I am passionate about meeting people where they are, giving them practical tools to help in the short-term, while simultaneously addressing the underlying core of the problem. I adjust my approach to therapy based of my clients needs, though primarily working through a person-centered, trauma-informed lens. By utilizing mindfulness, cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectic behavioral therapy, and body neutrality I intend to help connect body, past and emotions to help find a strong sense of self.

Do you feel unfulfilled or unseen in your relationships? Are you stuck in the same unhealthy cycles of self-sabotage? Do you want to improve relationships but aren’t sure how? My name is Vanessa, and I embrace a direct and empathically grounded approach to therapy. I strive to provide a safe space in which you can explore what you are already doing to live a fulfilled life as well as ways in which to strengthen those skills. I am experienced in working with clients with all sorts of diagnoses but focus on healing instead of pathologizing. My clients often hold marginalized identities. They may be neurodiverse. They are all amazing.

I find that respect, genuineness, support and empathy are at the heart of my Psychotherapy practice.I feel that successful therapy is a collaboration between you and I, and is motivated by your needs. Regardless of your goals I can support you in your process. Some people desire to solve an immediate problem, others desire long term depth work. I can be your guide in either type of work. At times we can feel overwhelmed and not know where to turn, a kind, non judgmental, insightful, skilled therapist can help. When we experience challenges we can all benefit from support.

After working with children and families for 15 years in foster care and adoption settings, I developed a passion for empowering people who have experienced trauma, grief and loss, and who struggle with relationship issues. Life always presents challenges and the ability to move through those challenges with a strong sense of self is important. I work closely with clients to develop a strong therapeutic relationship, which engenders an environment of safety and promotes healing. I am an EMDR Certified Clinician which integrates attachment theory, CBT and emotion regulation. I also use child-centered play therapy with children.
