My clinical approach utilizes the modalities of Emotionally Focused Therapy, Internal Family Systems, and The Gottman Method of Couples Therapy, of which I am Level I certified.
I specialize in working with individuals and couples to explore dating, relationship patterns, attachment, and trauma. I'm especially passionate in supporting the queer community. Together, we work to identify and examine recurring patterns with care and curiosity. In individual work, this can look like exploring your early experiences that informed your attachment style and connecting these patterns to the way you show up or abandon yourself today. In relationship therapy, we bring awareness to the dynamic between partners these individual experiences create to deepen connection, enhance vulnerability, and improve communication.

I incorporate an integrated therapeutic approach utilizing methods informed by neuropsychology and somatic interventions, EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing), Gottman method, & Mindfulness.
As you read this, try releasing your shoulders from your ears, unclenching your jaw, and removing your tongue from the roof of your mouth. We tend to hold onto stress in the least noticeable ways and subtle changes can help bring awareness to our stress patterns. Whether you find yourself struggling with anxiety, sexual/gender identity, relationships, life transitions, or the general stress of everyday life, you are in the right place. My hope is that through collaboration and a safe space to explore whatever it is you may be facing, I can be of support to you along your way.

I also enjoy using attachment and somatic interventions, and I am trained in EMDR and couples-specific modalities including Gottman Method and EFT.
I believe that curiosity heals, that healing comes from approaching our lives with greater openness & non-judgement. I work with individuals and couples/intimate relationships impacted by trauma, relationship issues, chronic illness, grief, & identity exploration. Using a caring and direct approach, I support clients to gain deeper understanding, increase emotional regulation, & use more effective conflict management strategies. I believe that our world often makes it seem like we need to be fixed when really we need trust, connection, and tools to cultivate desired change within ourselves and our relationships.

I use the Gottman Method in my work with couples, and also to inform my work with individuals.
Healing and growth takes place in the context of relationships - in our relationship with ourselves, and in our relationships with others. Unfortunately, sometimes our relationships become distant, disconnected and a place of conflict, leaving us with unmet needs and just feeling “stuck.” We don’t feel safe asking for what we need, and maybe don’t even know what we need ourselves. The therapeutic relationship in counseling provides an authentic and safe place in which healing can begin to take place.

Gottman Method Therapists

How does the Gottman method work?

One of the core doctrines of the Gottman method is that negative emotions hurt relationships about five times more than positive emotions help them. Thus, couples require five times more positive interactions than negative interactions with each other. The therapist will guide clients on how to improve communication and understanding of each other to manage conflict and have their emotional needs met. The therapist will also advise couples on how to repair relations with each other when conflict arises, and therefore avoid lasting damage.

Is the Gottman method evidence-based?

Yes, this method is an evidence-based approach to couples therapy. The method is based on more than 40 years of research by Drs. John and Julie Gottman, the psychologists who developed the method. The Gottmans analyzed decades of data to draw conclusions about what types of interactions are likely to lead to specific results, and which interventions are most likely to lead to success. Studies have found that this approach leads to improvements in relationship satisfaction, intimacy, communication skills, and a lower rate of divorce.

How long does the Gottman method take?

The duration of treatment depends on the specific challenges clients face. Sessions are typically 60 to 90 minutes long, and an average course of treatment is around 10 sessions. In some cases, such as for couples dealing with a critical problem, the therapist will suggest an intensive course of treatment, with daily sessions over the first two to four days. Treatment is complete when the couple is satisfied and has met the goals they’ve set, and when the therapist believes they have the skills to continue on their own.

Is the Gottman method effective?

Through the Gottman method, couples can achieve changes that are real and sustainable. This treatment has been used for more than 40 years; the method is supported by empirical research, including randomized controlled trials that have demonstrated effectiveness in improving relationship outcomes for couples. Like any talk therapy, success or failure depends in large part on how committed the clients are to making positive changes and working toward results.
