Hi, my name is Rivers. I’m a psychotherapist who’s primarily influenced by the contemplative, existential, and psychoanalytic movements in psychology. My goal is to cultivate a space where you can feel free to show up exactly as you are in the moment, without censoring yourself for fear of judgement or ridicule. I believe wholeheartedly in what is known in psychoanalysis as “the talking cure.”

Drawing from existential, transpersonal, and Gestalt theory, we will use somatic (body-based), mindfulness, and contemplative tools to regulate your nervous system to align with your unique life's purpose.
It’s no mistake that you’ve landed here. You deserve to live a life with more ease, flow, and presence. You may find yourself stuck, yearning for a connection to purpose and meaning. Maybe you’re going through major life transitions, experiencing grief, loss, and despair. Maybe you’re feeling overwhelmed, stuck in patterns that no longer serve you. Growth and transformation are not an intellectual-only experience. The way we hold tension, maintain posture, and move are intimately connected to our thoughts and emotional well-being. The key to wholeness lives within your inner landscape.

Let's explore your existential questions together.
Are you looking to confront deep questions about yourself? Your existence? Do you often ask what you are supposed to be doing in this rapidly changing world? When we don't have the answers sometimes this shows up as anxiety, depression, disconnection from loved ones, procrastination, perfectionism, or grief. We know we want to know ourselves, to lead a connected and meaningful life aligned with our values and aspirations. But sometimes we need help in crafting it. Sometimes we need help pulling out/re-discovering our internal desires that are hidden behind our defense mechanisms and coping skills.

I have worked in multiple clinical settings with various populations. I appreciate working with clients who are navigating existential crises, those who are looking for a better understanding to the meaning of life. This experience can help clients identify and break negative or unhealthy patterns in their lives. I am a firm believer in the power of perception-shifting, in order to identify a silver lining in even the most difficult situations. My therapeutic approach is dynamic and eclectic. My goal with all of my clients is to walk beside them through their struggles and help them come through their struggles feeling stronger.

I am inspired by the resilience of the human condition- the ability to cope, grow, overcome and flourish. And, wow- is it hard work! Resilience is earned in the deepest, darkest challenges of our lives. These moments can provide the opportunity to intentionally respond, connect and communicate. My therapeutic approach is grounded in an existential perspective- to support the ability to connect to meaning and purpose as you strive to build a rich full and meaningful life. It is my honor to partner with you as you travel the road towards being your most authentic, connected and grounded self.

My background and training is in psychoanalysis, although I also work with existential and family systems perspectives in mind.
Seeking care can be a daunting experience, from trusting your instincts around whether it feels like the right match, to believing in your own capacity to grow and heal. I see my role as providing a reliable and consistent space where my patients can grow freer to think about their lives in ways that may have previously felt out of reach. A foundational goal of psychoanalysis and psychotherapy is the cultivation of curiosity into how your mind works, how you relate to your own emotions, and how patterns in your life are obstructing your ability to work, love, play, and make meaning.

I have integrated 20 years of Buddhist Dharma, more than a decade of clinical practice in various settings, and insights from existential psychology.
My clients deal with so much speed and stress. They are navigating a life that feels increasingly unfulfilled. They feel stuck. They often seek solace in external solutions like too much work, toxic relationships, or substances, and find all these lacking. They face the challenge of pausing to understand and meet their internal needs, which feels paradoxical. How do you slow down when there's all this to do? This leads to more stress, anxiety, and a pervasive sense of dissatisfaction with life. There is a way through all this.

I utilize narrative, IFS (parts work), feminist, person-centered, and existential theories and work from an anti-racist, anti-colonial, sex positive, poly, queer and trans affirming perspective.
Whether seeking individual, relational, or family therapy, I believe we are all multi-storied beings who contain many parts-none of which are bad. Along the way, we collect stories-stories that others tell about us, stories we tell about ourselves, the story we tell about the problem, and stories we inherit from dominant knowledge or culture. These narratives shape our perception of ourselves and others and can influence relational connection and the way we relate to our own self, which often contributes to why one might seek out therapy.

My orientation is primarily insight oriented (psychodynamic) and I integrate attachment theory, existential-humanistic, cognitive-behavioral, multicultural, and feminist modalities.
The people I work with often come to me because they are looking to gain insight into emotional patterns, address difficult dynamics, and develop more balanced relationships with themselves or others. Together we paint a picture of their life stories, work to integrate the various aspects of themselves, and move towards the life they want to be living. We take the time to explore the context and history of the problem or symptom they are experiencing in order to better address it. I work with people of all ages and backgrounds and promote authentic expression and reflection in the therapy room.
